LAY.OF THE LEVELLER.
B7 JUB.RT C0BNWALL.
'The king he reigns on a throne or gold
Fenced round by his right divine;
The baron he sits in his castle old.
Dricking his ripe red wine ;
15 ut below below in his ragged coat
The beggar he tunelh a hungry note
And the spinner is bound to his weary thread
And the debtor lie down with an aching head.
So the world goes
So the stream flows ;
Yet there's a fellow whom Jlobady knows
Who makeih all free
On the land and sea
And maketh the rich like the poor to flee.
The lady lies down in her warm white lawn
Anil dreams other painted pride;
The milk-maid sings to the wild-eyed dawn
Sad irmf-ton the cold hill's- side ;
And the bishop smiles as on high he sits
On the scholar who writes and stares by fits
And the girl who her nightly needle plies
Looks out for the source oflife and dies.
So the world goes.
So the stream flows;
Yet there's a fellow whom nobody knows
Who m.ikcth all free.
By land and sea
And forceth the rich and the poor to flee."
SONG.'
BV THE LATE THOMAS HOOD.
O ! ladv leave thy silken thread
And flowry taprstry :
There's living roses on the bush
And blossoms on the tree.
Stoop where thou wilt thy careless hand
Some random.bud will meet;
Thou can'st not tread but thou wilt find
The daisy at thy feet.
'Tislikc the birth day of the world
When earth was born iu bloom ;
The light it made of many dves
The air it all perfume ;
There's ciimson buds and white and blue
The rcry rainboir hovrs
Hnvc turned to blossoms where they fell
And sown the earth with flowei.
There's fairy tulips in the cast
The garden of the sun;
The very streams reflect the hues.
And blotsumtas they run ;
While morn opea like a crimson rose
Still wet with pearly showers;
Then lady leave the silken thread
Thou twinest into flowers:
This very beanliful song wis published by
the late Thomas Hood with a non de juerrwhen
he was not known to literature.
Extent of the Oregon Temtory On the
ea.t it ikiris 800 miles along; the Rocky
Mountains on the south 3BQ miles along the
Snowy Mountains on the west 700 miles a.
long the Pacific Ocean on the north 250
miles along ihe North American possessions
of Russia and England. This valley con-
tains 360 thousand square miles capable
undoubtedly ol forming seven States as large
-.-.... iumui luoiaies oitneaimensions
of Massachusetts. Some of the Islands on
the coast are rery large sufficient to form
a State by themselves. These are situated
north or the parallell ol 48. Vancouver's
Island 260 miles in length and 50 in breadth
contains 12000 square miles an area larger
than Massachusetts and Connecticut. Qutfn
Charlotte or rather Washington Island too
150 milee in length and 30 in breadth con-
tains 4000 square miies. On both of these
immense Islands though they lie between
the high parallels of 48 and 54 degrees -the
soil is said to be well adapted to agricultute.
The straits and circumjacent waters abound
in fish ofthe finest quality. Coal of good
quality and other veins of minerals have
been found.-rlLondon Globe.
TriE Conscrii'tiox. Shortly before the
battle of Lcipzic the empress in her charac-
ter of regent had demanded a levy of 250
000 conscripts for the service ofthe State j
hen came a call lor 30000 intended special-
ly for the defence of the Pyrenees threaten-
ed by the advance of Lord Wellington's ar-
my ; and now came Napoleon himself with
an additional demand for 300000 more; six
hundred thousand men called for and gran-
ted in less than two months and eleven hun-
dred thousand since the year 181 1 ! Histo-
ry had no example of such charnel-house
calls on the blood ofa people.
Enormous Steamboats. Some paper
has taken the trouble to collect some facts in
relation to the enormous steamboats already
built or now building at New York. They
are indeed of stupendous dimensions. The
Oregon ncprly ready is 310 feet long and
measures over 1000 tons burden. The Hen-
drick Hudson finished is 340 feet Iongand
measures 1200 tons She is fifteen feel Ion
gcr than the Great Britain and is to rub up
the Hudson. She will carry as many as the
whole population of some of our towns. A
nameless steamboat is also on the stock there
i
that will measure 200 tons mor than the
Hudson and 400 more than the Oregon say
1400 tons. She will carry 2500 passengers
aud if on the Mississippi would freight 6000
bales "of coUon.' She will cost when comple
ted $140000. New York is taking the lead
to the construction of large steamers.
