On the Square
By Roger Palmer
Every year about this time the Delta
County Chamber holds the major event of the
year. Now, I’m not a Director at the Chamber
anymore but I for sure am going to be at the
Chamber Banquet this year. This is the one
event no one should miss. I always go just to
see what will come out of Herb Brookshire’s
mouth! He always says something that’ll
crack me up. Now, they’ll have a professional
magician there this year too. I’m waiting to
see who he’ll make disappear. From what I
hear the food will be something to write home
about. And deserts, I know that they will be
special too. You see the Chamber Directors
make the deserts and man, last year I had
two, when I went for my third desert Gracie
slapped my hand and told me I was finished.
She won’t do that to you. So, go for the deserts
alone! Well, I think you can see where this is
going, it’s always fun, and entertaining and
the food is always good. It’s really an event
that should not be missed. And here’s a hint to
all those politicians out there... .This is one to
be at. Heck, we’ll probably fill the tables with
everyone who’s running for office! So how
do you get tickets? Just call Gracie Young at
903-395-4314 or talk to any chamber director.
Gracie says she might even have some at the
door. But I wouldn’t wait! It’s this Saturday
and you don’t want to miss it!
Letter to the Editor
To The Editor
We want to thank the Cooper Review for
the nice front page article inviting people to
Christmas in the Park, in the Dec. 3rd. issue. It
mentioned attending and supporting the event
taking place Dec. 11th. and 12th. It is very
disappointing to have been a participant these
last two years and this newspaper has next to
nothing of pictures or an article telling how
beautiful Doctors Creek Park was and what a
great success of the many visitors that drove
through.
Mindy and her staff did a fine job in
preparing for this event, Friends of the Park,
First Baptist Church, Gracie Young and
many others who contributed their time and
effort, the Charleston news reporter-her nice
comments, we greatly appreciate all of you.
Campsite participants put a lot of time and
expense in trying to be creative to make this
little park a beautiful site for the season. Even
weathering the cold and rain, we had lots of
fun putting up our Manger with Nativity and
other seasonal decorations at our campsite.
The many compliments from people
driving through as well as the friendly walkers,
we appreciate you. Some we knew, some we
didn’t.
We both grew up in Delta County but now
live in Greenville. Doctors Creek is our favorite
park to camp and we always patronize the
restaurants and stores while there throughout
the year.
Christmas in the Park deserved more from
this newspaper. We believe the ones that drove
through, took the time to vote would like to
read in the Review if the ones they voted for
had won. A nice follow up story could bring
others out next Christmas.
After all, isn’t Delta County and the
surrounding area fortunate to have Doctors
Creek State Park?
Sincerely,
Jim and Dovena [JonesjWoodall

Thank you.
Editors Note: We agree, Christmas in the Park is one of our family 's favorite events in Delta
County during the Christmas Season. We also agree that the folks at the Park and everyone
who works on and supports the Friends of Doctors Creek do an excellent job. The Review has
always been supportive of Doctors Creek State Park, the Friends group and Christmas in the
Park. Where we don i agree however, is the amount of coverage the event receives each year.
In the December 18, 2008 edition, we did a front page story on Christmas in the Park. That
story included a photo and mentions you as the first place winner. There are a lot of events in
Delta County and we wish we could put them all on the front page. In the December 17, 2009
issue on page 9B, a quarter of a page was devoted to Christmas in the Park, and included six
pictures. We will admit that we dropped the ball and didn i list the winners for 2009 and we 'll
remedy that here and now. Congratulations to the three winners of the best decorated site
Jimmy Woodall 1st place, Steve Douglas 2nd place, and Shawn Murray 3rd place. I'm sure
you 'll agree that everyone who participated and the folks who attended are all winners.

NEW YEAR’S EVE HUNT
The day of New Year’s Eve, Kade
Kennemer, David Elmore, Mark Owen and I
carried some guys hog hunting and they had a
blast. All of them were related and it was their
first hog hunt. Israel Lewis and his two boys,
Caleb and Carter, from Sulphur Springs, Gabe
Moudy from Lubbock, John Mabry of Dallas,
Dr. David Lewis of Fort Worth, and Mike
Mabry of McKinney. After parking at Kensing
we walked down into the river bottom where
we saw lots of rooting in a hay meadow. Kade
brought Blackie and I brought Zack, T Garth,
River, and Chip (Cashatta’s grandson).
Near South Sulphur River we turned west
and soon I could hear barking from River, my
Catahoula from Denham Springs. Something
must be wrong because it doesn’t sound like
his “here’s a hog” bark. The other dogs rushed
to see what he had but soon came back. Must
not be a hog. Was it a skunk? As we got closer
I could see River had gone inside a big hog
trap. Kade has been trapping a lot of hogs in
it and River went in snooping around the hog
smell. Accidentally tripped the wire and the
door fell.
Moving on west we came to a thicket
that is usually productive. Light rain was
starting and we were a little cool. The woods
were long, narrow, and thick. Kade and I took
the dogs and started at the south end moving
north while everyone else walked parallel to
us out in the open pasture. About a third of the
way through I heard a dog barking toward the
north end. Kade was two hundred yards west
of me and we started to the bay.
A hundred yards from the dogs I saw a
red hog coming toward me. When it saw me
it hunkered down trying to hide like a quail
does sometimes. Mark was the only one of
the group with a gun and I hollered for him
to bring his 357 revolver. I was afraid the hog
would take off running but it just lay there
thirty yards away. Finally I realized Mark
couldn’t hear me so I ran on to the bay. The
dogs had caught by then and Kade was sitting
on the hog. I got T Garth back and tied him to
a small tree then held the hog while Kade tied
Blackie. The rest of the group arrived and one
of them pulled on Chip’s collar until he turned
the ear loose.
After all the dogs were tied, Israel used
my spear to harvest the hog. They were all
fired up, doing high fives and filming with their
little cameras. It didn’t take them long to say
they were hooked on hog hunting and planned
to make it an annual affair as they gather in for
their New Year’s family get together. David
had earlier gone after his pickup to haul us
back. We drug the hog out to the pickup and all
crowded into and onto David’s small Toyota.
Eleven guys, five dogs, and one hog. What a
sight. Israel, we’ll see yall next year.

was found buried in the cotton. Life had been

For hundreds of years one of the
mysteries of the world is why you never see
any dead penguins on the ice in Antarctica.
Finally the problem is solved. Biologists
recently observed a group of penguins use their
beaks to chip out a hole in ice, place a dead
penguin inside, cover him up, form a circle,
and sing, “Freeze a jolly good fellow.......”
Bet you didn’t even see that one coming did
