Cooper ISP trustees tackle fall agenda
CISD joins Make Education
a Priority Initiative
Kimberly Palmer
Staff Writer
The Cooper Independent School District
Board of Trustees faced a full agenda when
they met on October 25 for their regularly
scheduled meeting. CISD Trustees adopted
the Make Education a Priority initiative,
Monday night joining over 182 Texas school
districts in support of gaining the attention of
legislators for the 2011 legislative session to
consider education funding a priority and to
protect the pursuit of quality education for all
children.
Superintendent Jason Marshall gave the
trustees a report on enrollment and said that
as of that night, the district had 411 students
enrolled at the elementary campus and 420 at
the secondary campus. He also said that the
Meal-A-Day program has agreed to use the
old elementary cafeteria and he expected a
lease to be signed with an estimated start date
of December 1. The program will pay a small
rental agreement amount and be responsible
for the utilities, daily clean-up and to carry
their own liability insurance. The district will
continue to maintain the building.
Assistant Superintendent Denicia
Hohenberger reported to the trustees on a
variety of compliance reports and performance
reviews in which the district received positive
results. The trustees approved the 2010-2011
District and Campus plans as presented by
Hohenberger.
Doug Wicks, principal at Cooper
Elementary, reported that there had been a
successful flu shot clinic and a mobile dental
unit on the campus. He also reported that
the UIL elementary students will travel to
Griffis Elementary School in Caddo Mills on
December 3rc* to compete.
Chris Kiser, Cooper Junior/Senior High
School principal, reported that they just
completed the TAKS retesting and on
November 19 they are planning a mock TAKS
to help prepare students for the actual tests
that will be held in the spring. He reported that
the junior high will compete at UIL in Melissa
this year on December 10. Kiser said that nine
more smart white boards had been installed
and that the teachers really like using the
equipment. This leaves the secondary campus
with only two classrooms that do not have the
boards.
The trustees approved the board planning
calendar with the addition of campus tours
to be added for the spring and fall. They also
approved a reduction in insurance coverage
for the district since the current coverage
would not replace various buildings due to
age, saving the district approximately $8,000
per year.
A discussion was held regarding the state
of the facilities in the district. Marshall
reported to the trustees that the track repair
should begin on November 15 and that there
would be a track color change to black due
to fading and spotting. He also reported that
he is working with the person who won the
bid on the portable buildings for removal.
Discussion was also held regarding the district
holding an auction to sell off old furniture and
equipment.

November 11, 2010 in observance of
Veteran’s Day.
November 11 became a legal holiday
in 1938 when it was originally known
as “Armistice Day.” Armistice Day was
set aside to honor the veterans of WWI.
In 1954, after WWII, the Act of 1938
was amended striking out Armistice
and replacing it with Veterans. With
the approval of legislation November
11 became a day to honor all American
Veterans of all wars.
In 1968, the Uniform Holiday Bill
was passed ensuring that four of the
national holidays be observed on
Mondays to insure a three-day weekend.
Those holidays included: Washington’s
Birthday, Memorial Day, Veteran’s Day
and Columbus Day.
Later in 1975, President Gerald R.
Ford signed a Public Law returning
the observance of Veteran’s Day to
November 11. The date change took
place in 1978.
Veteran’s Day continues to be
observed on November 11 regardless of
which day of the week it falls on. It is a
time to celebrate and honor all American
Veterans for their willingness to serve,
their sacrifice, the love for their country,
and their patriotism.
