Varsity girls reach championship
game at N. Hopkins Tournament
By Chris Gall
Sportswriter
The Varsity Girls were invited to play at the North Hopkins
Tournament including nine other teams this past weekend.
In the first round of the tournament the Bulldogettes faced
off against Bland. It was a very close game throughout, the
Dogettes led by only 3 points at halftime. Heading into the
fourth quarter the Dogettes built up a six point lead. That
lead didn’t last long, Bland put up 18 points in the fourth
quarter but Cooper held off the late rally and barely escaped
37-39. Tate Anderson led the Dogettes with 10 points, Tiffany
Roberts 9, Chaney Speight 6, Jacey Ingram 6, Haley Lynch 4,
Leigh Tatum 4. The girls moved on into the second round and
faced off against the Chapel Hill Red Devils. The Dogettes
jumped out ahead with a huge lead in the first quarter 15-4.
The girls never looked back outscoring Chapel Hill 14-12 in
the second quarter and 10-8 in the third quarter. Chapel hill
however made a late run in the fourth quarter but it wasn’t
near enough, Dogettes won easily 47-38. Tiffany Roberts had
an outstanding game against Chapel Hill leading all scores
with 15 points along with 12 rebounds. Rami Shaffer 9 pts and
4 reb, Jacey Ingram 6, Leigh Tatum 6, Donika Reynolds 6,
Tate Anderson 3 pts and 7 rebs and 4 steals , Lanie Tatum 2
pts. The Dogettes moved on to the championship game where
they met up with the Tom Bean Tomcats. At the end of the
first quarter Cooper was looking good, leading 9-3. In the
second quarter both teams offense played well scoring a lot
of points. Tom Bean out scored the Dogettes 23-17 in the
second leaving the game tied at 26-26 heading into halftime.
In the third quarter the Cooper Dogettes came out flat and
Tom Bean took advantage, with momentum from the second
quarter the Tomcats outscored the Dogettes 17-5 in the third
quarter mounting a 43-31 lead. Tom Bean continued to
play well, finished out the fourth quarter taking the victory
53-39. Rami Shaffer led the Dogettes with 11 points, Leigh
Tatum 10 (l-3,3pt)2 steals and 3 assist, Tiffany Roberts 6
pts 7 rebs, Jacey Ingram 4 pts, Donika Reynolds 4 pts and 4
steal, Tate Anderson 2 pts and 8 rebs, Lanie Tatum 2 pts. The
Varsity Boys Basketball tema also competed in a few games
this past week. Their week started out well with a victory
over the Avery Bulldogs at home. The Bulldogs had control
throughout most of the game. Avery put together a pretty
good run in the middle of the third quarter taking the lead
but Cooper’s Marquette Reynolds knocked down a 3 while
getting fouled, hit the free throw completing the rare 4-point
play which seamed to jumpstart the Bulldogs offense to a 50-
38 victory. The Bulldogs then went on the place third in the
Rains Invitational Tournament over the weekend.
