That must mean, the way I see it, that farmers
are due twice os much money as they got in 1949.

The rew p’eS'dent elect of Mexico, Dial Ordox,
is not the handsome, dynapiic type that Lopex Mateos
has be--n, but judging from his speech at tho LBJ
Roneh last Thursday, which he made in the presence
of the President of the United States! the governors
of several states and other political dignitaries, he is
a man with o sound basic philosophy. When he mode
his talk in Spanish on the importance of improving
edu'.otion in Mexico, on helping solve problems of the
oged and sic': and needy, on keeping up good rela-
tions with our country, he sounded very sincere. He
used not a note for tho delivery of the speech, which
lasted about 15 minutes, and ot its conclusion, one of
his o des who hod been standing at his side writing at
a jot poce the entire time, read the message in English
for the benef t of many of us who "no habla esponol."

In addition to the fast action of this interpreter,
I was also interested in watching another person in his
cJu*y that day. He wns Angier Biddle Duke, Cjpief of
Protocol, who is THE man who determines who does
wha1, when and where whenever the leader of any
other nation is a guest in our country. He stayed at
the s'do of President Ordax most of the day, except
during the time a receiving line was formed v/hon he
just preceded President Johnson.
It was here he was amazing to watch, for his
cars were listening in one direction as his head and
voice ware turned and saying something entirely dif-
ferent. His aide 'ead the name tags of the people com-
ing up next, and at the exact moment tho aide was
telling him the. name. Mr. Duke was (without looking
at name tags) introducing to the President another
couple. For example, at the same instant the aide was
whispering to him, "Mr. and Mrs. Brown", the coupU
next in line, he was telling the President, "Judge and
Mrs. Jone^", tho couple standing in front of the Presi-
dent, and there was never a bobble. This takes a very
special kind of concentration,

“To be in the new building in
time for the Christmas rush
might have some disadvantages
as well as advantages,’’ said
FilMmnn, “but of course we will
be happy to be in more comfort-
able quarters whenever we do

With Christmas a little over a
month away, the Hondo Business
and Profes ional Womens Club is
turning new efforts again to their
annually sponsored Empty Stock-
ing Fund.
For the past ten year* or more
B4tPW member* have provided
for needy families in Hondo the
onlv remembrances they receive
at Christman.
Miss Mary Ruth Cameron, pri>
j act chairman, says that this
year Hondo ha* 35 families, re-
P'esentiig about 8 5 children,
whose Christmas will be bleak
and cheerless unless enough mo-
ney can be raised to make it
c herwise
Last week two checks, un*oti-
ci'ed, were received In the mail.
“Some Hondoans who are regu-
lar contributors wiil probably be
vending their checks lit too,”
said Miss Cameron, "but we
would appreciate receiving them
earty”
Miss Cameron said that to pro-
vide the essentials (or each (atn-
jlv to have a ‘reasonably Merry
Christmas’ would require an av*
e'age of *15 or $20 each Who-
ever money is received is care-
fully spem to provtde as mueh
variety as possible, Since the
distribution must be made not
later than Dec. 22. the BftPW
group urge* prompt attention to
their plea for help.
Also needed are new clothing,
shoes of all sizes, bedding, on-
red goods, staple non-perishahlo
foods, cured meats, toys, and
any o her items a family can
use.
It Ls important that all articles
be new and hot wwd "We stress
this because, while many used
articles are welcome at other
times, we bilieve that Christmas
is a soecial time and merits
new gifts for persons who sel-
dom if ever have the opportuni-
ty to experience this except per-
haps et Christmas.”
Contributions may be address-
ed B&PW Empty Stocking Fund.
