Bye week for the ‘Dogs,
but junior highs set to play
Going into the district race
with a 3-0 record, the varsity,
jayvee, and freshmen football
teams are taking the week off
from an opposing team, but there
will be plenty of time this week
to mend, and prepare for the dis-
trict opener against Academy on
Friday, Sept. 28.
“This is the bye week for
most schools,” Coach Tim
Seward stated, “and it comes at
a great time. We can concentrate
this week on our grades, getting
healthy, resting our kids and pre-
paring for Academy. I believe
Academy will be 2-1 coming
into the game. They beat us 7-6
last year and we wound up not
making the playoffs. This is a
very big game for us. It will be
our homecoming. During home-
coming week, you don’t want the
kid’s minds to be off our goal and
that is to record our first district
win.”
Coach Seward reported that
the Bulldog Jayvees are 3-0 this
year; even though he pointed out
they coaching staff has moved a
few players from the Jayvee team
up to the varsity. “Even without
those players, the Jayvees con-
tinue to perform well.”
McGregor’s Junior high
teams are not off this week and
will travel to Moody on Thurs-
day for the 7th grade game at 5
p.m. followed by the 8th grade
at 6:30 p.m. “The junior high
teams will start district play
next week against Academy and
will follow the varsity schedule
the rest of the way,” Coach Tim
Seward reported.
Coach Seward wanted to
remind football fans early that
there would be a black light pep
rally next Wednesday, Sept. 26,
at the high school gymnasium
starting at 7:30 p.m. Everyone
is invited. For the homecoming
game next week, Coach Seward
pointed out that many exes will
be coming back and there will be
the crowning of the homecoming
queen during halftime.
Reflecting on other sports,
the head coach reported that Mc-
Gregor’s volleyball team is 2-0
in district and the cross country
team just completed the Mc-
Gregor cross country meet at
Mother Neff State Park where
more than 600 runners competed
and more than 600 spectators
came to watch.
Looking back at last week’s
win over Reicher, Coach Seward
commented, ‘This is the first
time for McGregor to be 3-0
going into district since 2008
against some quality teams.
The teams we beat are winning
games. Goldthwaite, Moody and
Reicher are all quality football
teams. We thought the Bull-
dog defense had its best game
at stopping the run and coming
up with turnovers. G. C. Davis
and Martin Chaires came up with
two interceptions and Brett Boles
knocked the ball free on Reich-
er’s opening drive of the third
quarter. Dylan Brown played
outstanding on both sides of the
football.”
“We are averaging 46 points
a game and that is a direct reflec-
tion with our quarterback leading
the offense,” the head coach said.
‘Troy finds way to get you with
his quick feet or his passing arm.
Jorian Chansler had a great game
in special teams in his first week
back from an injury. Our kicker
Renee Torres leads the district in
kicking with 17 points this year
in extra points. He is 17 of 20
in extra points and is also kicking
off well.”
Commenting on some long
runs during the game, the coach
said, “Uriel Frias broke for a
great 63-yard touchdown run
when we caught the Cougars in
a stunt. He did a good job of fol-
lowing good blocking up front.
C. J. Sim’s long run was sprung
with a great block from Scott
Tucker. Sims made an outstand-
ing move and jetted it to the side.
Marcus Irons run for a touch-
down was an outstanding indi-
vidual effort. Coming around
on a speed sweep, he saw they
were overloaded to that side, so
he planted and cut it inside. We
consider all of them to be play
makers.”
The coach reported that
Reicher put as many in the box
as they could sometimes having
10 up front to put heavy pressure
on your backfield. He thought
at times the Bulldogs were able
to take advantage of it. “We
do have a way of coming back
to those plays we see open,” he
stated. “We misfired a few times,
but for the most part our kids got
off their blocks and made big
plays. Martin Chaires had his
best game of the season so far
with five catches for 119 yards.
He drew single coverage when
Reicher doubled on Marcus
Irons, scored a touchdown and
had an interception on defense.”
“Tei Dixon McDaniel defi-
nitely brings a lot to the table as
a 5’9”, 245-pound fullback,” the
coach said. “Fullbacks are nor-
mally used as blocking backs,
but Tei has always been a skilled
player. He has the strength of a
lineman, but has really quick feet
and is low to the ground. He also
does a good job of taking care of
the football. He is fun to coach
and it was fun to see the excite-
Bulldogs charge through run out of tunnel to start the game. Photo by Michael Mooney
