Isaac Hayes leads
the signing of the
“Pledge to
America’s Children
and Families”
Renowned musician, composer
and actor, Isaac Hayes, led a group
of entertainers, human rights ad-
vocates, educators and clergy in
the signing og a “Pledge to Amer-
ica’s Children and Families” de-
manding that all psychiatric and
psychological programs, testing
and personnel be eliminated from
schools so that education can be
returned to academics.
The Pledge continues a two-year
grass-roots educational campaign
to raise awareness about what nas
brought America’s education sys-
tem to chaos: Today, 13% of
American 17 year-olds are func-
tionally illiterate (can’t read above
the fourth grade level.) According
to the Third International Math
and Science Study, involving 45
countries, the US came well below
average in math, ranking 28 which
is well behind countries such as
Russia and Canada. The study
found that even simple arithmetic
stumped students. The figure may
run as high as 40% among minor-
ity youth. Arrests of 13 to 17 year-
olds for murder has increased
212% between 1987 and 1992 and

the necessity of cutting funding to
the prevalent psychological and
psychiatric programs, assessments
and tests which have fueled this
decline
The “Pledge” was originally
signed during a 1995 Washington.
D C press conference by a coali-
tion of parents, educators, state
legislators, members of Congress
and grass-roots groups represent-
ing over 40 million Americans
The coalition had gathered in
Washington to urge Congress to
cut the funding of an education
package including “Goals 2000”
which would have funnelled bil-
lions of federal tax dollars toward
extending the influence of psychia-
try in the schools. The pledge
states
“We the undersigned, untie to
restore American education to the
quality and standards that once
made our country’ great.”
“We pledge to eliminate Goals
2000, all dangerous and invasive
psychiatric/psychologically based
programs, assessments and tests
from our schools and funding
thereof.”
“We pledge to return America s
schools to an academic curricu-
lum, utilizing proven educational
methods for factual knowledge and
skills.”
“We pledge to make education
v accountable to the people . ”
