Deeds of Kindness
Booker T. Washington, American educator
and civil rights leader, said that excellence is
doing common things in uncommon ways.
Last year, upon hearing of my mother’s
death, two friends came for a short visit
and brought a bag of essential paper goods.
Several years ago when I was working late,
they brought a delicious meal when I least
expected it. Their uncommon way of doing
common deeds include offering a smile, a
hug and a prayer when they are needed most.
A person of excellence is known by their
deeds of kindness. The story of a young
widow, Ruth, is recorded in the Bible. She
was known as a woman of excellence (Ruth
3:12) as she provided for her mother-in-
law, Naomi, by working long hours picking
up grain throughout the harvest season.
According to Ephesians 2:10, Christ
followers are God’s creation, His masterpiece,
His poem, created in Christ Jesus for good
works which God prepared beforehand. Even
though we may not feel like a masterpiece
or a poem sometimes, notice the purpose
for which we were created. God created us
in Christ Jesus for a life of good deeds. God
prepared and planned these deeds long ago.
Studying the Bible prepares and
thoroughly equips the believer for every
good work (2 Tim. 3:16-17). Not only
does God prepare the good deeds, as we
study His word He prepares us to do them.
Jesus Christ taught His followers to let
your light shine before others that they may
see your good works and give God the glory or
make God look good (Matt. 5:16). The apostle
Peter wrote, “Keep your behavior excellent
among unbelievers so they may because of
your good deeds ... glorify God” (1 Pet. 2:12).
Imagine if we were all thoroughly equipped
to serve others with kindness. Imagine a
place where doing good deeds was the norm.
Imagine each of us doing common things in
uncommon ways to make God look good. I
can’t imagine a better place to live and work.
One more thought concerning deeds of
kindness: A special THANK YOU to everyone
who made the Delta County Christian Women’s
Luncheon featuring Corrie Ten Boom Live a
special event. Over 100 people from at least 10
churches and as far away as Houston received a
blessing of hope and inspiration. Special thanks
to the ladies of Cooper First United Methodist
Church, East Delta Baptist Church and
Cooper First Baptist Church for providing the
wonderful meal. Soloists Mariana Deatherage
and Kathy Witherspoon, One Voice ladies
ensemble lead by Judy Thompson, the FBC
Praise Team lead by Garrett McGraw, and
vocalists Kelsey, Jessica, and Katelyn Shetler
provided inspiring music. Tammy Anderson
of Cooper Florist, Kay win Conley of Kay’s
Korner, Ricky Elms, Charlie Steward, and
Gerald Teague generously donated their time
and talents. Thanks to Roger Palmer and the
Cooper Review for publicizing the event. Your
efforts blessed many others! May God richly
bless each of you for doing common things in
uncommon ways.
