Cancer Society Board
Of Directors Meets
Trojanettes To Compete At Region
The Archer Unit Board of Directors
of the American Cancer Society met
April 18. Ten members and one pro-
spective member, Judge Paul Wylie,
were present.
President Jimmy Horany reported
regarding prospective members. Inter-
ested persons are welcome as members
and we especially need to get more
men involved. Peggy Sullivan gave
the treasurer's report including a report
on memorials made to the Cancer So-
ciety during the past month; Glenda
Martin reported on the number of
cancer patients being helped in Archer
County and the dollar value of these
services. The society maintains sup-
plies and equipment for cancer pa-
tients, as well as providing informa-
tion and counseling. Betty Pease
reported on the number of people in
Texas who would go without vital ser-
vices in one day if there were no Amer-
ican Cancer Society. It was reported
that the Great American Food Fight
had been postponed. Michelle Green,
Community Crusade chairperson, re-
ported on the "Send a Mouse to Col-
lege" program presented in the local
school and received preliminary re-
ports on progress of the crusade in
Archer County. We are well on our
way to our goal of $9,520 for this
year. Staff member Linda Lee reported
on "Making Strides Against Cancer",
a move-along-athon to be held in
Wichita Falls on May 18. Applica-
tions and sponsor's forms can be
picked up at the Archer County News,
the First State Bank and the Court-
house Lobby. We were reminded that
there is no connection between the
American Cancer Society and the Can-
cer Fund of America, which has been
soliciting in this area.
The next meeting will be held in
the Community Room at the First
State Bank, May 16 at 5:30 p.m.
Three Windthorst Trojanettes will
compete in the Regional Track and
Field Meet April 25 and 26.

Clarks Celebrate 50th Anniversary
Wayne and Ruby Clark of Graham
will be honored with a reception
Saturday, May 11, from 2 p.m. to 5
p.m. at the Megargel High School in
the Home Economics Building in cele-
bration of their 50th Wedding Anni-
versary. Relatives and friends are all
welcome.
Hosts and hostesses will be the
couple's children, Dale and Wenvea
Clark of Dallas, Johnny and Barbara
Geis of Archer City and Rhonda Aylor
of Graham.
Wayne Clark and Ruby Walker were
married May 15, 1942 in Gilliland.
They moved to Megargel in 1945 and
lived there for 35 years. They moved
to Graham in 1980.
Wayne retired from Megargel
Drilling Company.
They have nine grandchildren and
three great-grandchildren.
The robins should have their young
out of the before long, as far as I can tell
there are just two in the nest. A baby
bird was found after the wind storm
last week and it probably came out of
that nest. The young woodpeckers
should be just about ready to leave
their nest also. I finally got a glimpse
of the other male hummer, it are a male
ruby-throat. So I know there is a pair
of black-chinned and a pair of ruby-
throats. I'm still trying to watch when
they leave the feeders and yard to see
if I can tell where they may be building
their nests. Lois Haigood reported half
a dozen yellow-headed blackbirds at
her feeder Sunday afternoon. I saw a
western kingbird last Friday.
Honey bees are really busy on the
flowers. But there aren't as many but-
terflies as there were earlier. If you get
a chance get out and see and smell the
beautiful iris gardens around town,
they are a delight to visit.
The martins are beginning to lay
eggs and others are still building. More
martins are still showing up in several
locations around town. We may have a
decent showing after all.
Isn't it great that McDonalds and
their 8,500 nationwide restaurants,
which creates an estimated 2 million
pounds of trash a day, has finally real-
ized just how much of their trash can
actually be reduced, reused, recycled
or composted. They estimate that 80%
of their on-premises solid waste can be
diverted.
They were "somewhere between
surprised and shocked" when they
realized this, after a plan in collabora-
tion with the Environmental Defense
fund was put to the test.
