Four Records
Fall at Olympics
LAREDO (TP) — Four records
and one tie already were1 in the
books today as the universities,
headed by favored Abilene Chris-
tian, and the colleges, speared by
defending champion Texas South-
ern, swung into the Border Olym-
pics.
The record-smashing came Fri-
day as the junior colleges, with
Howard County appearing the
class of the field, and San Antonio
Highlands, projecting itself as the
favorite in the high school class,
opened' the big track and field
carnival.
The junior colleges and high
schools have finals Saturday aft-
ernoon while the university and
college classes, going through pre-
liminaries Saturday morning, cli-
maxed the meet with their finals
Saturday night.
A galaxy of records appeared
in the offing in all classes with
the university and college divi-
sions due to produce more than a
half-dozen marks.
The pole vault standard ap-
pears certain to fall since Dexter
Elkins of Southern Methodist,
Fred Hanson of Rice and Baylus
Bennett of Texas all have done
over 15 feet and the record is
only 14-1%.
Jerry Dyes of Abilene Christian
should crack the javelin record
of 227-9^ inches since he made
241-1*4 last week.
And such stars as hurdler Ray
Cunningham of Texas, quarter-
miler Earl Young of Abilene
Christian, two-miller Pat Cloth-
essy of Houston and shot putter
Danny Roberts of Texas A&M
aimed at some of the top records
of the big meet.
Larry Moulding of Howard
County vaulted 13 feet 314 inches
to set one of the junior college
division records. Gary Walker of
Howard County threw the discus
147 feet 8 inches to set another
and Tommy Yarbro of Howard
County tied the 440-yard dash
record with 49.8.

ed up a three-game total of 634

a smashing 257 (just eight points
short of Fred Switzer’s record),
rolled an individual series that
broke the old record by three
pins. The old record was a 631
held by Jim Bucek.
The new women’s record for a

Bass Tourney
Set April 12-15
WACO (J) — There’ll be a
West Texas flavor in I he State
Bass Tournament April 12-15.
Earl Golding, who directs the
tourney for the Waco Tribune-
Herald, says fishermen from such
towns as Abilene, Midland, Odes-
sa, and San Angelo figure to be
well represented with bass ang-
lers.
The meet is being held for the
first time in West Texas, on two
San Angelo lakes, North Concho
and Nasworthy.
Bobby Jones says a fishing club
;s being organized in Abilene, and
he expects a lot of fishermen to
compete at San Angelo.
Midland’s top hand will prob-
ably be Gordon Schmitt, who won
he bass championship in 1960 on
Lake Whitney.
