NORTH CROWLEY FOOTBALL
Smothering defense leads Panthers
STEPHEN STIPE/COURTESY PHOTO
North Crowley defender Tommy Wright tackles Weatherford quarter-
back Stephen Pitts durinq the Panthers' 33-7 Homecominq win Friday
night at Panther Stadium.
By ROBERT RICHARDSON
Special to the Crowley Star
Panther Stadium was
loud and rocking Friday
night. The 2011 Home-
coming atmosphere com-
bined with a full stadium
brought out the best in
North Crowley Panthers.
Kicking off District
4-5A play, the Panthers
used a smothering defense
and explosive first-half of-
fense to beat Weatherford,
33-7. The offense racked
up more than 200 yards
in the first half, with the
defense holding the Kan-
garoos at bay after the first
score, pulling ahead to a
26-7 lead.
The win was the largest
margin of victory for the
Panthers since the 2008
season when the Panthers
beat Burleson 50-21.
Weatherford (0-4, 0-1)
started the scoring with
the help of a Panthers
turnover on the first pos-
session, taking a quick
7-0 lead, only to see North

Crowley (1-3, 1-0) score
four times before the end
of the half.
Aaron Hartfield opened
the scoring for the Pan-
thers with a 9-yard run,
and Gavin Bryant’s point
after tied the score. Josh
Price scampered around
the right side for 47 yards
and touchdown on the
next series, moving the
Panthers ahead to stay.
Not be outdone by the
running game, Joshua
Sweet and Price hooked up
for a 64-yard pass recep-
tion, followed by Xavier
Matthew’s 7-yard touch-
down reception to move
the score to 20-7.
The Panthers’ de-
fense took control of the
game following the early
score by Weatherford and
smothered the Kangaroo
offense. The defense held
the Kangaroos to 116 yards
of total offense with seven
punts.
With the Panthers’ de-
fensive tackles filling the
gaps and playing on the
Weatherford side of the
ball, the linebackers were
able to search out oppos-
ing runners and constantly
pressure the Kangaroos’
quarterback into short
pass plays.
The Panthers next play
Fort Worth Paschal at 7
p.m. today at Farrington
Field in Fort Worth.

CROWLEY TENNIS
Eagles near 7-4A tournament berth
By DAVE SORTER
crowleystar@thestargroup. com
Crowley’s tennis team
once again prevailed in a
cliff-hanger, winning eight
of 12 singles matches to beat
Cleburne, 11-8, Sept. 20 in a
District 7-4A match at Cle-
burne.
The Eagles (5-2 overall,
3-1 in district) can clinch a
spot in the district tourna-
ment with a win in one of
their three remaining match-
es. They played at home
against Granbury Tuesday
and will be at Joshua Oct. 4
and home to Burleson Oct. 11.
Cleburne started out
strong, taking a 4-3 lead in
the doubles portion of the
meet. The only straight-set
Crowley doubles win was
in mixed doubles, in which
Garrett Sherrill and Allison
Kass took a 6-2, 6-4 win over
Cleburne’s Toby Westbrook
and Caitlin Carver. Cameron
Geckler and Jayden Whitter
in boys doubles and Amber
Flores and Heather Nix in
girls doubles also won their
matches in 10-point tiebreak-
ers. In fact, eight of the 19
matches went to a third set,
and two others featured set
tiebreakers.
The boys singles unit pro-
duced again, winning four of
six matches, marking only
the second and third individ-
ual losses Crowley has had in
district play. The Eagles boys
are now 15-3 in 7-4A singles
play. Erik Albano, at No. 2
singles, Whitter at No. 3,
Geckler at No. 4 and Sherrill
at No. 5 won their matches.
In girls singles, No. 1 Brianna
Sadler, No. 3 Flores, No. 4
Kass and No. 5 Rachel Lowe
were triumphant.
All matches begin at 4
p.m.

ley three and out that gave
Everman the ball with 38
seconds left. Small’s TD came
with four seconds left.
Crowley could manage
only two first downs in the
third quarter and threw two
interceptions, but Everman
didn’t do much better. The
Bulldogs’ first second-half
drive ended with the punter
kicking the ball straight over
his head, ending up eight
yards behind the line of
scrimmage. They did score
one touchdown on a 47-yard
pass from Birdow to Horace
Richardson with 2:16 left in
the third quarter.
Both defenses started
crumbling in the fourth quar-
ter. Zach Cowen and Devin
Walker scored for Everman,
before 7-4A rushing leader
Larry Cheeks of Crowley fi-
nally broke out. After losing
five yards in the first half,
Cheeks was revived in the
final quarter, taking a pitch
for a seven yard touchdown.
The drive also featured a
screen pass from Ryan Fly-
nn to Cheeks, and a 16-yard
completion from Flynn to
D’Myrian Robinson that
put the ball at the Everman
7-yard line.
Crowley’s Theodis John-
son recovered Sheldon Beets’
onside kick, and Cheeks went
to work again. Runs of 17 and
five yards and a screen-pass
reception for 15 yards put the
ball at the 3-yard line. Flynn
then hit Floyd Rogers with a
TD pass to narrow the mar-
gin.
‘They better learn that it’s
district now, so everyone will
bring everything they have,”
James said. “For the most
part, one side of the ball did
that, the other side didn’t.
This week, we need to put ev-
erything together.”
The Eagles play Mansfield
Summit (3-1, 1-0) at 7:30
p.m. Friday at Vernon New-
some Stadium.

fensively,” James said. “They
line up with four receivers
and run the football.”
Summit’s defense will
sport a familiar look.
“They’re a 4-3 defense
and they play the Cover 2,”
James said. “They’re simi-
lar to Everman defensively.
Their athletes all run well
and tackle well.”
One of Summit’s strengths
is the success of the program,
James said.
“They know how to win,”
he said. “Summit played
three rounds deep into the
playoffs last year. They’re a
well-coached football team.”
The Eagles will try to use
what they learned against
Everman, against which they
gained just 183 yards of to-
tal offense, to beat Summit.
Cheeks will try to get him-
self untracked early, and
Flynn and the receivers will
try to connect better on their
routes.
“This week, we need to put
everything together,” James
said. “We have to figure out a
way to start the game better.”
Crowley has only one in-
jury of note, James said. Re-
ceiver Phillip Baptiste missed
Friday’s game with a hip
abrasion and will likely miss
two more weeks.
Friday’s game marks the
first of three straight Home-
coming games for the Eagles.
Crowley’s own Homecoming
will take place Oct. 7 against
Arlington Seguin, and the fol-
lowing week, the Eagles will
provide the opposition for
Cleburne’s Homecoming.
