D e fense attorney seeks judge nomination
KELLEY CHAMBERS
kchambers@acnpapers.com
Barnett Walker dreamed of
becoming a lawyer since he was
12 years old.
During that one hot Texas
summer, the now 50-year-old
Prosper defense attorney was
brought to his mother’s down-
town Dallas beauty parlor.
Rather than endure hours of gos-
sip and hair chemicals, Walker
frequented the courthouse across
the street where he developed a
habit for observing cases.
“To me it was like watching
Perry Mason on TV,” Walker said.
“As I got older, I got more inter-
ested and I would think what I
would object to. It was always
better than being at the hair
salon.”
Today, Walker said he is ready
for that dream to come full circle
as judge for
the Collin
County Court
at Law No. 2.
Walker is one
of three can-
didates seek-
ing the
Republican
nomination
for the seat,
which was
vacated when
Judge Jerry Lewis stepped down
last year. The winner will serve
the remainder of Lewis’ term,
which expires in 2014.
Walker ran for County Court
at Law No. 3 two years ago and
missed the runoff by 52 votes, he
said. As someone whose current
campaign is endorsed by the
Plano, McKinney and Collin
County deputies associations,
and whose background boasts a
Walker
22-year military career, Walker
said he is the most qualified can-
didate for the job. Walker’s re-
sume also reflects years spent
with the district attorney’s office,
with colleagues on both sides of
the courtroom supporting his run
for the bench.
“It’s about treating people pro-
fessionally, doing one’s job and
doing it with integrity and hon-
esty,” Walker said. “These are all
people who are involved in crim-
inal trials, and 80 to 90 percent
of the county court is criminal tri-
als. It’s rare when all three peo-
ple all say, ‘That’s who we want
to hear these cases, because that
person knows the law.’”
Walker has been a defense at-
torney since mid-2008. Prior to
that, he traveled the world from
Honduras to Kosovo, including a
stint in the Gulf War. He was also
honored as the Air Force Senior
Non-Commissioned Officer of the
Year. During his military career,
Walker said he supervised 80 em-
ployees and a $100 million nu-
clear detonation detection
program. That responsibility re-
flects qualities needed for presid-
ing over misdemeanor and civil
cases for Collin County, he said.
“Collin County spends about
$150 million a year on our justice
system,” Walker said. “My proven
leadership, derived by serving in
the military, presiding as a judge
over mental health hearings, bal-
ancing a $100 million budget,
and prosecuting and defending
over 1,200 criminal cases, has
equipped me to develop programs
that will increase the safety for
our community and decrease the
costs of operating the court.”
In addition to reducing bond
amounts for nonviolent misde-
meanors, increased monitoring of
sex offenders and continuing the
county’s successful DWI Court,
Walker said also wants to rebuild
trust within the community.
Walker directly referenced for-
mer District Judge Suzanne
Wooten and former District Clerk
Patricia Crigger — both of whom
were found guilty last year of
conducting criminal activities.
Both are currently serving proba-
tion sentences and facing hefty
fines.
“Integrity is paramount and
right now we have great judges,
but you hear lot about distrust in
community about our judicial
system,” said Walker. “People
cannot lose faith in the judicial
system or our way of life and the
life of our government system
will collapse. They have to be-
lieve our court system is above
that and we have to rekindle that
faith that we had.”

Fire bums down trailer

When Smith spoke with
The Celina Record he had
not yet spoken with the
owners of the land and
trailer. The owner of the
land lives in Little Rock,
Ark.
Smith said he will give
the four boys an opportu-
nity to participate in a juve-
nile fire-setter intervention
program. Their parents also
will participate in the pro-
gram. The program in-
cludes classes, projects and
the boys will have to make
restitution.
“Hopefully we can turn a
negative experience into a
positive one. We’re lucky no
one was hurt or killed,”
Smith said.
Other residences were
only a few hundred yards
away from the grass fire,
Smith added.
