ImiiTios Election Tickets The Hous-
ton ZMfgrepl complains that the Fillmore
party hid issued election tickets printed simi-
lar to the Democratic titets and under the
beading "Democratic Electoral Ticket" had
placed the names of the American Elector
DWe learn that Mr Kyle formerly

serves encouragement
Tn TriCETO Libert-. We learnwith
pleasure that the steamer Betty Powell is
already doing a paying business in the trade
between this port and. Liberty The estab-
lishment of a new line of traffic and travel
sncVas this cannot be expected to burst at
once into full maturity. It requires time and
it requires the people within reach of the ac-
commodations afforded to be generally in-
formed of the existence and advantages of
such a line. We expect to see a portion of
be trade of Walter Trinity Polk and Tyler
counties take the direction of Liberty and we
are not certain but that trade by that route
will extend to and even beyond Oockett and
Nacogdoches. The roads are or can eaily be
made as gool-on this route as on any other
either cast or west.
As to the permanency cf the navigation we
are assured by passengers that it is quite re-
liable The Betty PowtlL on her last trip
although ft evere Norther was blowing
which so lowered the water In the bay that
the Houston boats could not cros Clopper's
hoal crowed the Trinity bar drawing two
and half a feet water This Is proof that for
such a boat the navigation is permanent
C5 Great enthusiasm vas manifested in
Houston by the Democrats on the occaion
of the election They had a flag one hunared
feet long stretched across Maine street which
five patriotic ladies had at np all night to
manufacture
---
B-e learn that the detention of the
Houston mail boat in this place on last Satur-
day was owing to her boilers having to re-
ceive repairs ; and we further learn that even
after she left here she was detained by low
water at Bed Fish bar so that she would not
have reached Houtton any sooner bad she
left at her usual time
fcTOEM. Last evening we had quife a se-
vere thunder storm accompanied by an ex-
ceedingly heavy Tain The electric fluid
struck a lionsc on Crockett street in the eas-
tern portion of the city and damaged it se-
riously The inmates consisting of four per-
sons were shocked by the electricity but not
seriously hurt.
Soon after the rain subsided a severe
norther sprang up and fires itnd overcoats
were in demand. This is an Illustration of the
striking changes which suddenly occur in this
climate. Yesterday the thermometer stood at
about 70 and it fell until to-day it standsat
44 These changes of temperature are
sensibly felt; however In a few days we
shall again have milder weather
Houston akd Red Hives Eaileoad We
are favored wiLh a statement from Mr Ere-
mond president or the above railroad to the
effect that he expects bis road to be completed
so as to connect with the Memphis and El
Paso road within three years from January
next There are now two hundred and fifty
hinds at work on the second section and the
nnmber he says will be increased to four .
hundred very soon Ten miles more of iron
will be laid during the month of January;
and Mr B thinks the entire second section of
twecty-five miles will be completed in April
next. The receipts of the road now tmount
to about two hundred dollars daily and ten
miles more of the road will double the re-
ceipts. It will therefore be seen that if these
anticipations are realized Galveston will be
in communication with Chicago much sooner
than onr old fogies dream of. Wonder If
Galveston will contribute anything towards
this enterprise? We bear it intimated that
Galveston haa some Interest in these railroad
enterprises

Bostos Schools Boston owns seventy-
eight school houses the new grammar school
houses having cost $42000 each. The total
n timber of children educated is ii present
23749 and the total annual cost including
repairs of buildings it is $41000 the cost
of each pupil for the last five years has been
$11 41 each and for the previous five years
it was $15 45 each. That is a little over one
dollar per month embracing instruction in
all the higher branches byuhe very best
teachers with the aid of the cost complete
philosophical apparatus and every means for
facilitating the acquisition of knowledge
Why cannot the cities of the South have
schools equally good and equally cheap ? Is
there anyinsnnnounta hie difficulty In our way?
Mast all oar better class of schools and col
leges continue to be so expensive as to make
it an object of economy for the people of the
South to send their children to the North to
be educated in like manner as we send our
raw material to them to be mancfactnrcd for
our use?
D It has been ascertaiaed that Quebec
as the terminus for the ocean steamships to
stop at has very important advantages over
Boston and Xcw York. For instance the
pasengcrs and mail which wonld require ten
days to be landed from Liverpool to New York
on a direct passage between these ports
wonld be landed In New York just sixteen
hours sooner were the steamers having the
same speed to stop at Quebec and the pas-
sengers and mail to proceed thence by land.
The people of Canada are now bringing this
important matter to the notice of the British
Government1 in hopes to make Quebec the
terminus of the Ocean Steamship Mail Line.
In fact Quebec wonld doubtless long since
have become the terminus had the transpor-
tation of malls been left to be governed by
the principle of free trade. Bat it is now
near twenty years that the'tBritish Govern-
ment has been paying an enormous annual
subsidy of near one million of dollars to
carry the mails to Boston and New York and
own Government having followed Bntish ex-
ample by giving subsidies also to the Collin's
steamers the superior advantages of Quebec
as a terminus were more than counter-balanced
by a rival system of Government
patronage which baa had thctffect to make
the iaage ct the Atlantic sixteen hours
longerthan U would have been under the free
trade principle.

CEr5" The one and a quarter million loan for
the New York canal enlargement was awar-
ded on the 17th of October (ult ) at a prem-
ium of $13 70 Thus we have another in-
stance of the vast advantage a State has over
a private Company. This premium is just
about the same as the usual d.scmmt com-
panieshave to pay That is a hundred dollar
New York bond Is worth $113 70 while a
unareu uoiiar company's bond is worth -n
erally in cash about $S6 30 the former bond
being worth $13 70 more than Its face value
and the latter about that much less than its
face value It follows therefore that a mil-
lion and a quarter of New York bonds bring
$17190 over that amount In cash while the
same amount of a company's bonds vroald
bring that much less Sapposing then both
the State and Company each contract a debt
of a million and a quarter the State rill
have nearly $350000 more than the Company
as the proceeds or tho -ame amonnt of In-
debtedness Net Mail Rocte We observe that the
Pjjst Office Department has advertised for a
weekly mail on route No 7S5Rthat is the
route between Galveston and Liberty We
are glad to learn that our fellow citizen Mr.
A. S. Rathven haa made a bid to carry the
mall on this route by a steamer and wc hope
the Department will give such a bid the pre-
ference over any proposing to carry it by sail
boats or any conveyance dependent on the
winds. Wc have had quite experience enough
with the uncertainties of such mail convey
ances This route is strictly a great trunk 1
route which with proper connections at
Liberty from different counties will be the
means of fiupplying neatly all Eastern Texas
with mail matter more speedily than it can
be supplied by any other means We ob-
serve that nearly all oar merchants and other
citizens strongly recommend the acceptance
of this bid by the Government Mr Root our
Post Master joining In this recommendation
In fact we have long looked upon the es-
tablishment of such a mail route by steamers
as one of the most important improvements
that can be made in our mail system for the
accommodation of a large majority of the
citizens of Eastern Texas.

Editoes News. The District Court has
been In session here some three weeks bnt
wlng to the absence of many of the members
of the bar at Seguin where Court is also in
esion but little business of importance had
been transacted nntil Thursday last the day
Appointed for taking up the Criminal Docket
The Civil Docket U again to be resumed on
the 17th of next month by mutual agreement
of all parties and will doubtless drag its weary
length along far into tho New Year ero the
business is completed. At least such is the
probability when we look at tho immense
amount of business before this Court and the
severe inflictions to which it is too frequently
subjected in the shape of long winded speeches.
Rat Judge Devme albeit a profound and bril-
liant lawyer possesses the most enduring
patience and forbearance qualities certain.
the most essential to his lt trying situation
The Criminal Docket as usual presents a
pretty long exhibit of evil deed" and the
Grand Jnry have retired after a laborious
session of some ten day to meet again before
the close of the term During their investi
gation I understand that no leas than SO
presentments were found for gambling alone
exclusive of probably a dozen for assaults
with intent to kill horse stealing theNs and
I believe but two for murder Tha rod of

Fatisfactory to observe that juries begin to
find the stern necessity cf doing their duty
elc what protection is there in our commu
nity (made up of every - or nationality

first day of the opening of the Criminal
Docket a man by the name of Eobt Auguatin
who was under arrest for an as-anltwith in-
tent to kill a Mexican by the name of Trancis
Peridi some few months ago was found
guilty and sentenced to five years in the Pen-
itentiary The prisoner is one of a gang of
noted desperadoes who have infected this city
for some titas past and justly merited the
punishment meted out to him On the fol-
lowing diy (Friday last.) another man. by
the name or Gibson was found gnilty of a
similar offence and sentenced to two years m
the Penitentiary; and on yesterday a horse
thief of the name of Leroy was seal down to
that respectable institute for the term of three
years There nro rlenty more uf tho same
stnpe about in our city and if I mistake not
quite a nnmber still under arrest for trial in
onr dty; and if jnries continue at this rate
in the dispatch of business Bexar county will
soon become well represented at Huntsville
justice will be vindicated and our community
eventually rid of a corroding evil that tends
not a little to retard its prosperity and blight
its fair reputation
I nnderstand that Wednesday next is the
day appointed for the trial of tho murderers

It however proved to be only a Jlash in tha

to have originated In tho trial by Court Mar-

the Cail' d States Army. The charges pre-

since Howeer apparently well grounded
sentiments were entertained by many persons
well posted in the affair that Travis had been
dealt unfairly with and oar late Legislature
very commendably interested itself in his
behalf by an appeal to the Department at

of Texas was not thus to be sacrificed to the
petty prejudices of an aristocratic clique who
look with disdain upon ail wno navenoi graa-

appeal does not yet appear but Travis con-
