Hula hoops trump flowers, handsome escorts for Valentine’s Day

It was the first formal dress for
many of the girls as well as the first
corsage. Their dads escorted them
to the Fidelis Inter Se Daddy-
Daughter Dance on Saturday night
at the Celina Middle School.
The event is a major fundraiser
for Fidelis Inter Se, a women’s
group that performs projects bene-
fitting the schools and the commu-
nity.
Dads dressed in suits, a few out-
fits included cowboy hat and boots.
A highlight of the evening was
the hula hoop contests. The girls
were not hampered by being in for-
mal attire when it came to their ef-
forts to win the contest.
The major fun came during the
hula hoop contest for the dads.
Many of them disappeared when
that was announced, but a few
brave dads jumped in enthusiasti-
cally while their daughters took
pictures.
Fidelis Inter Se began in March
1951 when 25 Celina women organ-
ized a club as a social, educational
and civic outlet.
The club’s name means “friend-
ship between us.” The club joined
the Texas Federation of Women’s
Clubs and the General Federation
of Women’s Clubs during that year.
The club awards scholarships to
qualifying senior girls and partici-
pate in many other community
projects throughout the year.
The annual Daddy-Daughter
Dance raises funds for the club and
provides fathers and daughters a
way to spend time together during
a formal occasion.

Celina Fire Chief Mark Metdker holds up the type of sprinkler valve that
would be used in the kind of sprinkler system he wants to see installed
in new buildings in Celina. The system is less expensive than traditional
sprinkler systems and can be installed by plumbers. He gave a presen-
tation to the city council at Monday’s meeting during the work session.

At Monday’s regular
meeting, the Celina City
Council approved an outdoor
warning device fee for devel-
opers to offset the cost of the
city’s siren warning system.
Council members also ap-
proved an interlocal agree-
ment with Collin County for
the transfer of funds from
Collin County project at
County Road 5 to the city for
completion of a water utility
relocation at Texas Depart-
ment of Transportation sta-
tion 465 project.
A fee for outdoor warning
devices was approved. De-
velopers will be assessed $13
per acre to offset the cost of
the city’s siren and loud-
speaker warning system.
Items approved on the
consent agenda were an in-
terlocal agreement between
Celina and Denton for road
grading services on a portion
of Legacy Drive and an
agreement between Celina
and Triple Creek Academy
for the use of Old Celina
Park baseball and softball
fields.
In closed session the
council discussed Lewis
Dickerson and Dorothy S.
Stambaugh vs. the city of
Celina and negotiations to
purchase the building that
now houses city hall.
In the work session, Fire
Chief Mark Metdker made a
presentation advocating re-
quiring new buildings to be
built with a sprinkler sys-
tem. Metdker said a sprin-
kler system was now
available that could be in-
stalled by plumbers. The
topic was only a discussion
item in the work session.

Prosper Pooch Party
scheduled for April
The first Black History
Month event was held at Celina
High School in February 2001.
Every year since, the event
has been organized by former
Celina resident Delois Johnson.
Usually the event was held at
the Celina Museum or First
Baptist Church, but last year it
was held at the Celina Public Li-
brary.
On Sunday, the event was
hosted again by the First Bap-
tist Church. Johnson organized
a number of readings and a fash-
ion show. Seven ladies modeled
outfits like they were runway
experts.
