tants but for intemperance and libertinism.
The most continu iusIv fertile country I have
ever seen lies bctss-ecn Missouri and the
mountains though in a great measure desti-

coal and good water can hosves cr be had by

quently ass-ait further instruction from the
gos ernment of Texas. Under the sanction
or mere permission of the general gos ern-
ment there will be no difficulty in organizing.
The credit of Texas is rising rapidly. In
fact all the attempts to organize territorial
gos ernmcuts here base uecn made by men
desitiii" to establish fame for thcinselscs and
base invariably proved abortions except
hosseser Gen. Kearny's and that ssas a

Wc aie reluctant to belies e that the gov
ernment of Gen. Kearney has been estab-
lished and continued to this time ssith the
- design on the part of the Gos eminent of the
U if. of setting the authority ol this State at
defiance. We beliese President Polk ex-
plained his object to be not to dispute the
light of jurisdiction by this State but simply
to establish some gos ernment in that remote
'part of our State temporarily and only until
'this State should take the necessary steps to
organize and assert its authority. This sse
.beliese ss-as the general understanding of the
people of Texas at the time Gen. Kearney's
government ssas established. But if as it
would nosv seem this gos eminent is going to
be continued in defiance of our State author-
ities and upon the ground that sve have no
right to the territory up to the Rio Grande
as asserted by our lasvs since 1S3G if this is
to be the inference from our acquiescence
in General Kearney's gos ernment then it is
high time that sve should acquiesce no longer
and that the claims of Texas should be asser-
ted toy our executive in terms not to be mis-
'unce'rstood." There has certainly been a
mysterious silence to say the least of it on
this importaut question. If the territorial
rights of this State are to be disputed by the
General Government then the people of this
State ought to knosv it. We understand that
our Gos-crnor has repeatedly asked for infor
mation as to the real intention of the Gen
eral goveVn-.nent at Washington louching
Kearney's gos ernment and has as ycl re-
ceived no ansss-er svhatever. There is a uni-
versal anxiety felt on this subject among the
people of Texas and this anxiety is increas-
ing daily in its intensity. On other questions
our citizens may differ in opinion and feeling
but on this there is no difference.
A letter from Judge Baird dated 10th De-
cember lust addressed to W. D. Miller
Secretary ot State to which reference is made
" in the first extract above is accompanied by
a petition to this State Government for per-
mission to svork the Salines belosv Santa Fe.
The petition is signed by some dozen persons
wJio are snoken of by Judge Baird as among
the most respectable and wealthy people of
that country. Among tliem is iir. lucmees
formerly Governor of Nesv Mexico. The
Salt Lakes or Salines are belosv Santa Fe
and between the Rio Grande and Puerco.
There tiro a number of small Salines but
tsvo only are spoken of as great magnitude.
They are in the heart of the Apache country
the Apaches being a hostile and vrarlikc
tribe. These Salines are nosv supplying and
