Charleston News
_By Vicki Vasco_
The weather in the East End is still
lovely, even though it is very cold.
Claudel and Maurice (Potts) Malone
of Whitewright observed their
60th Wedding Anniversary at the
Baptist Church in Whitewright
Sunday afternoon. Katie Malone,
her daughters Lyn and Julie and
their families went to Whitewright
to that event. DeeAnn and her son
Dawson went ice-skating with his
school. Maurice is from Kensing
and Claudel is from Taylortown.
Everyone around us is
getting ready for Christmas.
The Dickens Christmas Teas Saturday
afternoon was lovely. The Town &
Country Garden Club ladies in their
period costumes were beautiful. The
food was delicious, from the scones
to the tea, and the music was great.
The Cooper lighted Christmas
Parade Saturday evening was
beautiful. There were several floats,
and antique cars and tractors, two
motorcycles and horses. Don’t
forget Charleston’s Christmas
Parade this Saturday, starting at 11
o’clock at the County Barn and going
to East Delta Community Center.
The stew/chili supper after the
parade was delicious. Lots of
people attended that event. It
was a fund raiser for the library.
Birthdays: Wesley Dean Houchins

Ryan Woodard, Kendra Richey,
Ty Oliver 12/7; Yours Truly
12/9; Gloria Kirkpatrick 12/11;
and Brother Eugene Adams

Casey Williams was the candle
lighter at the Methodist Sunday and
also one of the ushers. The other
ushers were Hanna Huie and Journi
Ingram. Danny Pickering was the
Worship Leader, and he and Jennie
helped Gary with the Communion.
Sandra Morgan had the Children’s
sermon. She talked about what
God wants for Christmas. Our
choir sang a beautiful song, “Love
Devine, All Love Excelling.”
The RSYP had their Holiday
Celebration luncheon Thursday at the
F irstBaptistChurchinCooper. Regina
Story and Shirley Smith received
their five-year pins. Pat Waters
and Shirley Smith were honored
for being on the board of directors.
The Delta United Methodist Women
met at Enloe at the lovely home
of Carol McChesnee Thursday
evening for their annual Christmas
Celebration. Lyn Alley read a
beautiful Christmas Story, “Christmas
at the Filling Station.” Debbie
Cavanaugh catered the delicious
meal. Everyone had a wonderful time.
Shirley Smith attended a very
good play, “Thoroughly Modern
Millie,” at the North Lamar High
School Friday evening. She saw
others from Delta County there,
Louis & Carol Anderson and their
daughter, Michelle, and others.
Amy Preas got a 13-point buck early
Sunday morning. She brought it
to church with her, and everyone
had to go out and look at it.
Have a good week!
Klondike News
To paraphrase an old song, “It’s beginning to feel a
lot like Christmas”. The temperature keeps dropping
and chilly winds blowing make me think of years
past doing Christmas shopping. Since I worked,
I had to do it after work hours or on weekends and it
always seemed to be cold and windy, making it hard
to get the packages into the car. But all was repaid on
Christmas morning when smiles lit happy little faces.
Janet and Jerry Currin got a head start on the Christmas
spirit this weekend when they had a “date” with grandson
Jordan. They went to see the Charlie Brown Ice Sculpture
exhibit at the Gaylord Texas in Grapevine. Janet said
the whole thing was awesome, with even the light posts,
fences, trees and Snoopy’s dog house carved from ice -
- not to mention all the Charlie Brown characters! The
temperature was 9 degrees inside the tent and the parkas
that were provided were MOST welcome! (The exhibit
is open through Christmas if you want to go.) The inside
of the hotel was gorgeous inside, beautifully decorated
into a Christmas wonderland. The atrium featured lots of
trees and there was even an ice slide for “children”. After
touring the hotel, everyone went to downtown Grapevine
for all the sights and a wonderful light show choreographed
to seasonal music. Enjoying the trip with Jerry and
Janet were Jordan, Rodney, Heather, Rodney’s sister
Michelle and their friends Brian, Natasha, and Madison.
The Stones were busy this weekend with lots of
visitors. Daughter Sharon visited on Sunday as did
daughter-in-law Louise who led the family Bible
study. Son Glen was in the house on Saturday.
Jerry and Faye Robnett attended the Christmas parade
in Cooper on Saturday night. Their daughter and son-
in-law Sharon and David won the Grand Marshall’s
Prize for their parade entry! Congratulations!! After
the parade, everyone went to the Chili and Stew supper
at the Civic Center to benefit the Delta County Library.
Mable Wheat also went to the Chili and Stew Supper,
but she went early to miss the after-parade crowd!
On Sunday she started her Christmas cooking
by making her very first batch of peanut brittle.
Stella Martin said she was surprised when she saw a
hog in her yard. Fortunately, it wasn’t a wild one, just
one that belonged at a neighbor’s and had escaped
his pen. He was quickly caught and re-penned.
Stella and Patricia did some shopping on Saturday.
Tina Rainey told me that her home is on the
Christmas Tour of Homes. Let’s all go see it!!
Larry George had his children for the weekend.
They were mostly hanging out at home
because of the weather. Bayleigh’s friend Eaton
stayed overnight as did Travis’ friend Tyler.
Patricia Blundell attended a baby shower for Sabrina
Blundell on Sunday afternoon. Patricia made a “diaper
cake” for the event. Patricia heard from all her children
this weekend. And, she called her granddaughter Sarah to
sing “Happy Birthday”. Sarah turned 12 on Sunday. To
celebrate, Sarah was able to order her favorites for dinner.
She chose tacos, green beans and raw mushrooms! (To
each his own, I guess. I would have had meatloaf, mashed
potatoes, and corn. What would you have chosen?)
