University in Houston is now in
a quandary over whether to ad-
mit Negro students and charge
tuition. Trustees of the school
are asking permission to rein-
terpret an indenture by which
William Marsh Rice founded the
school in 1891 for “white inhabi-
tants” of Houston and Texas and
that the school should be free
Eleven former Rice st'udbnt?
have lined up with the trustees
in one petition An opposing pe
tition by two other former stCK^
dents opposes the trustees, the
latter two contending that the
change would destroy the pur-
pose of the founder and that
the current trustees should re-
sign if they da not care to en-
force the provisions of William
Rice's wishes.
Jurors in Houston are cur-
rently hearing the case, and the
outcome should be - interesting.
Incidentally, a Rice - ex from
Hondo. Johnny Windrow is real-
ly making a name for himself
in dentistry school in Houston.
The son of Mrs L. E Kollman
Jr of Hondo, Johnny led his
class in grades for the first se-
mester of this year.
