WTell, half of this week with no
game at the end is gone. In
talking with Coach Essary, he
said this has been a good week
and the spirit on the team has
been real good.
It was an oversight on my
part, but I had failed to say
anything about the 7th grade
intersquad game last night.
The white team was divided into
a maroon and white team.

Despite my oversight, there
was still a pretty good crowd.
Even though the varsity

is still some football on the local

Mike Quarry, ranked eighth
among light heavyweights, was
knocked down in the second
round last night by Puerto
Rican Champion Tami San-
tiago. But he got up after a
count of eight, dominated the
rest of the bout, and scored at
ten round split decision in
Orlando, Florida. it was
Quarry’s 52nd victory against
seven defeats.
Two hundred years later the
message in Boston’s Old Church
could be paraphrased to read,
“One if by land, surprise if by
otherwise.”
Two of the Southwest Con-
ference’s old church schools
opened the 1975 football season
Saturday night §nd it was a
repeat of the land grab that has
characterized the conference
over the last four years.
Both Baylor and SMU
displayed efficient rushing
games in posting opening
victories. For the first time in
Baylor’s 74 football seasons,
two Bears rushed for more than
100 yards as Baylor posted a 20-
10 victory over Mississippi. And
SMU’s Wishbone - oriented
ground game churned out 308
yards in a 14-7 victory over
Wake Forest.
The pair posted strong of-
fensive marks in their openers
as 87 per cent of the 774 yards
gained between them were on
the ground. Two games don’t a
season make, of course, but the
heavy emphasis on ground
games continued a trend that
the SWC has seen over the last
four years.
In 1967 the gains were split
’almost equally, SWC teams
averaging 160 yards rushing per
game and 154 yards passing.
That figures out to 51 per cent of
the yardage coming on the
ground. By 1972 it was 63 per
cent rushing and last season
last season it rose to a high of 70
per cent on the ground -- 212
rushing yards per contest for
SWS teams sgainst 91.5 yards
passing.
Big, veterans offensive lines
gave Baylor’s Cleveland
Franklin and Pat McNeil and
SMU’s David Bostick the im-
petus to go over 100 yards in the
openers. Franklin leads with 140
yards, McNeill rushed for 135
and Bostick added 109.
Franklin is following the
strong recent trend among
Baylor tailbacks of hogging
individual statistical
categories, leading in four and
being second in another. Steve
Beaird won the SWC rushing,
tandem offense and scoring
crowns last fall. Franklin, a
junior from Brenham, leads in
rushing, total offense, pass
receiving and tandem offense
and is second in scoring.
He is the only double leader
among individuals following the
light opening week of play,
while Baylor leads in all six
team offense and defense
categories.
COACHES OTIS WILLIAMS AND EARL BARRIER have 117 7th graders out for football. There has been
an increase of 12 since school started. In pic No. 1 Coach Williams is setting up his offense. Since there is
a large number of boys Coach Steve Braddock came over every morning to assist with special groups. In pic
No. 2 as seen here the desire for contact can be witnessed. In pic No. 3 Coach Braddock oversees the defense.
In pic No. 4 Coaches Barrier and Braddock make comment about movement in defense.

NEW YORK - Alabama
dropped from second place to
13th and previously-unranked
Missouri jumped into the fifth
spot in this week’s associated
press college football poll.
Those drastic shifts in the poll
released today were caused by
Missouri’s 20-to-7 upset over the
Crimson Tide Monday.
Oklahoma’s defending
national champions held onto
the top spot, with 51 first-place
votes from the 56 sportscasters
and writers on the panel.
Alabama’s defeat allowed
Michigan, Ohio State and
Southern California to move up
one spot each to second, third
and fourth. None of the top four
has played.
Rounding out the top ten, in
order, are Nebraska, Auburn,
Notre Dame, Texas A&M and
Penn State. Penn State fell to
tenth place from sixth after
barely beating Temple last
weekend.
