Seeds of Love,
Pearls of Wisdom
by Pastor Sammy Haynes, Church of the Living God
Ephesians 6: 1. Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this
is right. 2. “Honor your father and mother “which is the first com-
mandment with a promise 3. “that it may go well with you and that
you may enjoy long life on the earth.”4. Fathers, do not exasperate
your children; instead, bring them up in the training and instruction
of the Lord.
The other day I asked a man, can he visualize his kids in hell.
He adamantly said; NO! I then asked him did he teach his Children
about Jesus, again he said: NO! Even though he loved his children,
he was not showing the true love of God. If we do not teach our
children about the Lord, it could be an open invitation for sin to take
hold of their lives and send them straight to Hell. As parents it is our
job to plant the seed of the gospel in our children. Parents are com-
manded to train (teach) their children whom they have been blessed
to have contact with, about a risen Savior, and it is the responsibility
of the Children to obey and learn.
The problem in today’s society is the children are out of order.
They are rebellious and hard to reach, because the foundation of wis-
dom was not laid in their lives. Most of the time it appears that the
adults are afraid, not interested, or just simply don’t even care about
trying to correct children. Please do not allow this to continue, it
takes a community to raise a child.
The Lord God expects the young and old to obey His command-
ments, however, many are not doing so; instead they are allowing the
children to be disobedient and unruly. The main direction that God
gives to young people is to honor and obey their parents. He made a

promise to them that if they were to do this their days on this Earth
will be long. Just in case you were wondering, God does not break
his promises!
So parents get back to the basics of life by teaching Godly prin-
ciples from the Word of God. Also, be the best example for the chil-
dren to follow and in so doing you will sow seeds of love by using
pearls of wisdom.
Jellybeans

Acts 9:36 LB. “Now there was at Joppa [a woman], a disciple
named Dorcas. She was abounding in good deeds and acts of char-
ity.”
As often as the Talley clan gathered at Aunt Ruby’s white frame
house on Tyler Street, my young niece said those family reunions
smelled like jellybeans. Personally, I never recall my aunt serving up
such a panoply of colorful, many-fiavored sweets in her little glass
candy dish. Or did she?
Aunt Ruby Ledbetter. Everybody’s fourth-grade teacher. And
everybody’s friend. The one whose memory brings smiles to the fac-
es of hardware clerks, grocery-store personnel, and countless class-
room proteges, now public schoolteachers themselves. What’s the
secret that made this lady one of McGregor’s most-respected men-
tors—and hostess for those needing warm love and scrumptious apple
muffins? I can recount a few answers from firsthand experience.
Like those jellybeans that kids sniffed inside the front door, though,
this sampling is as varied and delightful as a festive bag overflowing
with Christmas candies.
First, the rigors of Aunt Ruby’s daily schedule weren’t always
easy. But like that widow in Mark 12 who gave an offering to oth-
ers from her personal need, my aunt consistently drew deeply from
a Reservoir which Isaiah called “the wells of salvation” (See ch. 12).
Abiding faith in Jesus her Savior and His peace that passed under-
standing, intertwined with joyous intimacy called worship, supplied
unfathomable strength for hospitality.
As a child I remember seeing strangers at Uncle Robert and
Aunt Ruby’s dinner table during holiday seasons. And because they

were always welcomed as family, there were times when I couldn’t
tell the difference. Making these solitary souls feel at home, enjoying
laughter that healed their brokenness like a good medicine, was a gift
that could not be bought, sold, or traded. Even as a youth I closely
watched Aunt Ruby’s “hostessing” and wondered if but a portion of
her mantle might fall on me someday. . . .
Needless to say, I do cherish those lingering scenes of our Tyler
Street evenings during the 1950s and the lessons my aunt imparted
by example. Yet there is another resonating picture I value more
than anything. Aunt Ruby’s greetings—as well as her goodbyes—
were always the same, and wrapped in passionate hugs that last for a
lifetime: “God love you!”

I once met a man who had every reason to be bitter. His daugh-
ter had died in an automobile accident due to a drunk driver. His
wife had died of cancer. He lost his job. He had a number of health
problems.
This man looked at the world around him and asked: “Where
is God in the midst of all of this suffering?” He looked at what had
happened on 9-11. He looked at “natural disasters.” He looked at
examples of hate, greed and dishonesty all around him.
He concluded by telling me, “I have real issues with my faith. I
really wonder if there is a God.”
“My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?” said Jesus
from the cross.
Here was someone that had every reason to be bitter. His closest
followers had abandoned him. He never married. He faced a lot of
criticism from others about the way he went about doing things. The
authorities wanted him killed.
What a mess.
.. .and yet God was in the midst of it all.
Blessings, Pastor Walter
