The air on the Cooper
Square was filled with
music and the streets filled
with blue jeans, black
leather and chrome. Bikers
from Northeast Texas, and
as far away as Louisiana,
came for the First Annual
Rescue Run Bike Rally
hosted by the Cooper
Volunteer F ire Department.
It was a beautiful day as
the bikers from all over
began lining up at 9 a.m.
for the 100-mile ride while
volunteers and members
of the Ladies Auxiliary
set up concessions. The
Boy Scout Troop 41 led
the riders in the Pledge of
Allegiance before leading
them on a parade march
out of town. The scouts
went around the square
carrying the American
Flag, followed by the fire
truck and then the bikers.
Riders returned later that
afternoon for bike games,
raffles and lots of food.
Live music was played
by Mark Brandt and the
Hookers and spirits were
high as children danced in
the street and friends and
families gathered together
to eat great food, watch the
bike games and hope for a
winning raffle ticket.
Harold Watkins, an
organizer for the event,
said, “We have been doing
fundraisers for years but
wanted something new
and different for this area.
Bike rallies have been
successful in other areas so
we thought we would give
it a try and it is working
out.” Proceeds from the
fundraiser are going
towards the purchase of a
thermal imaging camera
for the fire department. The
special camera will allow
firemen to see hot spots in
buildings and houses and
help find victims in smoke
filled areas.
Several member of the
community volunteered
their time to make the rally
a success. Watkins said,
“Businesses in the area
have been very supportive.
We have had several
sponsors and donations.”
Some of the sponsors for
the rally were Greenville
Honda and Yamaha, Johns
Creek Lodge, Randall
Noe Ford-Commerce,
Commerce Chevrolet,
Paris Harley Davidson and
Kawasaki of Paris.
Watkins estimated
the rally had around
100 registered bikes and
he was happy with the
turnout. “We had a great
time, it was a beautiful day
and we did well for our
first rally. We are already
looking forward to next
year,” Watkins said.
Local streets were filled with motorcycles during the Rescue Run held last
Saturday in Cooper.
