Commissioners question G.R. Wood
Sheriff under the gun
Delta County Sheriff
G.R. Wood and his office
were under attack during the
October 14th Commissioners
Court meeting.
Delta County Treasurer
Phyllis London went before
Commissioners to ask for
action relating to an internal
audit being conducted by
her office. London told the
commissioners that she
had sent three letters to the
sheriff’s office requesting
records for a forfeiture
account and a commissary
account that is managed by
the sheriff’s office. Sheriff
Wood said during court that
the accounts were inmate
money and not county money,
and not eligible for the audit.
The sheriff was also
questioned regarding thirteen
tickets that were not presented
to the Justice of the Peace.
Commissioner Rip Templeton
questioned Sheriff Wood
and was told that a deputy
had not turned in a ticket
book. Commissioner Mark
Brantley also questioned
Justice of the Peace L.W.
“Bud” Skinner regarding
how many outstanding tickets
there were but was unable to
get an answer.
In other business, the
commissioners approved
tax collection contracts
with the City of Cooper and
Cooper ISD. Each entity had
requested a yearly renewal.
Two resolutions were also
approved. One for Indigent
Defense Discretionary
Grant Program and the
other resolution proclaims
November as Home Care and
Hospice Month.
Commissioners also
approved a proposal to issue
credit cards to all county
elected officials to pay for
travel and training expenses.
All election judges
were also appointed by the
Commissioners. The judges
wifi perform their duties
during the general election in
November.
Precinct 3 Commissioner
Wayne Poole also requested
permission to advertise for
sealed bids to sell several
pieces of equipment no longer
in use by the precinct.
Delta County jail
found in compliance
The Delta County Jail was inspected by
Fred St. Amant with the Texas Commission
on Jail Standards on September 29, 2008
and the jail was found to be in compliance
with the minimum jail standards of the Texas
Commission on Jail Standards.
Adan Munoz, Jr., Executive Director
for the commission said, “I also extend
my congratulations to the Delta County
Commissioners’ Court for their support of jail
operations.”
Last year during the regular inspection,
the jail was found not in compliance due to
the fact that at the time, the jail did not have
two jailer/dispatchers present at all times.
The commissioners immediately rectified the
situation by voting to add an additional jailer/
dispatcher position.
Visit to the firehouse
Sparky the Firepup greeted several Headstart classrooms last week. Sparky and the Cooper
Volunteer Fire Fighters usually go to the schools, but Headstart got to visit the firehouse.

man arrested for
possession of child
pornography
After nearly a two-month
investigation, a 28 year old
Klondike man was arrested
for possession of child
pornography andpossessionof
child pornography with intent
to promote child pornography.
The man was arrested at
his home in Klondike after
the Sheriff’s Department
received an anonymous tip in
August that the man was in
possession of such material.
The penalty is enhanced to a
second-degree felony when
an individual is found to be
in possession of more than
six images. The hard drive
containing the material was
seized from the residence in
August and its contents were
sent to the National Center
for Missing and Exploited
Children in Virginia. The
case progressed when that
agency returned a report
stating that more than one of
the photographs submitted
were positively identified
as a child under the age of
eighteen. A complaint was
issued by District Attorney,
Martin Braddy and an arrest
warrant was issued for the
mans arrest. He was arrested
by Investigator Michael
McAda, accompanied by
Deputies Josh Richardson
and Don Howell without any
further incident.
