LIVINGSTON - Polk County
has been chosen to receive $13,867
in federal funding to supplement
emergency food and shelter pro-
grams within the county.
The selection was made by a na-
tional board that is chaired by the
Federal Emergency Management
Agency (FEMA) and consists of
representatives from the Salvation
Army, American Red Cross,
Council of Jewish Federations,
Catholic Charities USA, National
Council of Churches of Christ in
the USA and the United Way of
America. The national board was
charged with distributing funds ap-
propriated by Congress to help ex-
pand the capacity of food and shelter
programs in areas throughout the
country.
A local board, chaired by County
Judge John Thompson and consist-
ing of representatives from af filiates
of the voluntary organizations com-
posing the national board, will de-
termine how the funds will be dis-
tributed among qualified local ser-
vice organizations which provide
emergency food and shelter services
and submit a request for funding.
Under the terms of the grant from
the national board, local govern-
mental or private organizations
chosen to receive funds must: 1) be
non-profit, 2) have an accounting
system, 3) practice nondiscrimina-
tion, 4) have demonstrated the ca-
pability to deliver emergency food
and/or shelter programs, and 5) is
they are a private voluntary orgam
zation, they must have a voluntary
board. Any qualified organization is
urged to apply for this funding by
submitting a request in writing or
by representation to the local board
meeting at 10 a.m. Monday, Dec.
15, in the Commissioners'
Courtroom, third floor of the Polk
County Courthouse in Livingston.
