CTA plays quarterfinal games
today at Southwest Assemblies of

PAUL GNADT

The sun sank on the Ch-
isholm Trail Academy Blaz-
ers’ chances of winning a
state title last year, but things
are looking brighter for this
year’s tournament.
The Blazers and Lady Blaz-
ers open play today in the
Texas Christian Athletic Fel-
lowship state championship
tournament at Southwestern
Assemblies of God University
in Waxahachie.
The Blazers and Lady
Blazers are TCAF District l
champions and automatical-
ly receive the top seed in the
tournament. The Lady Blaz-
ers meet Dallas Academy at
noon. The Blazers play Dallas
Academy at 3 p.m..
If the Lady Blazers win,
they will play at 1:30 p.m.
Friday against the winner of
the Immanuel Christian El
Paso — Lucas Christian of Al-
len quarterfinal game. If the
Lady Blazers win Friday, they
will play in the TCAF Division
I state championship game at
6 p.m. Saturday.
If the Blazers (8-0 in dis-
trict, 18-7 overall) win, they
play at 3 p.m. Friday against
the winner of the quarterfi-
nal game between Westlake
Academy and Midland Trin-
ity Academy.
If the Blazers win Friday,
they play for the TCAF Divi-
sion I state championship at
7:30 p.m. Saturday.
“We need to have every-
one in Keene at the game to
increase the gate receipts at
SAGU to express our appre-
ciation to them for changing
the times,” CTA athletic di-
rector Ann Valdez said.
Last year, the Blazers
won quarterfinal and semifi-
nal games to qualify for the
TCAF finals. However, TCAF
officials refused to resched-
ule the game from 10 a.m.
Saturday to another time
that wouldn’t conflict with
the Adventist Sabbath.
When CTA announced
it could not play in the ti-
tle game, the Blazers were
awarded second place and
another team was awarded
the championship.
This year, TCAF officials
said the gymnasium at SAGU
was not available on Satur-
day night and any team that
could not complete its tour-
nament schedule would not
be allowed to participate.
However, late Feb. 10 the
scheduling conflict at SAGU
was resolved and CTA was
advised the semi-final games
will be Friday afternoon and
the championship games will
be Saturday night.

Keenes sales-tax revenue takes a turn for the worse
City is down 7 percent
from February 2010
PAUL GNADT
keenestar@thestargroup. com
Keene marches to a different
drummer than its Johnson County
neighbors, and now its sales-tax reve-
nue has turned south while everyone
else is heading north.
The city received $41,488 in sales-
tax revenue in February, a decrease
of 7 percent from the $44,684 it re-
ceived in February 2010, according
to figures released last week by state
comptroller Susan Combs.
“We hadn’t dropped until now,” fi-
nance director Bill Guinn said. “While
eveyone else was down, we were
holding steady. This is a little glitch,
but we’re still ahead of budget.”
The City Council approved a 5 per-
cent decrease in sales-tax revenue
when it adoped the 2010-2011 bud-
get, Guinn said.
“Although the sales-tax is out of
our control, I hope we get back on
track next month,” Guinn said.
For the calendar year, Keene has
received $70,203 in sales-tax reve-
nue, a reduction of 4.15 percent from
the $73,243 it received for the same
time period last year.
Februaiy’s local sales tax allocations
represent sales made in December, and
also include earlier sales by businesses
that report sales tax to the comptroller
on a quarterly or annual basis.
It’s a different story for other John-
son County cities.
Cleburne is up 12 percent over Feb-
ruary 2010 — $895,000 to $800,000
— and 14 percent for the calendar
year, $1.5 million to $1.3 million.
Alvarado is up 12 percent over Feb-
ruary 2010 — $97,775 to $87,428 —
and 18 percent for the calendar year,
$189,882 over $159,938.
Burleson is up 9 percent over Feb-
ruary 2010 — $1.4 million to $1.3
million — and 13 percent for the cal-
endar year, $2.4 million compared
to $2.1 million.
Combs’ March sales tax allocation
will be made on Friday, March 11.
Keene Adventist Elementary School sixth-grader Michael Ramirez, center, will serve as the alter-
nate to the Regional Spelling Bee after placing second at the Johnson County competition Feb.
10 in Cleburne. He is pictured with, in front from left, Principal Donna Berkner and sixth-grade
teacher Janet Lopez. In back are his parents, Jesus and Linda Ramirez.
Wave of vandalism
hits Elisa Carver Park
PAUL GNADT
keenestar@thestargroup. com
Vandals have caused about $2,000 damage to the rest-
rooms at Elisa Carver Park since mid January.
In separate incidents, stall doors in the women’s restroom
have been ripped off hinges, two water fountains have been
destroyed, graffiti has been spray-painted on the walls, the
privacy wall of the men’s restroom has been knocked over
and, last week, two toilet seats in the women’s restroom were
set on fire.
“We’re having to divert taxpayer dollars from other proj-
ects to pay for the repairs,” City Administrator Ismail Lopez
said. “This is our park. I am asking residents to be vigilant
and watch for and report any suspicious activity to our police
department.”
The restrooms have been locked until repairs are complet-
ed, Lopez said. The options for reopening them are to return
to the 24/7 schedule prior to the vandalism, be open only dur-
ing daylight hours, for special events such as softball leagues
or for reservations, Lopez said.
