Charleston News
By Vicki Vasco
We have sure been getting
some nice rain in Delta
County. What some beautiful
days we are having!
Dolores Jackson went
her son John to Hot Springs,
Arkansas to a credit union
meeting from Wednesday to
Friday of last week. Friday
morning they went to Little
Rock to visit the William
Jefferson Clinton Presidential
Library and Museum on
the Arkansas River. The
library is very interesting
and impressive. On the way
home they visited President
Clinton’s birthplace in Hope,
Arkansas.
Kendra Ingram had a
birthday party for Journi Cate
Sunday. Lots of little friends
attended. Journi is now 5
years old.
Birthdays: Jelly George
4/28; Bobbie Huie 4/29;
Wendy James 5/5; Leo
Millard and Jack Chambliss
5/7; and Avon Lie 5/8. Happy
birthday, folks!
Our condolences are for the
family of Loyd Ray “Sonny”
Sneed of Grand Prairie,
formerly of the East End.
Sonny passed away April 13.
He was buried in the East
Delta Cemetery.
The Delta County Library
luncheon was Wednesday. Jan
Lewis and her students and
Judy Falls and Karen Falls
and the other ladies from the
library did and outstanding
job. The food was delicious.
Thursday the Lamar/Delta
Retired Teachers read and
handed out books to the pre-K
students at Cooper Elementary
School. Friday another group
of the Lamar/Delta Retired
Teachers read and handed out
books to the Chisum pre-K
students.
The Daughters of the
American Revolution met at
the home of Carolyn Burks in
Fairlee Saturday.
The youth from the East
Delta Baptist Church and
the Charleston Methodist
Church had a joint meeting
Wednesday. The women
from the Methodist Church
prepared Mexican food for
them.
Nan Beeler is having an
animal vaccination clinic at
the East Delta Community
Center Saturday, April 24.
Dawson Hamner’s soccer
team, the Hot Shots, won their
game Saturday. He scored 2
goals.
Grover Nabors and Shirley
Nabors Smith attended a
Diabetic Clinic in Paris
Tuesday, April 13.
Several ladies attended
the Delta Kappa Meeting
(Teachers and Retired
Teachers) at the Cooper High
School Monday evening.
Katie Malone, Shirley Smith,
Diane Stegall, and Emily
O’Conner were hostesses.
Marva Sansing was the guest
speaker. Nancy Blount was
the hostess at the Alpha Delta
Kappa meeting in Sulphur
Springs Monday evening.
The Delta County Fair at
the park in Cooper was well
attended Saturday. Jaydan
Staggs told me that he won the
Bottle Calf Grand Champion
at the Livestock Show. I don’t
know who the other winners
were. The Business’ Men
Rodeo was great Saturday
evening, even though we had
rain. There were several teams
participating in that rodeo.
The only one that I saw from
Charleston participating was
Wesley Dean Houchins. He did
a great job in all the events. He
rode for Automatic Gas. Katie
and Shirley were working at
the gate. Charleston’s own
Rev. Gary Regan said the
opening prayer.
Jacie Phillips sang a special
song at the Methodist Sunday
morning. Brazos Phillips and
Tommy Shane Ingram were
candle lighters and ushers.
The Ingram twins helped them
as ushers. Jennie Pickering
had the Children’s Church
and Sunday school. Judy Falls
helped Gary with the service.
She read the scripture and led
the Responsive Reading.
Have a good week!

Books handed out to Delta and
Lamar County Pre-K students
The Lamar-Delta Retired Teachers read to the Headstart and
PreK students at the Cooper Elementary School and Chisum
Elementary School.
Every Headstart and
PreK student in Lamar
and Delta County public
schools now have their very
own books, thanks to the
efforts of the Lamar-Delta
Retired Teacher and School
Employee Association. That
amounts to 693 books. Book
presentations were held in
each of the schools during
the first two weeks of April.
The Cooper School children
received their books on April
15, when a group of Retired
Teachers from the various
school districts throughout
Texas, read to each of three
Headstart and one Pre-K
class.
This program has been
going on in Texas since
1995. Locally, members of
the association purchase
children’s books suitable
for their reading level and
members visit each school and
read a story to the students.
This storybook is presented
to the teacher as a class book
and each child is presented
their own book.
Those participating in
the program were: Barbara
Calvin, Zelda Fisher, Bobbie
Rainey, Betty Slakey, Dianne
Thomas, Pat Waters, Betty
Wiggins, Ruth Wigley and
special guest reader Lucinda
Huschke.
Mandy Freeman
for
Cooper ISD Board of Trustees
I would like to take this opportunity and introduce myself and family to
those of you who may not already know me. My name is Mandy Freeman
and my husband, Blair, and I have been married for nine years. I moved
to Delta County ten years ago and Blair is a life-long resident of Delta
County. We have been blessed with two children. Garrett will start to
kindergarten in August and Kerstin will start in 2011.
I graduated from TAMU-Commerce in 1999 with a BS degree in Agri-
Business. I have been employed for the past 11 years at Agriland Farm
Credit in Sulphur Springs. Prior to 1999,1 worked part-time for four years
at Agriland while I was attending high school and college. I am currently
the Vice President and Branch Manager of the Sulphur Springs office.
Blair is self-employed as a full-time rancher and order buyer. He is also
the auctioneer for Cattlemen’s Livestock Commission in Paris. We are
active members of the First Baptist Church and I am currently serving as
President of the Delta Co. Jr. Heritage organization.
I have gained a wealth of knowledge and experience throughout my career.
As a lender, I have the experience and knowledge of finance in all aspects,
the ability to work with others, the ability to deal with difficult situations
and the capacity to make sound decisions. My role as a branch manager
has given me the skills of interviewing, budgeting, communication,
supervising employees and leading employees to accomplish goals and
objectives through teamwork.
I grew up in Clarksville and attended Clarksville schools. I had the
privilege of having my dad as my junior high principal and my mother
as a high school business teacher. If anyone has the understanding and
compassion for educators, believe me, I do.
Every child should be given a chance and the opportunity to receive
an education and we should provide them with the resources to do so.
Cooper ISD is a solid school district with an excellent group of teachers
and administrators behind it and we need to keep it that way.
If elected to serve on the Board of Trustees, I will do my part to see
that the best decisions are made for the betterment of our children and
future leaders and put their education first. I will make decisions as a
conservative individual and as a taxpayer.
Vote May 8th for Mandy Freeman for Cooper
ISD Board of Trustees
