Meal-A-Day moves to Civic Center
By Kimberly Palmer
Staff Writer
Thursday, April 2, was the big day for
Meal-A-Day to move into their new home
at the Delta County Civic Center. Lots
of workers and volunteers were on hand
to facilitate moving the equipment and
supplies across the parking lot and setting it
up inside the dinning room and kitchen area
of the civic center.
Meal-A-Day had been in their former
home for at least 20 years according to
Debbie Foy. The structure is very old and in
disrepair and there are plans to demolish the
building since repairs would be too costly.
Foy is the nutrition coordinator for NETO
and she said that not only will the move be
great for the senior citizens, “I think this
move will really enhance the community.”
The civic center site is much more
accessible for the elderly and handicapped
since it is on street level with paved
sidewalks whereas at the former center, a
wooden ramp had to be used to walk up into
the old building. She also said that the civic
center is a great place to be until they are
able to move into the old elementary school
in approximately two years when the new
elementary school will be completed.
With fresh paint and a newly tiled and
waxed floor, Foy and Pam Derr, one of the
new civic center managers, were getting
tables and supplies organized and hanging
artwork in the dinning area preparing for the
first meal to be served on Monday.
Derr said that this is a “win-win situation
for everyone because someone will be using
the civic center every day. It is what we
have wanted for the civic center which was
to be available to everyone for use.”
Both ladies would like to see the seniors
participating in activities like dominos,
puzzles or perhaps a quilting circle at the
center since there is plenty of room for
all types of events now. The civic center
dining area will still be available for rental
on weekends and the gym area is always
available since it is not used by the group.
Workers included Meal-A-Day staff
Ernie Krawczyk, Regina White, Kay
Heath and Tony Alexander; Delta County
Commissioners Wayne Poole and Rip
Templeton; Daymon Cunningham, Jerry and
Pam Derr, and many other hard working
volunteers.
Foy wanted to make sure that everyone
knows that “NETO really appreciates those
who came out today to help in the move,
I did not know who was going to show up
and it’s been wonderful.”
