Sara Jo Simmons
Sara Jo Simmons, 74, of
Cooper passed away Tuesday,
March 9th at Birchwood
Manor Nursing Home in
Cooper. Funeral services
were Tuesday, March 11th
at 2:00 p.m. at the Delta
Funeral Home with Johnny
Witherspoon officiating and
interment was in the Oaklawn
Cemetery.
Mrs. Simmons was born in
Delta County July 31, 1935.
She was the daughter of
Mancel James Mosley and
Lois Lillian Grider Mosley.
She was a homemaker, lived
in Cooper since 1994 and had
lived in Paris and Mesquite.
She was a member of the
First Baptist Church. She is
survived by husband Bobby
Simmons of Cooper, son Joe
Simmons and wife Peggy
Simmons of Rowlette, son
Steve Simmons of Cooper
and Grandson Tim Simmons
and wife Tracie Simmons.
She was preceded in death by
daughter Cynthia Lee Clardy
and her parents and brother
James Mosley.
Orleans, LA where they spent
their honeymoon. On the
way there they made a stop
at Ft. Polk, LA where Owen
was stationed in Fall 1961
till March 1962 as part of the
49th Armored Division and
in DeRidder, LA where they
lived. The Hootens currently
reside in Lake Highlands
of Dallas, TX in a home
designed by Owen and built
in 1963. Owen is an architect
who retired from HKS, Inc. in
1998. They are members of
East Dallas Christian Church
where both of their children
were married. Their daughter
Gwyn Beaird, son-in-law Bob
and grandchildren Austin and
Jacqueline live in Collierville,
TN. Their son Greg Hooten,
daughter-in-law Kathleen
and grandson Luke live In
Commerce, TX.

Maude Harpole Walker
Maude Harpole Walker passed
away peacefully on March 14,
2010 at the age of 97 in Mount
Pleasant, Tx. Funeral services
were held Wednesday, March
17th at 10:00 a.m. in the
Delta Funeral Home Chapel.
Interment was in the Garden
of Memories Cemetery in
Ben Franklin. Walker was
born in Grapevine, TX on
April 25,1912 to William
Ellis and Harriett Eller
(Akers) Harpole. Her family
moved to Roscoe where
she attended school. She
married Oren Erby Walker on
October 14, 1929 to become
a homemaker and wonderful
loving mother of two sons.
She also became a valuable
partner in the family farming
business. Farming began in
west Texas and eventually
ended in east Texas where
they settled. They farmed at
Roscoe, Cross Roads and Ben
Franklin. They bought a farm
in Pecan Gap where Walker
lived until 1974, at which time
she moved to Cooper Texas
after the death of her husband
Oren.
Walker led a rewarding life
and had many friends in Delta
County and the surrounding
areas. She was a member of
the Cross Roads Ladies Club
where she enjoyed quilting
and crocheting. She and
her husband participated in
square dancing for fun and
competition. Although she was
not a real cowgirl, supported
her husband in the Delta
Rodeo club. She loved shrubs
and flowers but was coerced
into vegetable gardening in
World War II. Her family
never went hungry.
In her later life her
grandchildren knew her as
a doting “Nannie” who was
the world’s greatest cook.
Walker’s sons would have
voted her “Mother of the
Century”.
She was preceded in death by
her parents, her husband Oren;
one son, O.E. Walker Jr.; two
brothers, Ernest and William
Harpole; and sisters Laura
Mae Henson, Irene Taylor and
Mary Whitney.
She is survived by a son
and daughter-in-laws: Bob
E. & Dolores Walker of
Mount Pleasant and Shirley
Walker of Cooper; one sister,
Betty McGuire of Covina,
California, ten grandchildren,
twenty-onegreatgrandchildren
and one great-grandchild.

at Lackland Airforce base in
San Antonio, TX. The airman
completed an intensive, eight-
week program that included
training in military discipline
and studies, Air Force core
values, physical fitness, and
basic warfare principles and
skills.
Airmen who complete basic
training earn four credits
toward an associate in applied
science degree through the
Community College of the
Air Force.
He earned distinction as an
honor graduate.

The airman is a 2000 graduate
of Cooper High School, and
earned a Master’s degree
in 2005 from Texas A&M

Those words seem so small for the appreciation I
have for your support and your votes that you gave
me on March 2n(* in the Republican Primary. I can
only say that I will work hard to ensure you never feel
like you wasted your vote on me. I look forward to
the run on November 2n^ and the general election. To
