Again It is raining, and hard time*
are waning; the young grass is spring-
ing; the glad birds are singing; soft
breezes are blowing; bright stream
let* are flowing; the cowboy Is gazing
at sleek cattle grazing; rich fruits are
maturing, with flavors alluring: sweet
flowers are blooming, and Alpine is
booming; men’s pockets are jingling;
—and all are oommlngling, In concert
sonorous to swell a grand chorus,
melodiously voicing the general rejoic-
ing.

there would be a prairie schooner for

Ever since Tuesday, parties have
been gathering, who were interested
in the long expected land rush, either
as applicants, “rooters” or spectator^
Yesterday afternoon they began to
gather in front of the door of the clerk’s
office In order to secure places of van-
tage. As soon as the door was locked
for the night, the applicants made a
rash for positions. A.T. Winder got
hold of the door knob, and held on In
spite of all efforts to dislodge him. l|k
is said there were some lively scuffles
at various times during tbe night, and
if any sleeping was done it was under
manifest disadvantages
When the Avalanche man arrived,*
dense mats of men was packed agaiust
tbe door aud a crowd of spectators was
standing around eujoyiug tbe fun. Tbe
look of stern determination on the
faces or those in tbe pack, the hard
breathing and now and thou an ecap-
log groan, showed bow tbe poor fellows
were suffer!i g. The trite simile -of
sardines In a box fall to convoy an idea
of the situation. While the editor was
gazing at this scone d voice behind him
said “Do you want to get in?’’ “Yes.”
Instantly he was picked upend pitched
toward the door, landing ou what oue
might call a floor of beads If it hadn’t
bean so uooveu and the projecting ones
so bard.
To protect his office from violence,
tbe clerk bad constructed a barracade
inside tbe door, so as to admit only one
man at a time. Prof. Edwards was
door-keeper, J. W. Phelps time keeder
and Depuli Clerk W. 11. Itagln offici-
ated at the desk. A way of ezlt waa
made through an open window.
Tbe door waa upeued ot 8 a. m, and
notwithstanding some delay earned by
Jen.* at th* door all the applications
were filed In lees then half an hour,
dome would bo applicants, seeing they
bad no chance to get what they want-
ed, withdrew rrom the contest.
