LIVINGSTON 4. The October
meeting of the Polk County Garden
Club was held at the lake home of
Lil Roman in Indian Hills No. 2.
Twenty-four members, one guest,
Mary Briggs and the guest speaker
Kate Hillhouse were present
The program "Local History As
Shown by Native Plants," was a
slide presentation by Hillhouse,
President of The Native Plant Soc-
siety of Texas. All of the slides
were taken on Hillhouse’s 10 acres
of land in Providence where she
and her husband have built their
retirment home.
"Rcdchance" is the name they
have given their place. After
searching through records, they dis-
covered ProvidctlCB was once
called Chance and her husband
calls her "Red” and that is how the
name came to be.
One slide, a cross section of a
pine that had to be removed to
build the house, revealed a lot of
history. As pointed out by Hil-
lhouse, the first 10 or 15 rings were
very close together and showed the
tree growing in crowded condi-
tions. Then the area was probably
logged and revealed damage to the
tree but growning conditions im-
proved and the rings grew very
large for many years until crowding
became apparent again. She es-
timates the area was last logged in
1947-48 and before that during the
turn of the centery. Another slide
. showed a bent over ironwood tree
with very large growth emerging
that indicated the tree had been in
this position for many years. This is
something the indians use to do
with young saplings to make a
bridge to walk over small streams
or ditches.
Club members have been invited
to tour Hillhouse's property in
Providence on October 25th.
Inez Watson gave a report from
the Lone Star Gardener on "Un-
usual Vines That thrive in Texas
Gardens." Among the vines dis-
cussed were musesadine vines,
dutch jnaa’s pipe, roral honasuckle
and trumpet vines.
Therapy Chairman Jean
Dudcrstadt asked members to assist
in hanging window-type bird
feeders at Livingston Convalescent
Center on Thrusday, October 14th
at 1:30. Yard of the Month Chair-
man Lil Roman announced the Lou
Myer residence on Hwy. 3126 in
Indian Hills No. 2 received the
honor for October.
Margaret David was elected
delegate to Texas Garden Club’s
Fall Convention to be held October
26-27 in El Paso.
The garden club is having a
garage sale Saturday, October 16 at
the home of Betty Starr, 104 Whip-
poorwill. AH proceeds will be
going to the Scholarship Fund. Two
$500 scholarships will be given to

Polk County at graduation time
next spring.
