Klondike News
By John & Elizabeth Hopkins
Well, it is still Summer and
it is still HOT! I am more
than ready for this heat to
end as I suspect you are. But
I think that the crudest blow
of all was the ONE DAY that
didn’t reach 100 degrees and
then we went right back up to
100+. If we have to have all
this heat, seems like we could
have kept that day and made
a much longer streak. That
one 99 degree day was no real
relief - just broke the string!
Hopefully this week will see a
string of below 100’s for high
temps. It is about time.
Wanda and Nevoy Johnson
had granddaughter Maddie
overnight Saturday. Maddie’s
mom Mikka came to pick her
up on Sunday and visited with
the Johnsons for a few hours.
Phillip and Allie Stone
had Louise visit on Sunday
for their regular family Bible
study. Son Glen visited a
couple of times and daughter
Sharon was in almost daily
helping with medications.
Patricia Blundell heard
from all her children this week.
She also visited with Cassie
Gunn and her three daughters
Tatiana, Dionna, and Brionna
and with Braden.
Stella Martin’s visitors this
week included granddaughter
Cassie, and Tatiana, Dionna,
Brionna, Braden and Joe
Bill. A quick pop-up shower
started while I was on the
phone.
Jerry and Faye Robnett
also had a “splash and dash”
shower on Sunday afternoon.
(I’m jealous - we didn’t get
one at our house!)
George and Pearl Foster
attended the Foster reunion at
Enloe on Saturday. There was
a good group in attendance
including a large group of
“little ones”. According to
Pearl, they really added to
the day and reminded her that
the family was still growing.
After an afternoon of good
food and long visits, everyone
went home.
Mable Wheat and Mr.
Miller served a group of
about 25 people on Saturday.
They were a group of old
car enthusiasts from Paris.
(They are also enthusiasts of
Mable’smilkshakes!) Mable,
Jerrell and Alice went to the
fish fry at church on Saturday
evening. She said the food
was great. (Of course, she
had missed lunch that day.)
Wanda Helms’ family had
a special lunch on Sunday
to honor Houston, Mark and
James on their birthdays.
Friday night, Wanda, Sandra,
Trina and Tay sia went to a Jeff
and Sherry Easter concert.
The Easters took requests at
one point and Tay sia made
one. To her delight, she was
invited onstage to sing the
song with them. Way to go,
Taysia!
Nelma Dodd attended a
50th wedding anniversary
celebration for a dear friend
on Sunday afternoon.
Earl and Maggie Thomas
celebrated their mutual
birthdays all week this week.
They had lots of cards and
calls during the week. On
Tuesday the Thomas were
totally surprised when they
arrived at the recovery
group meeting at New Life
Baptist Church. The group
had decorated the tables and
walls with birthday greetings.
There were cards and posters
everywhere. And there was
a banner reading “Happy
Birthday, Earl and Maggie”
hanging from the ceiling.
Bro. Larry Maynard, their
pastor and long=time friend,
was the special speaker for the
evening, giving his testimony
with his message. After a
chicken dinner, everyone
had birthday cake. (Yum!) A
photo of the group was taken,
framed and presented to
Maggie and Earl on Sunday.
Maggie and Earl celebrated
their birthday (August 20)
by going out for lunch and
some shopping. Maggie had
two special birthday wishes
from long time friends Betty
from Garland and Patti June
from Houston. (Maggie and
Betty were attendants in each
other’s wedding years ago!)

Regulation of
campaign signs
AUSTIN - Political elections are usually accompanied by
an increase in the number of campaign signs placed along
roadways this time of year.
State transportation officials want to make sure citizens and
candidates are aware of the laws regulating their placement on
state highway right of way.
Under Texas law, it is a class C misdemeanor to place any
sign on state highway right of way. The penalty for violating
this law is a fine of up to $500 per sign.
It is legal to place a campaign sign on private property
adjacent to state highways with landowners’ permission.
Restrictions require that signs be constructed of lightweight
material and limited to 50 square feet in size. Signs may be
placed as early as 90 days prior to an election and must be
removed within 10 days after an election.
TxDOT officials say the laws are intended to reduce clutter
along highways so that official traffic control signs and vehicles
approaching intersections are clearly visible for the safety of
all the traveling public.
TxDOT’s regulatory authority allows the immediate removal
of a sign placed on state highway right of way without prior
notice, if the sign is not authorized by state law or approved by
the department. Signs posing potential safety hazards will be
removed as soon as possible.
Fees can be accessed to offending parties and continuous
disregard for state laws regarding campaign signs can lead to
further actions such as removal from the campaign.
Texas is subject to the Federal Highway Beautification Act of
1965. Under the federal law, if the state fails to control signage
visible from interstate and other federally-funded highways,
Texas may be subject to sanctions of up to 10 percent of its
federal transportation construction funds
