LADY LIONS SOFTBALL
Eagle baseball:
looking back
and forward
The 2014 Crowley High
School varsity baseball sea-
son comes to an end. The
team’s
hard work
and devel-
o p m e n t
earned a
full season
record of
16-15 and
a district
record of
9-5. Their
district ef-
fort delivered a second-place
finish and a playoff berth.
The 2014 varsity team was
a young team. The infield saw
three juniors and a sopho-
more as regular starters, and
outfield positions were filled
by a sophomore and fresh-
man. Seniors held pitching,
catching and outfield roles.
On the season, head coach
Albert Carrizales was proud
of the production from his
seniors, and excited by the
development and leadership
displayed by the underclass-
men.
“The team earned a lot of
experience this season that will
carry over to next year," he said.
Coach Carrizales described
how the team development be-
gan in the early season games.
He and assistant coach Doug
Danser used the early season
tournament games success-
fully to identify skill strengths
and weaknesses.
“We worked early on to
eliminate fielding errors and
improve production at the
plate. The players put in the
work and got better each week,"
he said, adding he also saw the
team come together. “They
worked together. They encour-
aged each other. It is one of the
most cohesive teams I’ve seen
in my coaching career."
In the games prior to dis-
trict play, the team began to
hit the ball well. This, plus
solid fielding, held through to
the end of district play. Coach
Carrizales also described the
competitiveness of the team.
“They took losses hard.
The team thought they should
win every game and did ev-
erything they could to win un-
til the last out," he said.
The coaches are proud of
the season and look to the 2015
season with much optimism.
Coach Carrizales explained
how each player on the team
will develop over the off-season
playing summer ball.
“Summer baseball pro-
vides important repetitions
the players need to develop
and meet their personal
baseball goals. I encourage
each player in my program
to play summer ball. The top
performers in the district get
those repetitions. The experi-
ence pays off,” he said.
The season was a success.
The Crowley Eagles upheld
the winning tradition of the
program. In the new district
aligned for 2015, CHS will
field a team of experienced
and skilled players against
some strong competition.

Lady Lions win TCAF title game
The Nazarene Christian Academy Lady Lions display the championship trophy.
By KYP SHILLAM

Capping off an extraordinary un-
defeated season, the Lady Lions of
Nazarene Christian Academy deci-
sively downed the Lady Blacksmiths
of Westlake Academy 13-0 in the
TCAF State Championship game last
week in Springtown.
Firing on all cylinders, the Lady
Lions swung for the fences and it
paid off. Scoring five runs in the first
inning, they made their statement
loud and clear. This would be their
year.
The Lady Blacksmiths, over-
whelmed from the get-go, put the
bat on the ball six times, but the Lady
Lions defense would not be denied.
They closed the ranks, threw down
the bases and kept the Lady Black-
smiths from logging a hit.
Sophomore Morgan Davis and
junior Mikayla Shonamon fanned 10
batters while Davis gave up the sole
walk to blank the Lady Blacksmith
offense.
Taking advantage of wild pitching
by the Westlake staff, NCA earned 10
walks and three batters hit by pitch
for 13 free bases.
At the plate, senior Madison
Kemp launched an RBI double and
a single to pace the Lady Lions.

Heads-up base running was the key to the
Lady Lions victory over Westlake Acad-
emy to clinch the TCAF state softball title.
Adding singles to the win were Hai-
ley Rusnak, Delaney Schmidt and
Shonamon. Logging RBIs were Da-
vis, Kemp, MacKenzie Owens, Anna
Hubbard, Gracie Gray, Schmidt and
Shonamon.
Loaded with underclassmen, the
Lady Lions should be a force to be
reckoned with in 2015 as only Kemp
and Hubbard will be graduating this
year.
NCA 15,
St. Paul’s Prep 9 -
Three innings were all it took for the
Lady Lions to down St. Paul’s Prep
of Arlington in the TCAF semifinal
matchup last Monday.
Scoring five runs in each inning,
Nazarene Christian earned those
runs the hard way as St. Paul’s pitch-
ing staff gave up only two freebies,
one by walk and one hit by pitch.
Kemp went 3-3 at the plate with a
triple and two singles for three RBIs.
Hubbard and Gray clubbed dou-
bles, while Jen Black, Davis, Kaitie
Schmidt, sister Delaney Schmidt and
Shonamon drilled singles.
In the circle, Davis and Shona-
mon teamed up to strike out seven
and walk none, with Shonamon giv-
ing up the sole hit in the drubbing.

Four-peat out of Lions reach

The runs kept coming as Lions catcher Caelan Rodricks just misses the tag at home.

There will be no four-peat at Naza-
rene Christian Academy.
Facing the Westlake Academy
Blacksmiths in the TCAF State Cham-
pionship game last week for the fourth
year in a row, the Blacksmiths found
the fourth time to be the proverbial
charm. Not willing to take home sec-
ond place, Westlake dominated Naza-
rene Christian 7-1 in Springtown.
Lions freshman Ethan Lincecum
started on the mound, but quick-
ly found the Blacksmiths had his
number. Giving up two hits and five
runs, three of them earned, the frosh
walked six and struck out only two in
the first inning and a half.
Luke Tate provided relief in the
second inning. The sophomore kept
the Lions in the game over the next
five innings. He gave up two runs, one
of them earned, fanned six batters and
walked four to give the Lions a chance.
However, it was a chance left un-
taken at the plate.
Unable to read Westlake’s pitch-
ers, one Lion batter after another
went down swinging. Sixteen NCA
batters in all were fanned by Black-
smiths pitching and no hits were

logged on the game.
Four Lions earned their way onto
base by walk. Only Daniel Flynn was
able to work his way around the bas-
es to score in the loss.
With the loss, the Lions end their
incredible season with a 19-5 record.
Three Lions wore the Vegas gold and
blue for the last time. Seniors Rowdy
Westbrook, Zach Cano and Shaun To-
bey graduate with three state champi-
onships and a runner-up trophy.
Season hitting stats show only
two Lions launched homers, in-
cluding Tate and Reed Morrison,
a freshman. Three Lions hit a tri-
fecta of triples, including Flynn,
Morrison and Tate. Junior Caelan
Rodricks, freshman Lincecum and
Westbrook each logged six doubles,
while junior Shaylor Peterson takes
the team record for singles with 26.
Rodricks charted 24 RBIs to Peter-
son’s 23 to lead the team.
Flynn stole 25 bases, with Peter-
son adding 23 on the season.
Westbrook was the sole senior on
the Lions pitching staff. He logged four
wins on the season. Underclassmen
Morrison, Tate, Lincecum and Frankie
Serra will all be back to lead the Lions
in the 2015 season and the possibility
of a fifth rematch with the Blacksmiths.
