the tool and die work for Byford

remarkable career longevity, Byford

Deadline Nears For
Wheat Insurance
MERIDIAN — The final applica-
tion date for Federal Crop Insurance
on 1984-crop wheat in Bosque
County is Aug. 31, according to
Ardell M. Kalmbach, district direc-
tor of the Federal Crop Insurance
Corporation. Kalmbach adds, how-
ever, that wheat growers interested
in participating in the special Indivi-
dual Yield Coverage Program should
apply for the necessary yield certifi-
cation at least 15 days prior to that
date.
Farmers who can qualify for the
IYC plan are offered higher yield
guarantees at no additional cost. To
be eligible, Kalmbach explains,
producers must have records to show
that average wheat yields during the
three most recent crop years have
been above the average for the area.
Yield records should be submitted
to the ASCS Office in Bosque County
for certification. Kalmbach suggests
that interested producers may want
to contact the ASCS Office in
advance to determine the kinds of
acreage and production records that
are needed.
Once a certification of above-
average yields has been obtained, it
should be given to the insurance
agent who is writing the policy. The
additional coverage will be added
automatically. For each bushel that
an IYC participant’s yields are above
the local average, Kalmbach ex-
plains, up to $3 per acre of additional
protection can be obtained with no
increase in the premium.
Federal Crop Insurance policies,
which provide coverage against most
unavoidable causes of crop loss, are
sold by independent insurance ag-
ents and private insurance compan-
ies^ list of these authorized to sell
instance in Bosque County is
available from the ASCS office.

Cantaneda’s anniversary with the
company. C.B. (Barney) Strahan,
president of Byford, will present
Castaneda with a gold Seiko watch.
Castaneda, who lives in Waco and
commutes daily to work, said the
party “came as a complete surprise
to me.
"I’m going to enjoy it and
appreciate it. I don’t believe any-
Pne’sever done anything like this for
me."
Mace (full name, “Macedonia")
and his wife Valentine have five
children, including two married sons
find one married daughter. The
children and their spouses are
expected to be present for the
testimonial dinner.
Mace said that Byford has grown,
and changed, a great deal in the 25
years he has been working for the
company When he first came to
work on Aug. 22, 1958, Ray Byford
was still owner-operator, Mace was
one of only three employees, and
there was only one tool mill. Now,
there are four tool mills, and 15
employees working at what has
become a computerized operation
that does one third of its business
out-of-state
Company Manager Anna Lindley
noted during a recent tour of Byford
that many of the tools and parts
manufactured by the company are
used by the food industry, including
the M&M-Mars Corp., makers of
candy. Most of the out-of-state
business is concentrated in Idaho
and Oregon, she added. She also
noted that the company does some
business outside of the country,
chiefly in South America.
In 1976, Ray Byford sold the
company to Strahan. Plans to move
the operation from its present site to
another spot on Hwy. 6, adjacent to
Gearench were delayed last year due
to economic factors, but according to
Lindley, the move is now back on
track, with June 1, 1984 the target
date for construction of a new facility
to begin.
Mace says he owes a lot to both
Byford and Strahan for his know-
ledge of his trade.
"Most everything I do is pretty
precision work,” he says. "I got all
the experience I got by working here
with Mr. Byford and Barney (Stra-
han), and you couldn’t find two
better men to learn from.
"I’ve enjoyed it here," he said
with a grin, before returning to his
machine to begin his second quarter-
century of turning out products for
thecompany that, in many ways, has
been his second home for 25 years.
