For these reasons amongst others wc enter this
our solemn protest against (he right of the honor-
aide Richard Ellis to a seat in the scnato of the re-
public of Texas; and wc claim our constitutional
privilege of having .it.rccorded on the journals oTthia
senate that posterity and the world anajTknow the
course we have taken in this m itt2r and the motives
which' induced it.

WEDNESDAY FEBRUARY M lwa.
The following is the result of the Election for
"Town Officers on the 31st January lash
Mayor. Harvey Kendrick.
Aldermen EdwavdL. Holmes Wm. J. Maynard
A. Wadsworth George M. Collinsworth Cliarlcs
Howard Thomas Stuart Rufus M'Lcllan R. H.
Wynne.
Ata meeting of the Board on (he Gth instant the
(following gentlemen were unanimously elected:
Treasurer. Charles A. Bullard.
:Sccrctary. 'James Norton.
In our paper of to-day will bo found the Brigade
fOrders of Col..II. McLood Adjutant General of the
JMilitiaofTexas.
AVe sincerely hope that the gentlemen appointed
to superintend the elections and more particularly
.those upon whom may be conferred the command
of the companies will discharge with promptness
and alacrity the important and responsible duties of
their stations. It affords us no little pleasure to be
able to offer our congratulations to the country upon
the certain and flattering prospect of a speedy and ef-
ficient organization of this general bulwark of our
.defence.
We cannot altogether concur in the opinion so
long and universally entertained in Europe that no-
thina but a standing army can oppose a standing ar-
.my when the numbers on each side are equal. If
JtJiad been our misfortune to have been torn and
educated in any other than a republican government
our convictions upon this subject would undoubt-
edly have been far different. But we have been
taught bv the nlorious deeds of the heroes of '76
and the brilliant and unparallclled achievment of
Texian.chivalry to jilace a higher estimate upon the
bkill and strength of a freeman's arm. A sentiu cnt
so clearly illustrative of the degenerating influence
..of despotic governments upon the spirit and patri-
otism of their.subjects can never be adepted by men
.who 'love liberty and who are at all times roady
to peril their lives and fortunes in its defence. The
jiatriot who draws his his sword in his country's
cause would disdain to plead a want of discipline
.if opposed by
'"WretchcdjkerncSj whose arms
Are hired to bear.thcir staves."
At least it will be conceded that the militia of
Texas would require nothing more than a timely
organization to repel successfully an invasion from
our weak and degraded foe. And surely it would
.not be regarded as presumptuous to assert that
:ahould our government in its wisdom deem it politic
to open an offensive campaign against our discor-
dant and prostrate enemy that she could employ
with unquestionable securitv this same powerful
nnn in extorting from her an acknowledgment of
independence.
The immortal Washington in nts last rtcn legacy
1o his countrymen says "In peace we should be
prepared for war." Let every Texian feel the ne-
cessity of this wise and patriotic admonition and
Mexico will ever find the militia of Texas an im-
pregnable bulwark to her audacity and insolence.
