Of interest to readers:
“Only a few years ago no
summer camps accepted
children with cancer. In
1976 the first camp for these
children was started in Lake
Wales, Florida. It was so
successful that it has since
inspired numerous counter-
parts: Camp “Good Days"
in New York, Camp “One-
Step-At-A-Time” in Wis-
consin, and others in Michi-
gan, Colorado, Texas, and
Ohio. These enable kids
with cancer to participate
not only in archery, but in
horseback riding, canoeing,
swimming, hiking, and ten-
nis. Many are affiliated with
local ACS Units.
“According to Edward
Baum, M.D., director of the
Wisconsin camp, ‘Kids with
cancer are normal, only they
have special problems. It’s

J.C. Pitts
Baptized
During services at Our
Savior’s Lutheran Church,
Norse, on Sunday, June 20,
James Carl Pitts, son of Mr.
and Mrs. Paul Pitts of
Valley Mills, received the
rite of Holy Baptism, per-
formed by the Rev. John M.
Homerstad.
Sponsors for Pitts were
David Smith and Mr. and
Mrs. Sonny Pitts, all of
Clifton.
After the services, a din-
ner in his honor wasgiven in
the home of his grandpar-
ents and uncle, Mr. and
Mrs. Carl Smith and David.
Guests present for the din-
ner were his parents and
sister, Nancy and Kellie
Wilson of Valley Mills, Mr.
and Mrs. Sonny Pitts, Lauri
and Barry, Rev. and Mrs.
John M. Homerstad, all of
Clifton. Later in the after-
noon, Charley Aars of Clif-
ton visited.
to the group from Mr. and
Mrs. Charles (Kathaleen
Solberg) Sommers and Mrs.
Jack (Mildred Solberg) Rav-
er. After picture-taking and
visiting, everyone departed
for home, looking forward to
the next meeting.
important for them to have
the same summer camp
opportunities as other child-
ren.’
“This may startle many
people. Until 10 or 15 years
ago, the outlook for these
children was bleak; most
efforts were concentrated
on prolonging survival and
seeking cures. But now
most such children can be
put into remission and re-
turn to normal life. Many
will never have a recurrence
of their disease.
“However, most regular
camps will not accept a child
who has cancer; they’re
apprehensive about meet-
ing the child’s medical
needs, as well as handling
interactions with other
campers.
“A normal experience;
part of what’s special about
camps for children with
cancer is that they try to
offer a normal camp experi-
ence. Because they are held
on the grounds of establish-
ed camps (which, in many
cases, donate their facilit-
ies), many activities are
planned around existing eq-
uipment and resources. But
a few programs are offered
to the older, age 12 and up,
like day trips to nearby
attractions, boat rides, as
well as five-day trips, moun-
tain climbing and touring.
But there’s no stigma to
dropping out of an activity
because one feels nauseous.
Everyone understands, be-
cause chemotherapy is an
experience shared by most
campers."
