Museum begins season
On April 10 the Delta County
Museum began its season of
opening on Saturdays. This
museum is in its 42nd year
of operation and the exhibits
reflect the “yesteryear” of
Delta County. A number of
the County’s citizens have
never visited the museum,
but those who have exclaim
over the variety of exhibits
and frequently find something

Jerry Powell Simpson, 66,
of Cooper, passed away
Thursday, April 8, 2010 in
Enloe.
Graveside services were
Monday, April 12, 2010, at
1:00 PM, at the Evergreen
Cemetery in Paris. Stacy
Smith officiated.
Mr. Simpson was born in
Cooper, Texas, December 1,
1943. He was the son of Jap
Simpson and Judy Pierce
Simpson. He was a Welder at
B & W and a Cattleman.
Survivors include: Sisters:
Anne Manning-Grapevine,
Carol Champion-Alien; Aunt:
Vay Gillean-Enloe; two nieces
and two nephews, seven great
nieces and nephews.
Peggy Jean Shelton
Sullivan
Peggy Jean Shelton Sullivan,
82, of Cooper, passed away
Wednesday, April 7, 2010 at
Hopkins County Memorial
Hospital in Sulphur Springs.
Funeral services were at 10:30
AM, Saturday, April 10th,
at the Delta Funeral Home
Chapel with LeRoy Reaves
officiating and interment
was in the City Cemetery in
Sulphur Springs.
Mrs. Sullivan was born in
Ladonia, Texas, April 28,
1927. She was the daughter
of Roscoe Shelton and Josie
Hulsey Shelton and was raised
by, Chot and Lela Hulsey.
She had lived in Cooper the
past 20 years and was an
apartment manager in Austin,
Texas before coming to
Cooper. She was a member
of the First United Methodist
Church in Cooper.
December 31, 1950 she
married Billy (Pete) Sullivan.
Survivors include: Husband:
Billy (Pete) Sullivan-Cooper;
Son: Billy Sullivan II-Austin;
Daughter: Sue Cregg-Sulphur
Springs; Grandchildren:
Wendy Bridges and Jeremy
Bridges, Sarah Cregg and
Bill Henderson; Two great-
grandchildren: Honesty
Bridges and Eric Bridges, and
several nephews.
She was preceded in death by
a brother, R.C. Shelton.
Pallbearers were: Audie
Apple, Bill Holder, Jeremy
Bridges, Bill Henderson, L. A.
Bridges, and Jearl Ham.
Orville Ray Fretwell
Orville Ray Fretwell of
Cooper died Sunday, April 11
at Birchwood Nursing Home
in Cooper.
Services were held at 2:00
pm Tuesday, April 13 at the
Cooper Church of Christ
with Noel Bailey officiating.
Burial was on Wednesday at
1:00 at Canton at the Tarver
Cemetery under the direction
of Delta Funeral Home.
He was born to Robert Carl
and Marietta Ballew Fretwell
on January 7,1935 in Canton.
He married Tina Fox in
Kaufman on November 7,
1964. He was a member of
the Church of Christ.
He served in the U.S.
Army from 1959-1961. He
graduated from East Texas
State University in 1967.
He worked for the Soil
Conservation Service in
Canton and Stephenville for
2 years then returned to live
in Kaufman and worked for
the City of Dallas Parks &
Recreation Department. In
1969 he began work with the
F armersHomeAdministration
and worked in Groesbeck,
Franklin, Nacogdoches and
Cooper where he served as
County Supervisor for 9
years. Following the closure
of Cooper Office he worked
in Paris and Sulphur Springs
until he retired in January
1999. He served on the
Cooper City Council for 2
years.
Survivors include his wife,
Tina Fretwell of Cooper;
daughter Lisa Hamm and
husband Preston of Lone Oak;
son Carl Fretwell of Cooper;
granddaughters Michelle,
Jennifer and Kaitlin Hamm
of Lone Oak; plus many
nephews and nieces who he
loved dearly.
He was preceded in death by
his parents Robert Carl and
Marietta Fretwell, sisters Lue
Ella Brewer and Audie Bell
Crawford and brother Robert
Lincoln Fretwell.
Pallbearers were: L.C.
Hill, William Holmes, Roy
Gregory, Jerry Holcomb,
James Mark Wolfe and David
Wolfe.
Vernon Louis “Goose”
Fisk
M
Vernon Louis “Goose” Fisk,
61 of Greenville, was taken
to his heavenly home and was
released from all pain and
suffering on Sunday, April 11,
2010 after a courageous battle
with cancer. He was born to
Elvin and Margaret Fisk on
May 21, 1948 in Commerce,
Texas.
“Goose” truly had a servant’s
heart. He proudly served our
country in the United States
Army during the Viet Nam
War. He spent his life serving
others and never put himself
before anyone. Anyone who
knew “Goose,” loved him
and knew that there was
never anything that he would
not and in most cases, could
not do for a friend. Whether
you met him at a rodeo, or
on a ranch, or a job, or even
passing by on a horse, you
knew after five minutes, that
this was a guy you hoped and
wanted to be friends with.
“Goose” touched lives every
single place he went. His
influence has changed lives
and wifi continue to do so for
many generations to come.
One of the last true Cowboys,
his passion in life was horses,
roping, rodeos and ranching.
He loved being outside and
worked hard to provide for
his family. As a young boy in
Ladonia, he was taken under
the wing of Robert West.
Mr. West loved Vernon and
he taught him everything he
knew about horses. Even at
a very young age, Mr. West
saw something in Vernon
and a great relationship was
formed. Because of Vernon’s
love of horses and the bond
between two friends, “Goose”
knew everything there was to
know about horses.
“Goose” graduated from
Fannindel High School in
1966 in Ladonia. He was
drafted in the Army in 1968,
deployed to the Viet Nam
War in 1969, serving in the
101st Airborne Division, and
receiving the Bronze Star.
His military service ended in
1970.
“Goose” had various jobs
through the years but
found his calling in ranch
management. In the following
years he managed several
ranches with his last position
at the Lone Star Ranch in Mt.
Vernon owned by Bing and
Jan Graffunder.
Vernon’s pastime was enjoyed
by participating in rodeo and
roping events. Vernon loved
the Lord and attended the
Cross Power Church.
His devotion and love to
his family was unmatched.
He loved spending time
with them, especially his
grandchildren.
“Goose” wifi continue to
be loved and missed for
generations to come and his
legacy, reputation and honor
to his fellow man wifi live on
forever.
He is survived by his loving
wife, Donalda Fisk of
Greenville; his son, Andrew
Fisk and his wife, Tiffany of
Honey Grove; his daughter,
Amanda Evans and her
husband, Joseph of Cumby;
his step-son, Michael Senter
of Greenville; his loving
mother, Margaret Fisk of
Greenville; his brother and
sister-in-law, Elvin “JR” and
Ramona Fisk of Tioga; his
sister and brother-in-law,
Catherine and Bill Parks of
Tyler; 4 grandsons, Kyle
Senter, Ashton Neeley, Alex
Fisk and Jay den Evans; 2
brother-in-laws, Donald
Cowan and his wife, Sandra
of Forney, Richard Cowan
of Longview; nephews, Brad
Shotts and his wife, Amy of
Mansfield, David Fisk and
his wife, Carol of Wolfe City,
Kevin Fisk and his wife, Sha
of Greenville; a niece, Kelli
Shotts of Mesquite; other
family members and a host
of loving and supportive
friends.
“Goose” was preceded in
death by his father, Elvin
Fisk; and his brother-in-law,
Dolphus Shotts.
Services to celebrate
“Goose’s” life wifi be held at
2:00 p.m. Wednesday, April
14, 2010 at the First Baptist
Church of Ladonia with
Rev. Sam Bush officiating.
Interment will follow at the
Ladonia Cemetery with full
Military Honors under the
direction of Delta Funeral
Home, Ladonia.
Visitation for family and
friends wifi be held from 6:00
to 8:00 p.m. Tuesday, April
13, 2010 at the Delta Funeral
Home, Ladonia, Texas.
If desired, memorials may be
made to the American Cancer
Society, P. O. Box 560089,
Dallas, Texas 75356.

who are not familiar with the
county but marvel at the huge
collection of artifacts.

counties have museums, and
we need to keep ours alive!
