Charleston News
By Vicki Vasco
We are still having hot, dry
weather in the East End.
Maybe we will soon get a
good rain.
Gary and Tommie Regan have
a new little great grandson,
their first. He was born last
Thursday, June 17. He has
been named Gage Michael
Plata. They had his picture at
church Sunday. He is a little
doll. Parents are Michael and
Regan (Garrett) Plata of Paris.
Grandmother is Lisa (Regan)
Frazier of Paris.
Madison and Lettie Horchem
both won a goldfish last
week.
Our candle lighters at the
Methodist Sunday were
Brazos Phillips and Tommy
Shane Ingram. They were
also ushers, with the help
of Journi Ingram, Madison
Horchem, and Jake Horchem.
Lyn Phillips helped Gary
with church Sunday by
leading the singing, reading
the scriptures, and leading the
responsive reading. Sandra
Morgan was in charge of
the Children’s sermon and
Children’s Sunday school.
Since Sunday was Father’s
Day, we honored our dads
by bringing their pictures to
church and displaying them.
Robert Lee Nabors of Redoak
visited his dad, Grover
Nabors, Sunday. They had
dinner with Katie.
Katie Malone, Grover Nabors,
and Shirley Smith visited their
uncle Jelly George and his
family Sunday afternoon. His
family had lunch at the home
of his daughter Peggy and
her husband James Shelton in
Sulphur Springs.
Remember, the Delta County
Historical Commission is
meeting at the Patterson
Memorial Museum Tuesday,
July 6, at 6 p.m. Everyone is
welcome. Please come and
join us.
The East Delta Baptist Church
honored their graduates last
Sunday.
Don Smith visited with Jerry
Brazeal of the Broadway
community one day last
week. Don reported that Jerry
is feeling much better.
At the spring banquet, the
ones recognized in the
Lamar/Delta Retired Teachers
Association with having
perfect attendance at that
meeting in the 2009-2010
season were Barbara Calvin,
Betty Slakey, and Shirley
Smith.
Remember, the Kensing
Reunion is Sunday, July 4,
at the East Delta Community
center. I hope to see you
there. We will have lunch at
12 noon. Come and bring a
covered dish item.
The Charleston Homecoming
is Sunday, August 1. Murray’s
Bar-b-cue will cater that
lunch.
Birthdays: Sammy Lynn
Miller 7/3; Ken James 7/4;
and Dennis Pearson 7/6.
Happy birthday, folks!
Have a great week!
Klondike News
_By John dr Elizabeth Hopkins_
I begin this week on a personal note. John and
I traveled to Weatherford, TX, last weekend
to help celebrate my parents 70th wedding
anniversary!! My sisters and I had a reception
in their church for family and friends near
and far. Some came from Arkansas to bring
blessings and greetings. There were phone
calls and cards from all over the country as
well. All nine of my parents daughters were
there as were 7 sons-in-law. (One son-in-
law couldn’t make the trip from Alaska but
phoned his greetings.) Friends from 40
and 50 years ago were present to celebrate
as well. I don’t know how many actually
attended the reception but there were about
70 family members mixed in with friends
and neighbors. After the larger reception, the
family adjourned to a community center for
a hamburger and hot dog cook out and more
visiting. The sisters stayed for an hour of
“sister time” after everyone else left. It was a
very special day for us.
Also, the Fourth of July is upon us and the
Klondike Volunteer Fire Department has their
fundraiser scheduled for Sunday afternoon
July 4. They will serve hamburgers and hot
dogs beginning about 1:00 pm. Hamburgers
will cost $5.00 and hot dogs will be $3.00.
With either choice, you also get chips, a
drink and a dessert. As usual, there will be a
fireworks display about dark. Come out, have
a good time, celebrate the Fourth and help our
fire department be prepared to help us should
we need it. Bring chairs or blankets to sit on
for the fireworks. See you there!
Phillip Stone said he had a good Father’s
Day. All of his children and a number of his
grandchildren visited him either on Sunday
or during the week. Glenn and Louise Stone
visited earlier in the week. Sharon and Larry
Jordan, Roger and his wife were there on
Sunday as were several other family members
to share a wonderful meal.
Patricia Blundell said she had a very special
visitor this week. Little Gus was in the
neighborhood and spent some time with
Patricia. She also had a visit with Cassie
Gunn and Brionna this week. Patricia also
heard from all her children.
George and Pearl Foster had all their children
and all the grandchildren (except the one in
Kentucky who phoned his greetings) at their
home for Father’s Day lunch. Their oldest
grandson grilled hamburgers outdoors, but
went inside to eat! (Good plan.) They had a
great time with lots of joyful noise. Pearl’s
sister Anna and her husband Bill joined the
group to share the children and grandchildren
for the day since theirs are in South Carolina.
Jerry and Faye Robnett had grandchildren
Jacob and Elizabeth for about 4 days this week
and enjoyed the visit.
Wanda and Billy Helms had all their children
and most of their grandchildren at home for
Father’s Day. (Leah was excused to be with
her father.) Lisa and Wanda met in Paris this
week for lunch and some shopping. Wanda
took the girls to the lake to swim one day.
Wanda and Billy went to Sulphur Springs for
lunch at Juan Pablo’s - just the two of them!
On Friday, Steve and Tina Rainey went to
White Oak and met several of Steve’s sisters
at the fish restaurant there. They ate fish,
rested and did a lot of visiting!
Larry George had his children this weekend.
They went to the church playground to have
fun in the shade of those big, old oak trees.
Sunday night they had a cook out with the
children, Misty, Larry’s Dad, sister Carmen,
her daughter Trinity, his Mom and Shaver.
Earl Thomas celebrated Father’s Day all week
long! On Tuesday, Tim, Em, and Harrison
came for the day. Randy and Cynthia joined
them for a meal. Harrison had his earlier and
provided entertainment for the group! Then,
on Wednesday, Mike and Lina came bringing
lunch and gifts. They had a good visit as
well. On Sunday, Brad and Wendy joined the
Thomas’ for lunch. After a good rest Sunday
afternoon, Earl and Maggie went back to
church to hear Malcom Ellis. Randy attended
church with Earl for Father’s Day.
Wanda and Nevoy Johnson had Tim, Nikki,
and their children and Mikka and Maddison
come Sunday evening for a hamburger cook
out to celebrate Father’s Day. It was a double
celebration also in honor of Carley’s 13th
birthday! Congratulations, Carley. While
there, Nikki got a phone call telling her that
her classroom along with some others had
been vandalized. Some TV’s were stolen,
but other losses were not readily visible since
most things had been packed up for moving to
the new school.
