Charleston News
By Vicki Vasco
Everything is sure looking
good in the East End. The
grain that was planted just
before the rain is coming up
and growing. Everything is
green and lovely.
Gloria Kirkpatrick’s
graduation from the GED
Program at PJC was on
Tuesday evening the Ray
Karrer Theater Center. Gloria
had lots of family members
and lots of friends attending
that graduation exercise.
A nice crowd attended the
Delta County Historical
Commission meeting
Wednesday evening at the
Delta County Patterson
Memorial Museum. Dee
Akard Welbourn of Austin
was our guest speaker. She
is kin to the Akards from
Charleston. She gave a very
informative talk about family
history research. Betsy Mills
came to Delta County with her.
Betsy’s husband is kin to lots
of people from Charleston.
Betsy has done lots of family
history research. The next
meeting of the Historical
Commission will be Tuesday,
June 8 at the Clara Slough
Museum at Enloe. Richard
Duncan will show us around
the museum and talk with us.
The Museum Board met
Monday. A nice number
of members attended that
meeting.
Friday, May 14, the United
Daughters of the Confederacy
met at the Cozy Cappuccino
Restaurant in Paris for our
final meeting and luncheon of
the year.
June 1 is the deadline for the
pictures for the Delta County
Pictorial History Book. If you
have not taken your pictures
to the library to be scanned,
you need to get them before
June 1.
Birthdays: Kelly Ingram
and Bayle Worden 5/25;
Sydney Worden 5/28; and
Helen Anderson 5/27. Happy
birthday, folks!
Billy Watson and his dad
Donald went with the band
group from the Cooper School
to Six Flags Saturday.
Brazos Phillips and Jalie
Swaim went with a group
of students from Chisum
School to the Ranger game
Thursday.
Dylan Worden did great at
the Cooper Rodeo Saturday
evening, as did Baley Worden.
Little Trenton Jones almost
got bucked off a horse. Ty
Oliver got third place in Team
Roping.
Wednesday evening the youth
from East Delta Baptist and
the Charleston Methodist met
at the Methodist. The ladies
of the church served them
sandwiches and homemade
ice cream.
Jacie Phillips and Jacob
Vaughn sure did look nice
as they were going to the
Chisum Prom at the Heritage
Hall Saturday evening.
Billy Watson and Tommy
Shane Ingram were candle
lighters and ushers at the
Methodist Sunday. Shane
Ingram was the children’s
Sunday school teacher and
the Children’s Church leader.
Ronnie Morgan helped Gary
with the sermon by reading
the scripture, and leading the
singing and the responsive
reading. The choir sang a
beautiful song, “God Will
Take Care of You.” Eddie
Trapp’s daughter Sheila, her
husband, and her daughter
from Mt. Vernon were
visiting the Methodist Sunday
morning.
Have a good week!
USDA Rural Development
Seminar
CooperChamberofCommerce,
along with Cooper Home
Health, will be sponsoring a
USDA Rural Development
Seminar on Tuesday, May
25. A representative from the
United States Department of
Agriculture will be conducting
a presentation regarding
programs to help elderly and
low-income families improve
the quality of their current
home or obtain a home.
The United States Department
of Agriculture is dedicated to
helping improve the economy
and quality of life in rural areas.
The programs implemented
ensure rural Americans have
safe, well-built and affordable
homes. Two of the programs to
be presented on May 25 will be
the Section 504 Repair Loans
and Grant and the Section 502
Single Family Housing Loan
Program.
The Section 504 program is to
help low and very low-income
owner occupants repair or
modernize a home, make it
safer and more sanitary or
remove health and safety
hazards. The Section 504
loans have an interest rate of 1
percent with a maximum term

and over who cannot repay
a loan may be eligible for a

Another reminder of the
fundraiser barbecue on
Saturday May 29,2010 for and
at the West Delta Community
Center. Service will be from 5
to 9:00 pm. Jerry Currin will
be cooking his award winning
pulled pork and brisket. You
can have it as a dinner with
potato salad, beans, dessert
and drink or as a sandwich
with chips and a drink.
There will be a live band
there for your entertainment.
Tickets are available around
the community. And if
you haven’t seen the new
community center, this is a
great time to come. See you
there!
Nelma Dodd attended a
Women’s Retreat at her
church on Saturday. Twenty-
nine ladies met at the
Congregational Methodist
Church for a wonderful time
of renewal and refreshing.
(Nelma has been a life-long
member of this church and
her mother was a charter
member!)
Phillip and Allie Stone had
daughter-in-law Louise visit
on Sunday afternoon. Louise
also conducted a family Bible
study. Sharon Jordan has been
in and out all week, almost
daily. Later on Sunday, the
Stones went for a drive to
enjoy this great weather.
Cindy Anderson is still doing
special duty for the post office
and is spending her time going
to various posts. She and Gary
had all their grandchildren
(except one) spend the night
on Saturday and enjoyed
every one of them.
Patricia Blundell had Cassie
Gunn and Brionna visit on
Saturday. Patricia also heard
from all her children this
week.
Wanda Helms and her group
had another birthday to
celebrate on Sunday. Kacie is
no longer a teenager!! Friday
night the women of the Helms
family planned a “girl’s night
out” in Rockwall but Nash and
Jacob decided to accompany
them “for protection”! Yeah,
right!! Could it be that the girls
were going to Shenanigans
and the guys just couldn’t
resist being left behind?
Stella Martin said Dionna got
Braden Friday. Stella joined
them and everyone went to the
Dairy Queen for supper. They
also did some shopping at the
Dollar Store. Stella also went
to Lorene’s on Thursday and
they put together a puzzle.
Larry George and his friend
Misty went out to dinner and a
movie on Saturday. They saw
The Backup Plan. On Sunday
Shaver and Bayleigh came to
visit for a while.
Janet and Jerry Currin attended
a special birthday party over
the weekend. Grandson
Jordan turned three years old.
He had a big party complete
with bounce house and slide.
Jerry cooked a brisket for the
adults and Jordan’s dad made
hamburgers and hot dogs for
the younger ones.
John and I had a pleasant
outing on Sunday evening.
We went next door to our son’s
home for a cookout. Bill and
Betty also invited their friends

The Section 502 program
is primarily used to provide
low-income individuals or
families with an opportunity
to own their own home. Funds
may also be available to build,
repair, renovate or relocate a
home.
The seminar regarding the
programs will be held at the
F irst Baptist Church of Cooper
located at 500 East Dallas on
May 25 from 6:00 p.m. to

Herb Brookshire, Chamber
President, urges area residents
to attend. Brookshire states,
“As President of the Chamber
of Commerce, I want to
invite and encourage Delta
County residents to come and
participate in this program.
We don’t want to miss this

opportunity to learn more
about what is available to us.”
Melissa Millard, Community
Education Coordinator for
Cooper Home Health, also
asks that residents make
an effort to attend. “We
sponsored this program a year
ago and at least five Delta
County families have received
assistance from that effort.
Please join us on May 25th
to see if this program could
benefit you or someone you
care about.”

God Bless her!) Ray cooked

there were all the sides and
