When I reached my own vessel I carried
Iiim into-my cabin and attempted to lay him
in a berth. Hut he would not release his
hold around my neck and I desisted from
the attempt for a short time. It was with
great difficulty that I forced a little rice broth
down his throat lie turned his face quick-
ly away and his grasp tightened about my
neck. At lengtli'l succeeded in getting him
to lie down. But his eves were fixed steadi-
ly upon mc and whenever I attempted to
leave the cabin which I scleral times did a
low gui"ling sound would issue from his
throat atid he would stictch his arms ap-
pcalinglv towards me. His hands feet and

him in warm water and endeavor to lestorc
the circulation of the blood but when 1 turn-
ed in at night and took him in my arms
thcic was no change. The contact of his
body chilled me. He placed hia little face
on my bosom and lay as still as though he
were asleep but his cvts were wide open
and seemed fixed and motionless.
I fell asleep and was wakened after two
or three hours by a inoeincnt of the little
siiflbicr. He raised himself heavily and
made no cffint to speak. When I was fully
aroused I discocred the change which had
taken place in a few hours. The boy was
now in a raging fccr and his hcait and

It was a poor return for the eminent servi-
ces renaered hy Commodore Porter to the
tomirrercial world in the suppression ofpira-
cV in tho West Indian seasto be recalled

and fount! guilty the finding approved by
the President and the sentence sustained a
aentence which induced that h'gh spirited of-
ficer to throw up his commission and quit a
service on which his bravery and skill had
shed so much Inst re.
ThenYcrils which led to this result have
fnAed from the public remembrance and it is
not worth while to recall them now. It is
enough to establish the fame of Comniodoic
Porter to shV that after three years of unre-
mitting effort he succeeding in clearing
those seas of the ruffianly freebooters who in-
fested them.
I sailed from Matanzas on a lovely after-
noon in the latter pail of September 1S32
in the cutter biig Alinira bound to New-
York. I had little fears of the clipping craft
I commanded falling into the hands of a pi-
rate although I took the precaution to arm
her with a six-pounder mukets pistols and
cutlasses enough to make a icspectablc de-
fence We heard while lying in Matanzas
of the atrocities of the villains who in tact
Were indirectly protected nol only by mer
chants residing in Havana but uy mc coio
nial jrovernment itself.
A fine steady wind pushed us along at a
ten knot rate through the night and at day
light the next morning I judged wc had made
some ninety miles.
While I was getting my breakfast the
second mate thrust his head down the com-
panion way and told mc that there was a
buspicious looking craft in sight.
"A pirate Mr. Ncvins?" I asked.
"I "Well sir I should think nol though pi-
rates may have- just been aboard her. She's
h mcrchant-int.n and is sailing wild. De-
fiend upon it there's been foul work there.''
I went on deck and scanned the stranger.
Her fore-topsail was set but the rest of her
canvass was not to be seen tnougu t couiu
make out every spar. She was pitching
heavily at the bow and appeared to be la-
boring although the sea was by no means
rough.
Mr. Denny my first mate after a long
look gave it as his opinion that the bloody
Bcoundrels had been at vvoik on her deck
and thinking so myself I gave orders to run
down to her.
Mr. Octmy was a prudent man nndrthou't
Xvc lied better give the vessel a wide berth.
-Why o:" I asked.
"Whv sir we are close into one of their
infernaf hiding places. Depend upon it that
vessel was taken by boats."
"Well and what then?"
"The rascals may be aboard of her still.
We can't see all round the vessel; they and
their boats mav be there and out of sight.
I don't understand that fore-topsail."
"We'll be caulious.Mr. Denny" I replied
"this breeze and that si-v-poundcr will take
care of us."
In two hours wc were within hailing dis-
tance of the stiange craft and became satis-
fied that our first suspicions vvete correct.
Not a soul was to be seen on the deck which
was covered with the sails which had been
cut from the spars and allowed to fall.
Much of the standing rigging had also been
cut and the vessel scuttled.
"You will not bourd her?" Mr. Denny
sked turning to me with an "arncst look.
' But I will though" I replied "there is
no danger now.
In less than twenty minutes I sprung up
her side followed by six resolute fellows.
The mainsail (the vessel was a large schoon-
er eastern built.) entirely covered the old
fashioned quarter deck. I told the men to
drag it down so iliat I could get to the cabin
gangway. The men obeyed and dragged
the sail slowly off but oh! too rapidly for tiie
spectacle revealed to my shrinking eyes.
There lay oa that deck the mangled and
bloody bodies of six men the blood still run-
ning from the ghastly wounds still warm
and smoking!
The fiends must have perpetrated their
horrible work just at the break of day. It
was not until we had cleared the deck of the
canvass that the full extent of the butchery
was developed. Lying across the forecas-
tle hatch were two bodies and near the fore-
mast another that of a negro probably the
cook making nine in all. The ill-lated
crew did not die without a struggle wea-
pons were scattered in every direction and
the confusion on ihc deck showed that a des-
perate resistance had been made.
As I said before the vessel had been scut-
tled and was settling fast. On entering the
cabin I found the water already over the
floor and floating round were several female
garments: wc made a hasty search but
could not find the body or a woman. The
pirates had undoubtedly carried them off.
Mr. Denny who was hanging over the
quarter of the Almira now hailed me
"I think sir you had better leave her sh's
pitching sharp forward and will go down
before you know it."
It was in vain that I attempted to learn the
vessel's name. Her stern and bow were un-
lettered and her quarter rail where her
name undoubtedly was had been cut away
by the pirates.
I had just given the order to return when
one of the men with an exclamation oi sur-
prise sprung forward.
"What's the matter my man ?" I asked
following him up.
"I saw sir. the face of a child raised be
tween those two bodies" he replied pointing
to the corpses which lay across the forecas-
tle hatch.
In lesa than a minute I had dragged the
bodies away and jumped into the forecastle;
the water above my knees. For a moment
I could not make anything out and the men' thur C. Edwards Lcs'cr. II. T. Tackerman John
