morn! route lo San Felipe where there it a good fer-
ry. Every chiien that'has a horns not in use should
forthwith loan it to a volunteer. We learn that the
soldiers in campare alinotl destitute of coffee suqar
salt and tobacco; articles that are indispensable. They
now have only fresh beef and no bread stuff. They
"arc net for bread; if they can get good coflce beef
nd sah wicfc a little tobacco they will be quite con-
tented. We would therefore suggest that a quanti-
ty ofihrse article! be forthwith purchased by the Ci-
ty Council and forwarded to camp. If the City
Council will not do this our principal citizens should
instantly pledge their property to procure supplies.
We will cheerfully do our part and attach the name
of our firm to a pledge of this description. These ar-
liclrs should he obtained instantly a team is on the
way from Bajtrop and the ownci will take out the
articles immediately iffurnished. We hope the. City
Council will meet this morning and takedecisire step's
lo furnish the aid required ; the citizens demand it the
country demands it. We are. confident the Mayor
and Aldermen in this crisis will be true to the hitrh
charge they now occupy. A large quant'ty of pow-1
ocr ana jeaa wm oe sent out this morning by gov
ernment; this is probablyall it will do; privateciti
zens must do the n st Never lit it be said that ow-
It g to the apathy and selfishness of the citizens of
iiouston the enemy was permitted to escape.
Mr. Miskill states that news has also been received
:that the captives have all bemsent to Mexico and the
citizens of the west are desirous to beseige Bexar as
soon as possible in order that they may capture suffi-
cient prisoners to exchange for them. The report
given by the Mexican spy that Gen. Ampudia with
1500 men was expected to join Gen. Woll confirms
us in the belief that this is the whole forces that were
mentioned in tho litter lately received from Matamo-
rosas having started or Austin with ord-.rs to attack
thv. place and return All depends therefore upon
expedition if they can be surrounded in Bexar they
mav be captured before anv other forces can come
from the Rio Grande to their relief. No time there-
fore should be lost but every man thnj can leave his j
hoineshould hasten with the utmost despatch to join
the force before Bexar. One decisive blow now may
close the "second campaign." If Woll and his army
can be captured it may completely defeat the project
of Sana Anna and forever silence his threats of inva-
sion. To the west then to the west should be the
watchword throughout the Rrptiblic.
Gen. Bur!. -son has returned fiom his Indian cam-
paign with seventy five men and is probably by this
time with Col. Caldwell.
The number of Mexicans killed by the Fayette
band before thry fell has not seen ascertained it must
have been great however as they fought desperately
and did dot yield their ground until they were killed.
A gain the clang of arms ring throughout the city
and ail is life and bustle. Soldiers are seen hurrying
to and fro and the hoarse note of the drum and the
fn quint report of fire arm indicate that war is abroad
id the land. Ii is pleasing ho wevr to notice that no
indications of alarm or fcai nrr displayed; but every
coununanci: beams with confidence air! high hop.!.
Every ouc seems nnxious to exert himself to the ut-
most in rendering aid to the Western citizens. About
100 men will be prepared to start today for the west
anil probably as tunny more will start on Monday or
next day. Several citizi ns have with the most noble
gnerosity offen-d to furnish hoiseitothe volunteers
who arc in netd of them. The City Council with a
liberality that dors thrm groat credit have appropria-
ted all the license taxes now due and one hundred
dollars tor the purpose of furnishing supplies of pro-
visions etc.. for the army. If other sections of the
country will be as prompt and efficient as this in ren-
dering aid in the present emergency the most zealous
patriot will have no cause of complaint.

Editor of the Telegraph :
Sib: I arrived here yesterday on my way home
and met the alarming intelligence of our country's be-
ing agr.in invadid and San Antonio again in the
hands of the enemy the particulars of which you
have by yesterday's expn ss. I attended a spirited
meeting of the citizens of this county (Fayetti ) the
proceedings of which are on the first page. They
arcfor i.iimcdiatf and prompt action. It isthoucht
that 300 of the lighting men of this county will turn i

or 4 days Some think that the command under Gen-
ral Woll is the advance guard of a Mexican iva
dinga'riny and that there is probably another divis-
ion entering the country by the lower route. I do
nonhink so ju lging fiom the character of the letter
written by Jones and others but that is a feint I be-
lieve it to bea paity sent into the country to annoy
the frontier to keep it in constant alarm and break
up the western settlements. But be that as it may
prompt and decisive action should be taken to engage
the enemy put at flight and protect the western fron-
tier I hope the whole country may be awakened to
TJiCinrcssity of being in a state of readiness for any
rtnergtiicy. We are looking to-night for another ex-
press when I trust we shall be enabled tojudge better
of the character of the expedition. By to-morow the
.citizens of the whole Colorado valley will be in mo-
tion to rush on to the rescue of our fellow-citizens.
There has bern a general deluge of ram in this sec--tion
of country 2 or 3 weeks and the weather still
looks very lowry. The creeks arc all upt and our
progress will consequently be very much impeded. I
hope thit we' will not encounter trw confusion about
commanders that happened last spring and that the
President will take prompt steps to remedy the evil
from past cxpcriincc that there may bea proper con-
cert 1 action Union and obedience to orders of the
constituted authorities should be our vtotto.

Another express has just arrived from Wm. Small
"living eight miles below San Antonio who visited
-the town on Monday after the surrender and was
jsermittcd to depart and unmolested and says the
Mexican forces consist of the most miserable looking
jsn of beings that he ever saw under arms; docs not
late how many ; but that 700 cavalry was to leave by
he upper San Marks road for Gonzales; and that n
re-enforeement of 100 men under Col. Bravo with
ns reported 300.t)00 in specie for the payment of the
troops arrived that day; and that the merchants of the
JliojGrnde had purchased all the goods in San Anto-
nio and probability of the Americans being released
jjiat some forty of the American prisoners were to be
cat to Mexico in a few days. The Tcxans had a
fight before they were tak n and killed t wo Mexicans
woundhjg twenty-six six of whom since died. John
W. Smith gel away. The enemy shot his hor;e
from under him. No Auicricen:. hutt in the fight.

Capt. Caldwell better known ns "Paint Caldwell"
in a letter dated Seguin the 14th gives thectmp news
as follows: Antonio Perez with 250 men has left
San Antinio on the lower road for Gonzales to be on
the look out.-Caldwelfc is reported to have under his
command 150 men says in his letter lilell the families
down the Gaudnloupe not to be alarmed nor to move
until they henr from him says he shall push on to
San Antonio and tint a right was inevitable his own
opinion is that the Mexicans will retreat and that An-
tonio Penz was sent out to watch and cover their re-
treat The 250 men under Perez were part of the
700 mentioned by Small' as he speaks of Perez hav-
ing command of that number.
A. C. ALLEN.
Bio Foot killed. We are indebted to a gen-
tleman of Naihville for the following account of the
late skirmish in that section which resulted in the
destruction of the noted Eig Foot and three other In-
dians. "About three weeks since tt ere were a few horses
stolen from the settlement of Contain Daniel Monroe
on Little River twenty-five miles above itscorll!'J"cc
with the Brazos. On the morning after they were
stolen the settlers of the neighborhood collected in the
small prairie from whence the horses had been taken
& soon discovered the prints of Indians among which'
was the well known track of the notorious' Big Foot.'
The whites immediately took the trail and pursued it
at a brisk gate until they arrived at the residence of
Mr. Bryant the upper settlement on Little River
and about fifteen miles above Monroe's. They there
re-info reed and continued their pursuit of the Indians
After travelling fifteen miles above Bryant's through
a tremendous rain they uncxpc:tedlycame upon the
Indians who had stolen their horses the previous
nigl t At the time they were discovered they were
busily engaged skining a buffalo which they had
just killed; and before they were apprised of their
dangerous proximity to their enem'cs the settlers
were so near to them as to preclude the possibility of
their escape. So soon as the Indians perceived the
whites advancing upon them they dropped their
knives and flew to their guns which were lying a
few paces from them upon the ground. The whites
instantly leveled thei' pieces and attempted to fire but
their guns were so wet that only two of them went
ofT and they without effect. The Indians followed
the example and vith similar success The whites
now clubbed their guns and rushed with seeming
desperation upon their no less desperate antagonists
A bloody conflict ensued in which the whites were
gloriously triumphant 1 Not a solitary Indian es-
caped to tell the mournful talc of their recent adven-
ture! The. whites received but little injury. Among
the slain was the celebrated ''Big Foot" who had
long been the terror of the whole northern frontier.
The whites recovered all the stolen horses but one
and took a fine mule the Indians had probably stolen
elsewhere. The names of the individuals who par-
ticipated successfully the fight were Capt Monroe
Mr. Ross Mr. Bryant and Mr. Woolfalk.
FIFTEEN DAYS LATER FROM EUROPE
The Caledonia arrived at Boston on the 2d inst..
in 14 dnys from Liverpool bringing accounts to the
19th uIl The most interesting part of the intelli-
gence is that of the mobs in the manufacturing dis-
tricts some d tails of which are given below. Let-
ters of the latest dates state that the mob had burtt Sir
Robert Peel's d.velli.ig house nl Tamworth. The
government were adopting strong measures for the
suppression of the disorders and it was believed th?y
would soon biing about order if not perfect quid.
Parliament had been prorogued by her Majesty in
person.
The extraordinary cutbreaks in the manufacturing
districts had served somen hat to depress trade but it
was thought it would again revive.
Several extensive conflagrations had taken place
in Germany. The town of Tamliach was almos'
entirely consumed; fifty out of five hundred houses
being left standing. J he village of Bechtrf in Wur-
tcmburg had been vijitedl by a destructive fire in
which five children lost their lives.
On Mondaythe 16th Mr. Forsvth Searcher of the
Customs boarded and seized and took possession of
the line steam frigate Montezuma lying oil Black-
wall Iondon for being manned and armed and
destined to assist the Mexicans in hostile operations
against Texas contrary to the foreign enlistment act.
The Montezuma is of beautiful construction and great
power and from the superior style in which she is
officered manned and equipped it is supposed that in
n proper cause she would do credit to the country
that has fitted her out.
The riots that have taken place in Manchester are
imitated in almost all the manufacturing towns in
the counties adjoining.
