HITCHHIKING WITH A BOAT
More about the flood of 1982. From my ledger:
May 15,1982. Saturday. I’ve only flown twice,
once with cousin, Don Hargroves, and once
with Steve Blevins. Today, I rode with Steve
again. We wanted to see the flood from the air
so I left home at 8:15 in order to circle around
and get to the Sulphur Springs airport by 9:30.
Water was too high to go through Horton so
I went on to Commerce then took Highway
II to Sulphur Springs. Over the next couple
of hours we flew over most of the flooded
country and took about twenty five pictures.
After landing the plane back at the airport
Steve followed me to Charleston where
we joined Dean and Donna Houchins and
Jean to see the flood first hand from a boat.
At 1:30 we launched south of Charleston
heading for the Highway 37 Bridge north of
Hagansport. Along the way we saw several
armadillos hanging on to drifts waiting for
the water to go down. Also four beavers,
one alligator snapping turtle, one squirrel,
two cottonmouths, one diamondback water
snake, and two yellowbellied water snakes.
By 7:30 we had reached the bridge and pulled
the fourteen foot V bottom boat up to the
edge of the highway. I told the others that
I bet the first pickup would stop. Sure nuff,
Albert Goodson from Talco and his boy,
Woody, came by and offered us, and our boat,
a ride. Carried us the mile or two up to the
Hagansport Store at the intersection of 71
and 37 where we unloaded the boat. This is
several times I have hitch hiked with a small
boat and had very good luck. Albert and
Woody stayed several minutes and I wished
they would leave because we couldn’t catch a
ride with them there. Right after they left three
men stopped, we loaded the boat, got in and
they carried us west all the way to Highway
19 then north to the edge of the overflow.
While trying to start the motor the rope broke
and we had to paddle all the way across the
flooded country to near the intersection of
19 and 154, arriving home at 9:30. While
Jean was gone to Cooper to get Greg at her
folks’ house Rodney Morris called to say
Ron (Boom) Morris broke the state record
in the 100 meters with a 10.3 in Austin. Also
got first in the 200. Our 400 meter relay
team only got third due to a bad hand off.
Sunday, May 16, 1982. After church, Dean
Houchins, Chris Calvin, and I tried to check
my new net but the water was too deep and
swift. By Tuesday, water at the river had
fallen eight feet. Dean and I were able to
check my net and found twenty four fish that
weighed 118 pounds. Dean said that I was 36
and he was 31 and I never had learned him
anything until now. He couldn’t believe it,
especially since we had wasted all that time
over the years facing the open end of nets the
wrong way. He wanted out of the boat right
then and I asked why the rush. He said he
was getting to a phone as fast as possible and
order him a net. Going throw all his hooks
and lines away. We really laughed about that.
Now back to the present in 2010. There’s
been a lot of water under the bridge since
that 1982 flood. No pun intended. Beavers
chewed holes in our nets then netting became
illegal. At least when I get a craving to do
some netting I can go to Shreveport and ride
with commercial fisherman Robert Dupont.
There’s also a netting season in parts of Red
River which is less than an hour drive from
my house so I may give that a try this spring.
An old phrase when somebody has got the
world by the tail is to say, “They are sitting
in the catbird seat.” Well you know me; I
just couldn’t let that go without doing some
searching. As far as I can find, the catbird
likes to sit on a high perch and watch for its
next meal. It is in a favorable spot or position
for something good to happen. For example,
Red Barber announced the Dodgers games for
years and used that phrase when a batter had a
3-0 count. There sure are some strange sayings
on this old planet. Tom Madden used to puzzle
his players during the pregame pep talk when
he would finish with, “Don’t worry about
the horse being blind, just load the wagon.”
I’ll have to dig deeper to find about that one.
Regulus, part of Leo the Lion, and actually
a spring star, will be to the lower left
of the Moon the night of December 24.
Remember its location and notice how it is
moving slightly each night in order to be
in a more easily viewed position by spring.
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year
from Jean, me, and our dogs, Zack,
Pearl, River, T Garth, and Bad Eye.
Here’s a few more football sayings: I make
my practices real hard because if somebody is
going to quit I want them to quit in practice,
not in a game. Bear Bryant. There’s one
way to keep us from scoring, give us the
ball near the goal line. Matty Bell-SMU.
Lads, you’re not to miss a practice unless
your parents, or you, die. Frank Leahy -
Notre Dame. I never graduated from Iowa
but I was only there for two terms, Truman’s
and Eisenhower’s. Alex Karras-Iowa.
I could have been a Rhodes Scholar, except
for my grades. Duffy Daugherty-Michigan
State. Always remember, Goliath was a
forty point favorite. Shug Jordan-Auburn.
They cut us up like boarding house pie, and
that’s real small pieces. Darrell Royal-Texas.
They whupped us like a tied up goat. Spike
Dykes-Texas Tech. I asked Darrell Royal
why the Longhorns didn’t recruit me and
he said, Well, Walt, we took a look at you
and you weren’t any good. Walt Garrison-
Oklahoma State and Dallas Cowboys star.
