Cooper Review - Page 3
Charleston News
By Vicki Vasco
We are still having
beautiful weather, but it sure is
cold today. Maybe the weather
will be warmer tomorrow.
The Delta County Red
Hat Society met Sunday
afternoon at Kay’s Korner.
We had a delicious meal and
very nice program. Quaniquia
Shanklin, a 17 year old junior
from Cooper High School,
sang two songs for the group,
“Because of You” and “Silver
and Gold.” Quaniquia is the
granddaughter of Bloyce and
Mary Shanklin of Cooper.
Mr. and Mrs. Shanklin were
guests at the meeting. Brenda
Habbard of Enloe presented
a program on the Red Hats
and their history. Then we
had the Red Hat ceremony
and recognition program, and
the crowning of the Pinkie
Princess and of the Radiant
Reds Vice Mother and the
recognition of all the members.
The Lamar-Delta Retired
Teachers met Monday, April
28 at the Paris Jr. College
Ballroom. Several from Delta
County attended the meeting.
Caleb, Cord, and Taylor
Ingram went with the East
Delta Baptist youth group to
the Lindale T imberland Church
Camp Friday and Saturday.
Jake Huie had surgery
Tuesday at the Mary Shield
Hospital in Dallas on the
shoulder he hurt last weekend
at the rodeo in Oklahoma.
Our candle lighters at
the Methodist Sunday were
Billy Watson and Cord
Ingram. They were ushers,
along with Collin Ingram.
The Chisum FFA
had a banquet Saturday
evening. I saw Mrs. Mac
Larkin of Brookston at that
banquet. Her son Billy of
San Antonio was with her.
He is the Editor of the Gulf
Coast Cattlemen Magazine.
I saw Gene and Barbara
Landers at that same banquet.
They went to see their
grandchildren win lots of
awards. Their grandson, Scott
Landers, was the 2007-08
Paris District FFA President.
Katie Malone and I went
to see Jacie Phillips win
some awards at that banquet.
Brazos won one award.

The old John Tarpley
house on the corner of East
Delta and Highway 895 is
there no more. Someone was
tearing it down, and finally a
match was set to it. That old
house had lots of historic value.
It came from Charleston. It
was the Leonard Oliver store
at one time. Then it was used
as the Post Office at one time;
Dannie Miller, her mother,
Mrs. Click and Dannie’s son
Sammy lived in it at one
time. Mrs. Grace Moody, her
daughter Grace Marie and her
son Jim Moody lived there
at one time a long time ago.
One day last week a man
from the Texas Historical
Commission of Austin was
in Delta County checking out
the East End cemeteries. I had
turned in papers on several
cemeteries in Delta County
trying to get them registered.
