The eighth grade Cubs began
the second half of the district
race against Lorena In the first
half the Cubs finished with a 4-1
record, with their only loss com-

trolled the entire game
At halftime Clifton held a
commanding 26 9 lead In the
second half, every Cub player
saw playing time, as Clifton out-
scored Lorena 22 Son their way
to a 48-17 victory
After losing to Hamilton, I
was real happy to see us bounce
back and beat Lorena like we
did We need to work better as
a team, instead of depending on
one or two guys, if w e are going
to make a serious attempt to
overtake Hamilton

round of district basketball the
Jr Cubettes dunked Lorena by

a slow start In the first period
shooting was slow and poor with
only 10-4 on the board They
didn't come alive until after
halftime. The score at mid
game was 17-8. The third peri

shot out of a cannon as they
pumped in 14 points to lead by
3110. The final period was easy
with all the Cubettes playing
and doing a fine job.
The girls shot fair with 59
shots to make 12 for 20 percent.
Free throws were good as they
got 10 of 27 for 37 percent. The

7th Grade Cubettes
Lose By One Point
By JAKE WIMBERLY

CLIFTON — Someone needs
to send the seventh grade
Cubettes just one more point.
They have lost their last two
basketball games by only one
point. These are their only loss-
es for the year The girls were
dropped by Lorena by a close
22-23. The game was too close as
the first period ended with a 2-2
deadlock. The second period was
the best for the girls as the half
ended with a 11-6. The next
chapter was bad for the
Cubettes as Lorena quickly
gained the lead and ended the
period with a 15-16 lead. The
lead changed many times in the
final stanza with Lorena having
the edge when the buzzer
sounded.
The girls played well against
a good team. Shooting was weak
against a tall defense. The girls
only made six of 46 with 14 per-

December’s visitations were
allocated as follows; 1.095 boat-
ing; 52,135 fishing; 1.785 hunt-
ing; 5,617 picnicking; 12,452
sightseeing; 0 skiing; 0 swim-
ming; 13,166 camping: and
1,746 other.
In order for a team to join the
league, Nowell said a $200 fee
is required, $15 of which goes to
the USSSA and $185 to be used
for league operational costs.
A team is allowed a 20-man
roster, and may play 10 defen-
sive men and 11 offensive men,
including a designated hitter.
Each team must have a desig-
nated coach who will be the only
team member allowed to protest
during a game.
Due to the immense number
of games played on existing
fields in Clifton, Nowell said
most, if not all, of the league’s
games this year will be played
at Cranfills Gap. He said the
league's goal is to have its own
field in Clifton by next year.
Preliminary scheduling shows
that games will probably be
played on Mondays, Tuesdays,
and Thursdays, with four games
each night beginning at 6:30.
Nowell said this would allow
each team to play two games per
week.
The league's next meeting is
scheduled for Wednesday, Feb.
11, at 7 p.m. in the Western Fed-
eral community room. Anyone
requiring additional informa-
tion may contact Paul Nowell at
675-6682.
