Klondike News
_By John & Elizabeth Hopkins_
I don’t know about you,
but I am looking forward to
Chiggerfest this weekend.
There are always so many
things to do, things to see,
good music all around, and
lots of wonderful things to
eat. Mable Wheat said she
is going to be preparing for
Chiggerfest all week so there
will surely be plenty of ice
cream for cones or milkshakes
at the drug store. Last year
we missed seeing the white
tigers and are planning to
see them this year. I hope
the weather stays like it has
been and not get cold or rainy
for it. Maybe we’ll see you
there.
George and Pearl Foster had
Sunday lunch in Cooper with
Bill and Anna Crowhurst.
They also had dessert there
on Friday night — Bill had
made a homemade fresh
pear pie and Pearl said it was
delicious.
Jerry and Faye Robnett
report son David has re-
enlisted in the Marine Corps
for another four years. Along
with this David has been
promoted to Master Sergeant
so congratulations are in order
to him. Jerry and Faye helped
granddaughter Elizabeth
celebrate her 15th birthday
last week. Elizabeth had a
weekend camp out at the lake
with her friends (under the
supervision of Sharon and
David, of course!) and then
continued the celebration
until Thursday when Jerry
and Faye joined the family
for cake and ice cream.
Wanda Helms cooked
Sunday lunch for her family
— no birthdays, though.
Wanda said they have the
temporary power pole up for
Nash and Leah’s new house.
Hopefully, they can start the
dirt work next week. The
couple want to be in their new
house by Christmas — let’s all
pray that the weather holds
for that! Sarah and Wanda
went to Blossom last week.
They were helping Jacob
and Amber move from Mt.
Pleasant. Also, Nash killed a
doe while bow hunting. They
were processing it this week,
making it all ground meat for
chili and spaghetti sauce. (Do
you think they will invite us?
Nah, I guess not, since we
didn’t help with the work!)
Stella Martin said her
visitors this week were
granddaughter Cassie and
neighbor Tanner, who came
in for a game of dominoes.
Travis pops in and out
frequently and did so this
week as well.

We’re still having lovely
weather in the East End. It is
getting a little dry. We could
use a good rain.
Mike McKeever of Ovilla,
TX, a descendant of Littleton
Rattan, brought a group of
his cousins to Delta County
last week. They toured the
Hickory Grover Cemetery
and the Oaklawn Cemetery
in Cooper and other points
of interest. Doris Alley and
Shirley Smith went along
with them. Some of them
live as far away as Chicago
and Lubbock. Some of them
were from Austin. They
looked at Permelia A. Rattan
Blackwell’s marker in the
Oaklawn Cemetery. Permelia
was born March 6, 1831 and
died April 6, 1903. She was
married to Joel P. Blackwell.
They visited the marker of
Hiram Rattan in the Hickory
Grove Cemetery. Hiram was
buried in his yard in Rattan.
His marker was pushed down
and broken all to pieces. Doris
Alley pieced it back together
and placed it in the Hickory
Grove Cemetery. From the
cemeteries, they went to look
at the Blackwell houses in the
southeast part of Cooper.
Littleton Rattan came to
Texas from Illinois in 1839
with his father, Richard
Rattan, his uncle Thomas
Rattan, his brothers, sisters,
and cousins. He selected a
home site in Delta County
near his brothers, Larkin and
Hiram.
J. Michael McKeever
purchased the Historical
Marker that is located west
of Charleston for Littleton
Rattan in 2005. He brought
the group to Charleston to
view that marker.
There were lots of people at
the Farm Bureau banquet last
Tuesday. John Barker said the
blessing. We had a delicious
dinner catered by Rick
Murray’s Bar-b-cue. Curtis
Walker, the president of the
group, was the M.C. Edwin
Slough even told a joke. It was
a very good banquet. Lots of
people won prizes. We won a
delicious pecan pie that Lulu
Hill baked. Ronny and Marilyn
Thurman won the grand prize,
at.v.
Roy Lee and Delores
Jackson and their son John,
had a hayride for the Delta
County Red Hat Society
ladies Saturday afternoon
after Dolores had a delicious
sandwich luncheon for them.
Harley Davis, Jason Davis,
and Tom Ray are doing
the paperwork for Shiloh
Cemetery to get it listed
as a Historical Cemetery.
Doris Lee Alley is doing the
paperwork for Hickory Grove
Cemetery.
The Delta United Women
met Thursday evening at
the Enloe United Methodist
Fellowship Hall, the Rev.
Stacy Smith was in charge of
the program.
