Al|in*haa been gradually growiug
for the paat year, but our anticipations
were, to put it mildly, sirnplv engulf* d
with consternation, when It Y Sharp,
of the Avalancak, a short'tree ago
announced that he intended u. bui d
a stone house he, himself doing the
work. Immediately our inyigmation
assumed abnormal propoi ti< ns, sad
we could cloee our eyes and note the
change wrought, aa day by day he
converted the old hill wbloh now forms
a back ground for Alpine, into im
mensj structures, standing out in all
• heir grandeur with (he artistic touch
of a sculpture visible in evey stone;
and when he secured a aet of tool*
with which to do the work, we felt
assured that our dreams won d become
a reality. However we mistrusted
that he had begun to weaken when we
suggest* d that he have good hanrilea
put In his hammers, he remarked that
huggv wheel spokes would do for
awhile. Hob Nevill volunteered to
carry all the stone he gut out. from
the quarry to the building site—he
hasn't carried any yet.
After arming himself with ham-
mers, drills, and a rapidly diminishing
supply of enthusiasm, he sallied forth
ai a hewer of stone. He retimed
shortly—very shortly—and reported
tahat the stone wouldn’t quarry well,
but would dress nicely, and that he bed
shaped up nIx or seven. We had an
I occasion, a few daya since, to stroll by
the quarry and saw a boulder about
3 feet thick with two holes about 3 in
deep, but could find none that had been
dressed —we would hate to accuse any-
one unjustly, hut it was a dirty meat)
trick to steal those rocks The tools
are not for sale, but we venture there
is a four bit piece for the man who
will steal them.

COMMISSIONERS COURT.
Tile Hon. Commissioners Court met
in rernlar session -Moodily, August 12
The icports of J W Phelps, assessor,
and I. H Carutliers, treasurer, were
approved.
Several warrants were ordered Issued
to liquidate claims against the county.
The Court instructed H C Thomas.
c< unt y judge, to invest the permanent-
school fund, (814,600) derived from the
Hale of Hchool land to C C Slaughter, iu
Hrev ster county bonds.
* * *
Judge Thomas deserves no little
credit for the manner in which lie
manipulated the land deal between
Brewster donnty and Mr Slaughter
Beside obtaining attorney's for coun-
sel employed to make an investigation
in regard to the validity of of the sale,
he saved the county available school
fund 9800, interest, which accrued
during the interval pending the invest-
igation. We feel safe in saying the
Judge’s action in the matter meets the
approbation of, at leant, a majority of
the citizens of Brewster County, and
for which lie in due an especial vote of
thanks.
