Cooper Review - Page 3
Charleston News
By Vicki Vasco
We had a cold, wet Mother’s Day in the
East End, but that didn’t decrease our
crowd at the Methodist Church. We still
had a large crowd. Helen Viser Anderson
and her daughter came from Commerce to
be with us. William Watson and William
Martello were our candle lighters,
and they served as ushers along with
Jerimah and John David James. Sandra
Morgan was the children’s Sunday
school teacher, and she had the church’s
children’s sermon also. Dolores Jackson
sang a lovely song, “I Am a Woman.”
Linda Baker, Tommie Regan and Susie
(Worden) are on a trip searching for
family history.
John Jackson was in Charleston for the
weekend.
I heard that Bill McFarland is ill. May
he be better in time for the East Delta
School Reunion, Saturday, June 2, so
that he will be able to join us.
Jake Vaughn, Kevin Slakey, and Jack
Chambliss were elected to the school
board Saturday.
Danny and Judy Swaim of Arlington
visited in the East End Sunday.
The Cooper High School Homemaking
Class and the ladies of the library had
a delicious salad lunch at the library
Wednesday. The students had on their
new chef jackets.
Birthdays: Buddy Smith and Lamarie
Worden 5/18; Betty Blagburn 5/19;
Mark Huie and Calvin Chessher 5/20;
Sam Long and Helen Smith 5/23. Happy
birthday, folks!
Lots of our children made last week’s list
of honor students in the Cooper Review.
Jalie Kay Swaim and Brazos Phillips
won lots of ribbons at the Chisum’s
school play day Friday.
The Delta United Methodist Women met
at the Enloe Methodist Church Thursday
evening for our annual picnic. Larry
King cooked delicious hamburgers for
us. Carol King was our speaker for the
evening. Her talk was titled “The Potter’s
Hand.” She did a good job.
The Agri Life Extension Ladies met at
the Civic Center Monday. Pam Derr was
our speaker. She talked about gardening
and fresh vegetables. It was a very
interesting talk.
Susie Nabors and Mark had a large
crowd at their house Saturday. Susie’s
children were in for Mother’s Day.
Robert Nabors visited his dad Grover
Sunday.
Have a good week.

The West Delta Community
Center is hosting a fundraiser
barbecue on Saturday May
29, 2010. Serving will begin
at 5:00pm and continue until
9:00pm (or until the food runs
out!) There will be brisket or
pulled pork that you can have
on a plate with trimmings
(potato salad, beans, etc)
for $7.50 or you can choose
a barbecue sandwich with
chips for $5.00. Also there
will be live bluegrass music
performed by the E.J. Cates
band. Come on out and enjoy
a great time.
Wanda Johnson said daughters
Nikki andMikka cooked lunch
for her on the grill. After
everyone had eaten, Wanda
treated herself to playing with
granddaughter Maddie while
the cooks had a well deserved
nap.
Phillip and Allie Stone had
Sharon visit almost daily this
week. Son Glen was also a
visitor. On Sunday Sharon
and husband Larry took the
Stones to Paris to visit other
family members. While
there they saw Louise Stone.
Before returning home they
also visited with Roger Stone
and his wife who have a new
house.
Pearl Foster cooked Mother’s
Day lunch for her family.
Her sons, daughters-in-law
and grandchildren joined
Anna and Bill Crowhurst at
the Foster home. They all
enjoyed a good long visit after
the wonderful lunch.
Mable Wheat had lots of
Mother’s Day visitors.
Hershal and Bennie were there
from Chappell Hill. Lee Ann,
Michelle, Dean and Jeffery
were there from Whitehouse
and Cooper residents Jerrell
and Alice joined the group as
well. Everyone went to the
spaghetti dinner benefiting
the Cooper Volunteer Fire
Department. (Mable said the
food was really good.) After
a long afternoon visit, they
were going to supper at the
local DQ.
Wanda Helms had a good
Mother’s Day, too. All her
family were there except Neal
and Kim, and Leah who all
had other family obligations.
Jacob and Amber were there
but left early to visit family in
Paris.
Stella Martin had Mother’s
Day lunch with Lorene and
her family. Later Billy came
by for a long Mother’s Day
visit. Stella’s other visitors
this week included Travis,
Betty, and Joe Bill (who
brought watermelon). Billy
and Stella went to the Dairy
Queen for supper on Friday.
Martha Clark said Kim and
Lisa served her a wonderful
lunch at Kim’s home. With
all her family there, it was a
wonderful Mother’s Day.
Faye Robnett had daughter
Sharon come for lunch. Also
attending were Sharon’s
husband David, David’s mom
Dora Johnson, Jeremy, Jacob,
and Elizabeth, Ray Dean and
his friend Misty. Faye also
had a call from son David in
California to complete her
Mother’s Day.
Patricia Blundell celebrated
her Mother’s Day on Saturday
when her girls came to visit.
Rebecca, Jerry and children
(Sarah, Josiah and Jonathan)
came from Itasca, Tina and
Jimmy Ray Love came from
Kensing. Billy Martin also
joined the group. While
everyone was there, Patricia
had a call from Ricky which
was like having all of them
home together.
Larry George had his children
this weekend. They went
home on Sunday morning
to be with their mom but he
picked them up on Sunday
afternoon to pay a visit to his
mother and sister for Mother’s
Day.
Earl and Maggie Thomas,
Glovon, Bro Larry and Brenda
and Bran and Wendy attended
the prayer and spiritual
awakening conference at
New Beginnings in Sulphur
Springs on Friday April 30.
The sessions were led by Dr.
Gregg Frizzell who spoke
on developing intimacy and
power with God. The topic for
the Saturday morning session
was “Prayers that Bring
Spiritual Breakthroughs”,
The conference ended with
the Saturday evening session
on “Spiritual Cleansing that
Brings Spiritual Renewal”.
Dr. Frizzell said that we spend
just a little time with God
then expect Him to answer all
our prayers. Maybe we need
more time WITH Him instead
of more FROM Him.
Randy Harrison attended
church with Maggie and Earl
as he does every Mother’s Day
when he is stateside. After a
great message and a request
for baptism next week from a
church member, Maggie and
Earl met Brad and Wendy for
a spaghetti lunch at the Cooper
VFD. Brad blessed Maggie
and Wendy by being a “go-fer”
for them at lunch. Maggie and
Earl had been home for only
30 minutes when Tim, Em and
baby Harrison arrived just as
Maggie popped the brownies
into the oven. Randy arrived
just in time to help eat them!
Later, all the men in the group
took a walk down Dog Town
Road, with Tim pushing
Harrison in the stroller. Kaye
Wickersham came out and
was introduced to Harrison.
While they were on their
walk, Maggie and Em opted
for a Mother’s Day nap!
