Gerald Teague
There are two candidates
running for sheriff during the
general election to be held
November 4, 2008. Sheriff
Gayland (G.R.) Wood is
the incumbent running in
the Democratic Primary for
sheriff. He lives in Cooper
and is the only child of the
late Mr. and Mrs. O.E. Wood.
His father served as sheriff
and county commissioner
of Delta County. He has five
children, six grandchildren
and two great-grandchildren.
He is seeking election
to the office of sheriff “to
continue to safeguard the lives
and property of the citizens
of Delta County, to continue
to upgrade the Sheriff’s
Department and to enforce
the laws of the federal, state,
and city to the utmost of my
ability.”
When asked what
his qualifications were
he responded “I have 25
years of Law Enforcement
experience. I have been Chief
of Police, Sergeant of Patrol
and Lieutenant over Patrol. I
have worked for City Police
and for County Sheriff’s
Departments. I have worked
in court rooms, served papers,
and worked in patrol of both
city and county. I was County
Commissioner for eight years
so I know how counties work.
I was on the volunteer fire
department for 17 years and
Fire Chief for ten of those
17 years. I also know how a
county jail must work.
Wood feels that the three
most significant areas of
concern are “taking drugs off
the street, this is an ongoing
problem, not just in Delta
County but everywhere;
taking sex offenders off the
streets, this seems to be an
increasing problem in Delta
County and to continue to
protect the lives and property
of the hard working citizens
of Delta County.”
If elected he says that he
“would utilize the assets of
the Delta County Sheriff’s
office in the manner to
enforce the law of the State of
Texas and the City of Cooper
and to address the concerns
using the funds for whatever
is needed according to the
budget allowed.”
To the voters of Delta
County Wood would like
to say “I want the voters to
know that I stepped into this
job at a critical time for Delta
County being appointed by
our current group of Delta
County Commissioners. I
have proven to be an effective
leader and am asking the
approval of the voters of
Delta County to continue my
pursuit of excellence.”
Gerald Teague is the
Republican Candidate
for the office of the Delta
County Sheriff. He lives
in Cooper and has lived in
Delta County for over four
years and is 58 years old.
He and his wife Vikki have
been married for 28 years
and they have no children.
He has two grown children
from a previous marriage, a
daughter and a son, who both
live in Springtown, Texas.
He has two grandchildren
and one great-grandchild. He
has owned property in Delta
County since 1995 and he
and his wife have been active
members of a local church
since 1998.
He is seeking the office
because he wants to improve
the quality of law enforcement
service to the citizens of Delta
County.
When asked of his
qualifications for the office,
he stated that he has “28
years of law enforcement
service with the Fort Worth
Police Department. I served
as: Patrol Officer, Patrol
Training Officer, Detective
in the Criminal Investigation
Division, Sergeant in the
Communications Division,
Sergeant in Patrol, Sergeant
in the Criminal Investigations
Unit-East Division, and
Sergeant in the Internal
Affairs Division.” He says
that his “years of service
with the Fort Worth Police
Department has afforded me
with the experience of being
a beat officer responding
to calls for service, writing
reports, traffic enforcement
and making arrests for all
sorts of crimes committed in
my area of responsibility.” He
graduated from Dallas Baptist
University with a Bachelor’s
of Business Studies in 2003.
He says he is qualified for
the position due to the wide
variety of law enforcement
experience he has particularly
in the area of supervision and
investigation.
Teague feels the three
most significant areas of
concern in the office he is
seeking are open government-
communication between
the Sheriff’s Department
and the citizens of Delta
County as well as working
with the member of the
Commissioner’s Court and
the Justice of the Peace Court;
reducing the crime rate and
the area of drug enforcement.
If elected, he says he
would “immediately inform
my staff of my philosophy
that all citizens will be treated
fairly and with respect. We
will patiently listen to the
concerns of the citizen and
take the appropriate and legal
action. We will be courteous
and professional in our
demeanor.” He says that “I
want to work in the spirit of
cooperation with members of
the Commissioner’s Court.
When I make a presentation
to the court for a request, I
will be prepared to inform
the court of the necessity
of the proposal or request. I
understand there is a budget
and it will be my job to stay
within budget.” He responds
that he “will work with the
Justice of the Peace Court
in that I will do my best
to ensure the deputies file
their paperwork completely
and accurately. It is not my
concern of the disposition of
the tickets or arrests.”
If elected, he says “I will
do whatever I can legally, to
reduce the amount of crime
in Delta County. My first goal
is to see that investigations
are complete and thorough
and that feedback is given
to the complainant. With
honest open communications
between the Sheriff’s
Department and the citizens,
I believe people will have
more trust and confidence in
the department.

enforcement and I have been
around them while they were
performing their duties.” He
