most felicitous speech of the kind jtt on re-

tained zreat notoriety an'ong numerous other
thinirs. for bullying witnesses on the oppo
sites of cases where he is concerned. As
it would not be nolite to cive the full name
right out we will merely call him "Wycke"
for shoit
There was a horse case a very common
case upon our magistrate's docket trying
before Esq. Shrclbaker one day in which
"Wycke happened to be "fernenst" the horse.
A alow nnd easy witness had been called to
the stand by the plaintifT who in a straight
forward manner made the other side of the
case look rather blue. The plaintiffs attor-
ney being through Wvcke commenced a
regular cross-examination which was cut
hort in the following manner:
"Well what do you know about a horse?
you a horst-doctorl" said the barbarian in
"his peculiar contemptuous and overbearing
manner.
"Mo I don't pretend to be ajiorse doctor
hut I know a nood deal about the natur of
the beast."
"That means to say you know a horse
from a jackass when you see them" said
Wvcke in the stnie style looking knowing-
ly at the Court and glancing triumphant!-
oround the crowd of spectators with a tele-
graphic expression which said "Now I've
got him on the hip."
Tie intended victim gazing intently at his
lepal tormentor drawled out
'Oh yc-as-jes so I'd never iaJce you for
a horse!"
