Men Who Turn 26 This Year Will Reach
Important Selective Service Milestone
WASHINGTON. DC - The
Selective Service System has
announced that men who will
reach their 26th birthday in
198? are reaching an important
milestone
Beginning on Jan l, 1987,
men who were required to
register with Selective Service
in 1981 will be turning 26
Selective service does not have
the authority to accept registra
lions after age 26 By failing to
register before turning 26, a
young man will have perma
nently forfeited his right tocer
tain benefits including federal
student aid, job training and
federal employment In addition
to these federal benefits, some
states require registration for
state student aid, entrance to a
state supported college or
university, state employment
and permission to practice law
Many of the 25 year-olds w ho
have still not registered may be
unaware of the requirement or
do not understand the impor
tunce of the obligation to
register Some may even have
served in the military but failed
to register either before enter-
ing the armed forces or after
leaving active duty. Others may-
have been institutionalized or
incarcerated at the time of their
18th birthday and not realized
that they were required to
register if released prior to age
26
For those men born in 1961
who have registered, 1987 also
marks the year that ends their
eligibility for selection for indue
tion under present law should
there be a return to the draft
Over 17 million men. age 18
through 25 have registered with
selective service since registra
tion was reinstituted in 1980
These men comprise over 97
percent of those required to
register
Men age 18 to 25 who have
not yet registered still have a
chance to avoid risk of prosecu-
tion and loss of benefits bv
registering promptly at any lo-
cal post office Failure to
register is a felony punishable
by a fine of up to $250,000, up
to five years in jail, or both
