The Cooper Independent
School District Board of
Trustees met on Monday
night to say good bye to out-
going trustees and to swear
in the newly elected board
members. Delta County Judge
Ted Carrington was on hand
to swear in Jeff Phifer to fill a
two-year unexpired term and
Jake Vaughn, Kregg Slakey,
and Jack Chambliss each to a
three year term.
The three out- going trustees
were recognized for their
service and dedication to the
board and presented a plaque.
Anita Moody was recognized
for her six years of service to
the board, Jeremy Anderson
was recognized for his eight
years and Shey Stegall was
recognized for his one year
of service but was not present
at the meeting to receive his
plaque.
The CISD Board of
Trustees reorganized and re-
elected Thomas Darden as
president, Jake Vaughn as vice
president and Blake Randle as
secretary. They also discussed
the regular meeting time and
date and they decided not to
change things and will keep
the third Monday of each
month at 6:00 p.m. as the
time for the regular school
board meeting.
Superintendent Jason
Marshall reported that P.J.
Knickerboker, PTO president,
said that the PTO will donate
$ 10,000to Cooper Elementary
to be used to purchase
playground equipment for
the new school. The trustees
had previously approved a
budget of $40,000 for the
playground and with the
addition of the PTO gift they
will be able to install brand
new equipment. The current
playground equipment is
welded into place and the
cost of moving the equipment
was prohibitive but there is
some equipment that will be
refurbished and moved.
The trustees also approved
a $156,835 proposal request
from Harrison, Walker and
Harper for various renovation
projects relating to water
damage at the Cooper Junior/
Senior High School to be done
during May and June. The
district will use remaining
contingency funds from
the new elementary school
project. Andrew Clark at
Powell and Leon, the district’s
lawyer, determined that the
voters approved the issuance
of bonds in November 2007
to construct, renovate and
equip schools within the
district. The renovations will
address issues with sidewalks,
windows, the roof and walls
relating to water drainage at
the secondary campus.
Treasures lost and found
By Amber Rylant
Staff Writer
“Look, I found a treasure!” Usually
when we hear these words from a child,
they have found something that looks
special and is a treasure to them but is
usually worth nothing to an adult or
parent. This was exactly what Teresa
Townsend thought when her 6-year-old
granddaughter, Jessica Swaim, brought
her a little metal object caked in dirt. The
item turned out to be a ring and not just
any ring but a 1932 Cooper High School
class ring.
“I thought it was going to be a child’s
toy, metal ring. I told Jessica that I would
wash it and she could wear it. As we were
scrubbing it with a toothbrush to see
what she dug up, I discovered she really
did find a treasure!” Townsend stated.
Jessica had forgone the video games
and cartoons the other kids had decided
on in order to spend the day outside. She
decided that she was going to dig for
treasure and began her mission with a
little plastic, toy shovel. After watching
her struggle with the hard ground a
bit, her grandmother suggested she dig
Jessica with the 1932 class ring she
found
somewhere where the ground was soft
and not underneath her swing, where
she always plays. Jesse refused, stating
that is where she liked to dig and before
long, she had created a small hole and
discovered her treasure.
Jesse says, “I was just digging and
digging and digging and then boom,
there it was.”
The ring is all gold with the year
1932 engraved on the side and Cooper
High engraved on the top, along with a
crest. The inside bears the letters BET.
The small ring could either be male or
female.
“We have tried to find the owner of
the ring but we cannot find anyone with
those initials in the Cooper 1932 year
book.” Townsend states. “I am sure
the family would like to have the ring
back.” Townsend has spent lots of time
at the library looking through yearbooks
at both the junior and senior class lists
trying to match the initials but has not
found any that match the initials. The
family’s goal is to find the rightful
owner and return the ring, but if they
cannot little Jessica plans on keeping her
treasure safe forever.

Correction
Last week in a story on the front page and in the Charleston
News the Cooper Review reported that Kevin Slakey was one
of the winners in the Cooper ISD school board election. Kevin
Slakey was not on the ballot and it was Kregg Slakey who was
elected to the school board. The Cooper Review apologizes
for the error.
