LICE MITES AND BLUE BUGS
a
F. W. KAZMEIER
Texas A. & M. College
Now that i( is getiing warmer
weather every day poultry raisers
must fight a continual war against
lice, mites and blue bugs. Success in
this work, to a large extent, depends
on the start you get on them. If they
get a start on you it will mean much
harder and persistent work on your
part to keep them under control.
Tbrefore^.right now is the time to
•• kill these parasites.
To kill the red mites we have found
common keresene applied with a
brush or sprayer satisfactory. These
mites prey on the chickens at night,
hiding in the daytime under the
roosts, roost supports, nests, nesting
material, wall and building and. in
cracks and crevices about the house
and fixtures. To them it is necessary
to touch them with something like
kerosene crude carbolic acid or some
strong disinfectant. Most fruit tree
sprays will also kill thse mites. Kero-
sene has a tendency to soak and
spread, hence is especially recom-
mended for this work. Beaumont oil
is satisfactory. The nesting material
had best be burned and the entire
nests inside and outside sprayed with
a 1 to 25 solution of a coal tar dis-
infectant. A disinfectant not only
kills the mites, but acts as a germ
riestroyc!.
Keep the houses and yards scrupu-
lously clean. Lice and mites breed in
filth. It is necessary to be on the war-
path for lice and mites regularly at
least once a week or oftener.
The lice, which are parasites living
on the fowl day and ngiht, some by
sucking their blood and others by
feasting on the feathers and scales of
the body, are very troublesome. They
not only arc undesirable company be-
cause they suck the life-giving fluid,
but they cause much irritation and
many sleepless nights. There are few
if any fowls in Te*as perfectly free
from lice. In fact, a large number are
literally alive with them. Such indi-
viduals cannot lay or grow' at a profit.
They have all they can do in keeping
themselves and the lice and mites
alive. We have never found it profit-
able to raise both at the same time.
One or the other must go.
There are various ways of killing
these lice. One of the best is by dust-
ing each individual with a good lice
powder Catch the fowls and hold
them by the feet over a newspaper to
catch the powder that does not re-
main in the feathers. Next work the
powder well down into the feathers,
especially around vent, neck and un-
der w-ings. Some prepared lice pow-
ders are satisfactory. A good home-
made lice powder is made as follows :
Take 2Yz pounds of plaster of paris

and place is a shallow tray. Then in
another yessel mix together one-
fourth pint of crude carbolic acid (90
to 95 per cent strength) and three-
i fourths pint of gasoline Next mix
the crude carbolic acid and gasoline
mixture with the plaster of pairis in a
shallow tray. Run the resulting mix-
ture through a very fine wire window
screen and allow to dry. Keep in air-
tight can for use. This lice powder
was formulted by Mr. Lowery, for-
merly assistant of the Cornell Uni-
versity poultry department. It can be
made at a cost of only a few cents
per pound and is strong. All of the
ingredients going into the formula
can be purchased from <m> drug
store.
The minute louse causing scaly-leg
should never be tolerated. Soak the
affected shanks in warm, soapy wa-
ter to make it possible to remove
some of the foreign substance. Next
apply carbolated vaseline. Another
but much harsher treatment is to dip
shanks and toes for a second into
kerosene. Do not hold the shanks in
this harsh and penetrating fluid any
longer than just a second.
The well-known head louse com-
monly found on the heads and necks
of small and half-grown chicks each
year kills thousands of chicks in
Texas alone. This louse sucks the
blood of the host and is generally
found on the back of the head and
neck. It is easily killed. All that is ne-
cessary is to grease the affected parts
If your small or growing chicks ap-
pear stunted droopy or sleepy, make
a good search for head lice.
Provide a natural dust bath for the
fowls; they require it as much as the
sparrows that you see dusting them-
selves so frequently.
The blue bug, though many times
larger than the red mites, resemble
them in some respects. They prey on
the fowls much in the same way as
the red mites, but on account of their
size are much more injurious. They
work at night and hide and sleep in
the daytime. They are a trifle harder
to combat, but in neighborhood build-
ings, fences and even in the bark of
trees. The only way to kill them is
by soaking their retreats with kero-
sene, some other strong disinfect-
ant, or by fumigating them with some
strong gaseous odor that is very
penetrating. To successfully combat
these the house should be made so
as to afford as few hiding places as
possible. Keep everything clean and
/disinfected regularly. Fight these bugs
while they are only in small numbers.
We rarely ever meet a man, wo-
man or child who will admit that
their home town and community has
a superior. It is also true that they
will resent any insinuation that they
taiWto do iheir full share toward bet-
tering their communities in every
way possible.
However, we occasionally run
across some person who proudly
lays claim to a lion's share of the
credit due for the advantages of the
community in which he or she lives,
but who at the same time does those
thingsthat tend to retard rather than
promote local development and wel-
fare.
For example : A woman who lives
in one of our smaller towns reluct-
antly admitted that she buys her
“nicest” clothes, furniture, etc., out
(of town. The only reason she could
give for this action was that she de-
manded better goods than are kept
by local merchants.
Now this woman is sincere in her
belief that she is an important fac-
tor in the development of her town
and community. She simply doesn't
realize that her local stores are the
very backbone of local prosperity.
The ridiculous feature of the siiua-
tion is that she regularly buys a
brand of"sh««s carried by one of her
