The McGregor Bulldogs
scored first and scored often
enroute to a big 48-13 victory
over the Reicher Cougars on
their natural turf there last Fri-
day night in the final non-district
game for both schools.
McGregor exploded for 14
points in the first quarter, added
7 in the second quarter, 20 in the
third quarter, and 7 more in the
fourth period. Reicher scored 7
points in the second quarter and
6 in the third quarter. The Bull-
dogs took the momentum into
the dressing room at halftime by
scoring their third touchdown
of the evening with only 35.3
seconds left on the clock. That
put them up 21-7 at the halfway
point. A 20-point performance
in the third quarter gave the Bull-
dogs a commanding 41-13 lead
going into the final period.
The victory gives the Bull-
dogs a 3-0 record going into this
week’s bye week. Stay tuned
because the district race is going
to start soon on Sept. 28 against
Academy.
Travis Mooney fielded the
opening kickoff for McGregor
and made an excellent return to
the 50-yard line. Quarterback
Troy Allison and running back
C. J. Sims helped moved the
first down chains on the first se-
ries to the Cougar 39. Marcus
Irons took the handoff and raced
39-yards for the first score. Extra
point kick by Renee Torres and
high and true and the Bulldogs
led 7-0 with 10:53 remaining in
the first quarter.
Reicher picked up a first
down on their initial possession,
but were forced to punt on 4th and
12 from their own 34. The punt
rolled dead deep into McGregor
territory on the eight-yard line. A
pass from Allison to Irons on the
first play was good for 17-yards
and a Bulldog first down. Al-
lison picked up 12 yards on the
next play and the Bulldogs were
rolling. Three plays later, Uriel
Frias took the handoff, bounced
to the outside and sped 63 yards
to the end zone. Extra point boot
was on the mark and McGregor
led 14-0 with 5:56 left in the first
quarter.
McGregor’s defensive unit
stiffened once again, the Reicher
was forced to punt the ball after
advancing it past the midfield
stripe. Again, starting deep in
their own territory on the 11, the
Bulldogs marched the length of
the field on a 17-yard pass from
Allison to Mooney, a 27-yard
sprint by C. J. Sims, and a 10-
yard pass to Irons to the Cou-
gar 10-yard line. Kicker Renee
Torres attempted a 21-yard field
goal, but it barely missed and the
score remained 14-0.
Reicher took over on their
own 20 where Quarterback Payne
Sullins threw a short 3-yard pass
on the first play. He kept the ball
and scrambled for 11 yards on
the next play for a Cougar first
down. On a third and 4 call, Sul-
lins connected with Alex O’Neill
on 60-yard touchdown pass over
the middle. Extra point kick was
good and the score read in favor
of the Bulldogs 14-7 with 8:56
left in the second quarter.
McGregor’s next scoring
drive started off in explosive
fashion with Allison hitting Mar-
tin Chaires on a 39-yard pass to
the Reicher 25. Two plays later,
C. J. Sims followed his blocks
for a good 11-yard gain and the
Bulldogs had another first down
on the Cougar 12-yard line. On
the third play, Allison threw
an 8-yard pass to Irons for the
touchdown. Extra point kick
split the uprights and the Bull-
dogs increased their lead to 21-7
with 35.3 second left in the first
half.
Reicher came out strong in
the third quarter on big 36-yard
and 16-yard pass plays from Sul-
lins to O’Neill and to Jeremy
Sheehy. With the football spot-
ted at the McGregor 13, the ball
was stripped by Brett Boles, and
recovered by the Bulldogs. Mix-
ing the run and the pass, Allison
connected with Chaires on a 21-
yard pass play, and Frias scam-
pered for 46-yards to the Cougar
12. Three plays later, Allison
found daylight and dashed into
the end zone from 14-yards out.
Kick was good the Bulldogs
were in the lead 28-7 with 6:37
left in third quarter.
The Cougars weren’t about
to give up, and proved that point
by throwing a halfback pass that
resulted in a 43-yard gain to the
McGregor 25. A pass from Sul-
lins to Andrew Kaluza for 17
yards closed the distance to the 8.
Two plays later, Sullins sprinted
into the end zone from four yards
out. Extra point attempt struck
the crossbar and bounced back.
The scored was now 28-13 with
6:03 left in the third quarter.
McGregor quickly answered
the challenge with a 57-yard
drive in just three plays. Chaires
hauled in a 46-yard Allison pass
for the score. Extra point kick by
Torres was accurate and the Bull-
dogs led 35-13 with 4:54 remain-
ing in the third quarter.
G. C. Davis alertly stepped
in front of a Cougar pass on their
next series and made a nice re-
turn to the Reicher 28. An 18-
yard pass from Allison to Irons
spotted the ball on the 10. Mc-
Gregor’s strong fullback Tei Dix-
on McDaniel picked up the next
four yards and then a pass inter-
ference call moved the ball half
the distance to the goal on the
two. McDaniel took the handoff
and powered his way over from
the two for the score. Kick was
no good, but McGregor held a
commanding 41-13 lead with
2:34 left in the third period.
McGregor’s mighty defense
stopped Reicher on downs on
their next series and took over
on their own 36. Not being able
to move the ball this time, they
punted it back to their oppo-
nent. Three plays later, Chaires
stepped in front of a Sullin’s pass
and it was McGregor’s ball once
again. Final score for the Bull-
dogs came on an 8-yard run by
McDaniel as he broke a couple of
tackles and sprinted into the end
zone. Kick was good and the
score read 48-13 with 6:33 left in
the contest.
McGregor earned the ball
36 times for 283 yards rushing.
Leading rusher was Uriel Frias
with 102 yards on seven carries.
C. J. Sims also had a good night
with 67 yards on 11 carries. Troy
Allison rushed 12 times for 55
yards. Allison also had a good
night passing by completing 11
of 24 passes for 195 yards. On
the receiving end of those passes
were Martin Chaires, five recep-
tions for 119 yards and a touch-
down; Marcus Irons caught four
for 53 yards, and Mooney made
a 17-yard reception. Offense for
the Bulldogs totaled 478 yards.
McGregor moved the first down
chains 21 times.
Reicher had 350 yards of
total offense, including 31 rush-
es for 116 yards, and 234 yards
through the airways. Sullins was
15 of 27 passes for 191 yards and
the halfback threw one pass for
a 43-yard completion. Reicher
had 16 first downs; one fumble
and two pass interceptions.
Bulldog Jayvees
defeat Reicher 38-0
The McGregor junior var-
sity football team defeated Waco
Reicher by a score of 38-0 last
Thursday at Bulldog Stadium.
McGregor opened the scor-
ing in the first quarter when Jor-
dan Najera intercepted a pass
and returned it for a touchdown.
Hunter January followed that
score with a six yard T.D. run and
Jonathan Martinez converted the
extra point.
“January completed two
touchdown passes after that, one
of thirty-seven yards to Bryant
Phillips and another of eighteen
yards to Jesus Suarez,” Coach
Gene Griffin stated. “Kyle Ja-
cobs completed the scoring with
two touchdown runs, one of
thirty-six yards and another of
seven. The offensive line gave a
dominant effort featuring Taylor
Robinson and Sydney Domin-
guez.”
Stanton Mosley led an out-
standing defensive effort with
five tackles for loss. Also play-
ing well on defense were Phil-
lips, Patrick Hoven, and Cory
Bowers. January had an inter-
ception return of forty-six yards.
The win gave the Bulldogs their
third shutout in three games.
Lady Bulldogs improve
to 2-0 in district race
The McGregor Lady Bull-
dog volleyball team came out
strong against Clifton recently
winning in three games by scores
of 25-11,25-10, and 25-14.
Coach Allison Reynolds re-
ported that Kayleigh Ripley had
18 digs, Taylor Norwood had 16
digs, Heather Bess and Hailey
Reineke had 9 and 7 kills, Finley
had three blocks, Ripley record-
ed 8 aces, while Norwood served
5 aces. Reineke was tops in as-
sists with 14, followed closely by
Bess with 10.
“The Lady ‘Dogs came out
fighting against Clifton,” a proud
coach stated. “The girls are
working hard at reaching their
personal and team goals. One
team goal is to leave everything
on the court when they step off
and that is exactly what they did
tonight. The girls are preparing
for each match like it was their
last game. We were very pleased
how the girls played as a team.”
McGregor’s Jayvee girls 1
team won in two games 25-15
and 25-23. T. Lee led in digs, A.
Rose led in blocks, Leah Bates
led in kills, and Yeager led in
aces. McGregor’s Jayvee girls 2
